    "This book is the first to offer a comprehensive selection of Walt Whitman's Civil War poetry and prose with a full commentary on each work. One of the most distinguished critics in Whitman Studies, Ed Folsom, and one of the nation's most prominent writers and literary figures, Christopher Merrill, carry on a dialog with Whitman (and with each other), selection by selection, as they invite readers to enter into the conversation about how Whitman's writing about the Civil War develops, shifts, and manifests itself in different genres throughout the four years of the war. Folsom and Merrill go beyond Whitman's well-known war poems in his Drum-Taps and examine with equal care his Civil War prose writing in Memoranda During the War and in his personal letters. The book offers forty selections of Whitman's war writings, each followed by Folsom's detailed critical examination of the work and then by Merrill's writer's afterword, suggesting broader contexts for thinking about the selection. The Civil War initially shattered Whitman's confidence in the future of the nation he invested so much faith in, but he gradually reconciled himself to the idea that the war ultimately would strengthen the reconstructed United States and would serve as the compost out of which a great democratic future would be built. Folsom and Merrill offer a commentary that takes to heart Whitman's faith in an emerging democratic readership. The real democratic reader, Whitman said, "must himself or herself construct indeed the poem, argument, history, metaphysical essay-the text furnishing the hints, the clue, the start or frame-work," because what is needed for democracy to flourish is "a nation of supple and athletic minds." This book-like our previous one on Whitman's "Song of Myself"-sets out to model this active kind of reading and to encourage both seasoned and new readers of Whitman's war writings to enter into the challenging and exhilarating mode of talking back to Whitman, of engaging him, arguing with him, learning from him, and articulating ways that his responses to America's defining traumatic event continue to speak in surprising new ways to present-day America and to the world beyond America"--

Cartographies of loss: postwar neoliberalism, international tourism, and the vital art of Romesh Gunesekera and Thamotharampillai Shanaathanan. "Assembling Ethnicities in Neoliberal Times: Ethnographic Fictions and Sri Lanka's War" argues that Sri Lanka's bloody thirty year-long war, fought between the state and the separatist Tamil Tigers from 1983 to 2009, should be understood as structured and animated by the forces of global capitalism. Using Aihwa Ong's theorization of neoliberalism as a mobile technology and assemblage, this book explores how contemporary globalization, as an economic system and a governing rationality for the management of populations, has exacerbated forces of nationalism and racism. One of the book's key interventions is to argue that the form of Ethnographic Fictions is vital for understanding neoliberal assemblages. The fictions that belong to this form, "Assembling Ethnicities" suggests, have internalized certain colonial Orientalist impulses, but also critically engage with categories of objective gazing, empiricism, and temporal distancing. Arguing that ethnographic fictions is a more accurate term than realism for understanding the relationship between form, capitalism, and the production of races, Assembling Ethnicities begins by exploring the emergence of the form during colonialism by close-reading the travel writings of Robert Knox (1681) and Leonard Woolf (1913).     The fall of Nero and the civil wars of 69 CE ushered in an era scarred by the recent conflicts; Flavian literature also inherited a rich tradition of narrating nefas from its predecessors who had confronted and commemorated the traumas of Pharsalus and Actium. Despite the present surge of scholarly interest in both Flavian literary studies and Roman civil war literature, however, the Flavian contribution to Rome's literature of bellum ciuile remains understudied. This volume shines a spotlight on these neglected voices. In the wake of 69 CE, writing civil war became an inescapable project for Flavian Rome: from Statius's fraternas acies and Silius's suicidal Saguntines to the internecine narratives detailed in Josephus's Bellum Iudaicum and woven into Frontinus's exempla, Flavian authors' preoccupation with civil war transcends genre and subject matter. This book provides an important new chapter in the study of Roman civil war literature by investigating the multi-faceted Flavian response to this persistent and prominent theme

