    This volume investigates the biographical events, travels, knowledge, visual culture, and methodological training of Giovan Battista Cavalcaselle, one of the greatest art connoisseurs of the 19th century. It spans from 1834 to 1857, when Cavalcaselle returned from England after his exile following the Risorgimento uprisings of 1848-49, a period about which very little was known until now. It sketches an unprecedented portrait of Cavalcaselle, that reflects the fervor of an era as tumultuous as it was rich in ideals