    "Assembling Ethnicities in Neoliberal Times: Ethnographic Fictions and Sri Lanka's War" argues that Sri Lanka's bloody thirty year-long war, fought between the state and the separatist Tamil Tigers from 1983 to 2009, should be understood as structured and animated by the forces of global capitalism. Using Aihwa Ong's theorization of neoliberalism as a mobile technology and assemblage, this book explores how contemporary globalization, as an economic system and a governing rationality for the management of populations, has exacerbated forces of nationalism and racism. One of the book's key interventions is to argue that the form of Ethnographic Fictions is vital for understanding neoliberal assemblages. The fictions that belong to this form, "Assembling Ethnicities" suggests, have internalized certain colonial Orientalist impulses, but also critically engage with categories of objective gazing, empiricism, and temporal distancing. As the book demonstrates, such fictions take seriously the task of bearing witness, and documenting the complex productions of ethnic identities, and the devastations wrought by warfare. One of the most distinguished critics in Whitman Studies, Ed Folsom, and one of the nation's most prominent writers and literary figures, Christopher Merrill, carry on a dialog with Whitman (and with each other), selection by selection, as they invite readers to enter into the conversation about how Whitman's writing about the Civil War develops, shifts, and manifests itself in different genres throughout the four years of the war. Folsom and Merrill go beyond Whitman's well-known war poems in his Drum-Taps and examine with equal care his Civil War prose writing in Memoranda During the War and in his personal letters. The book offers forty selections of Whitman's war writings, each followed by Folsom's detailed critical examination of the work and then by Merrill's writer's afterword, suggesting broader contexts for thinking about the selection. The Civil War initially shattered Whitman's confidence in the future of the nation he invested so much faith in, but he gradually reconciled himself to the idea that the war ultimately would strengthen the reconstructed United States and would serve as the compost out of which a great democratic future would be built. Folsom and Merrill offer a commentary that takes to heart Whitman's faith in an emerging democratic readership. The real democratic reader, Whitman said, "must himself or herself construct indeed the poem, argument, history, metaphysical essay-the text furnishing the hints, the clue, the start or frame-work," because what is needed for democracy to flourish is "a nation of supple and athletic minds."     "Written in the aftermath of Nero's downfall, the Year of the Four Emperors and the rise of Vespasian, Valerius Flaccus' Argonautica departs significantly from earlier treatments of the Argonautic myth. This monograph explores how the epic's fusion of foreign conquest with civil war, its depiction of rulers and tyrants, and its disconcerting portrayal of the gods may have resonated with its contemporary audience. The proposed readings suggest that the poem reflects approval of Vespasian's rule, yet ambiguously leaves open the question of whether the future of Flavian Rome will hold everlasting peace or another civil war."-- Einleitung -- Krieg und Bürgerkrieg.     La guerra civile è un fenomeno specifico, ma anche esemplare di ogni altra forma di scontro bellico. E il rapporto fra letteratura e manifestazioni della violenza è un altro luogo tipico della scrittura novecentesca. Il dato sorprendente che emerge da questo libro di Enrico Lodi è la confutazione della tesi che violenza e cultura siano nemiche irriducibili. Dal modello "eroico" dell'Iliade alla scoperta di un'impossibile "esperienza guerriera" nella modernità schiacciata dal potere devastante della tecnologia che ha dissolto ogni ordine simbolico della guerra nel Novecento, l'autore traccia un panorama del dibattito letterario suscitato dal caso particolare della guerra civile spagnola e ne evidenzia il carattere emblematico. Tra i filo-franchisti e i nazionalisti emergono poche figure di rilievo che, seguendo la propaganda ufficiale, elaborano una vera e propria "pornografia della violenza" che indulge alle seduzioni della morte e alla crudeltà. Sul fronte opposto, anche autori come Rafael Alberti e Pablo Neruda sembrano subire il fascino della violenza tipico della scrittura politicizzata. Ma esiste anche una zona di confine con autori che non cedono alla seduzione della morte: Ramon Sender, Chaves Nogales, Arturo Barea, Maria Zambrano, Miguel de Unamuno, che nella violenza vedono prevalere la "banalità del male". L'appendice finale propone vari testi inediti di questi autori sulla guerra civile.
