    Bei dieser Monographie handelt es sich um eine umfassende Darstellung von imaginären Phänomenen wie Träumen, Visionen und Ekstasen innerhalb der frühbyzantinischen monastischen Literatur. Auf einer breiten Quellenbasis wird das Phänomen nach seiner literarischen Verarbeitung und den sich darin widerspiegelnden kulturgeschichtlichen Hintergründen untersucht. In vier Kapiteln (1. "Aspekte von imaginären Erfahrungen in der monastischen Literatur"; 2. "Bewusstseinszustände und imaginäre Erfahrungen"; 3. "Terminologische und formale Aspekte der imaginären Erfahrungen"; 4. "Vom heidnischen Mantiker zum christlichen Charismatiker") wird die weitreichende Bedeutung imaginärer Erfahrungen innerhalb und außerhalb des monastischen Umfelds sowie der Umgang mit der Thematik vonseiten der sich in der behandelten Zeit etablierenden christlichen Kirche aufgezeigt. Dabei werden verschiedene überkommene Meinungen in der Wissenschaft modifiziert (z.B. Definitionen von Begriffen wie "Vision", "Erscheinung" oder "Traum") und neue Gesichtspunkte erschlossen (z. B. Die Bedeutung der imaginären Erfahrung für die Entwicklung von der ortsgebundenen [inkubatorischen] hin zur ortsungebundenen Traumheilung)

    This book explores how the Virgin Mary's life is told in hymns, sermons, icons, art, and other media in the Byzantine Empire before AD 1204. A group of international specialists examines material and textual evidence from both Byzantine and Muslim-ruled territories that was intended for a variety of settings and audiences and seeks to explain why Byzantine artisans and writers chose to tell stories about Mary, the Mother of God, in such different ways. Sometimes the variation reflected the theological or narrative purposes of story-tellers; sometimes it expressed their personal spiritual preoccupations. Above all, the variety of aspects that this holy figure assumed in Byzantium reveals her paradoxical theological position as meeting-place and mediator between the divine and created realms. Narrative, whether 'historical', theological, or purely literary, thus played a fundamental role in the development of the Marian cult from Late Antiquity onward

    Iconoclasm was the name given to the stance of that portion of Eastern Christianity that rejected worshipping God through images (eikones) representing Christ, the Virgin or the saints and was the official doctrine of the Byzantine Empire for most of the period between 726 and 843. It was a period marked by violent passions on either side. This is the first comprehensive account of the extant contemporary texts relating to this phenomenon and their impact on society, politics and identity. By examining the literary circles emerging both during the time of persecution and immediately after the restoration of icons in 843, the volume casts new light on the striking (re)construction of Byzantine society, whose iconophile identity was biasedly redefined by the political parties led by Theodoros Stoudites, Gregorios Dekapolites and Empress Theodora or the patriarchs Methodios, Ignatios and Photios. It thereby offers an innovative paradigm for approaching Byzantine literature

    Rhetoric and Rhythm in Byzantium takes a fresh look at rhetorical rhythm and its theory and practice, highlighting the close affinity between rhythm and argument. Based on material from Byzantine and Old Church Slavonic homilies and from Byzantine rhetorical commentaries, the book redefines and expands our understanding of both Byzantine and Old Church Slavonic prose rhythm. It positions rhetorical rhythm at the intersection of prose and poetry and explores its role in argumentation and persuasion, suggesting that rhetorical rhythm can carry across linguistic boundaries, and in general aims to demonstrate the stylistic and argumentative importance of rhythm in rhetorical practice. Along the way, it challenges the entrenched separation between content and style and emphasizes the role of rhythm as a tool of invention and a means of creating shared emotional experience

    Byzantine literature is often regarded as little more than an agglomeration of stereotyped forms and generic conventions which allows no scope for individual thought or expression. Accordingly, histories of Byzantine literature tend to focus on the history of genres. The essays in this book challenge the traditional view. They attempt to show the coherence and individuality not of the genre but of author. By careful analysis of all the works of a given author, regardless of genre, these studies aim to reach behind the facade of convention, to discover not only biographical facts but also the writer's own likes and dislikes, his social views, his political sympathies and antipathies, his ethical and aesthetic standards. Most of the authors under consideration lived in the twelfth century. Several of them experienced or wrote about the same set of events; often they were acquainted with one another, or else had mutual friends. Thus each essay is both complete in itself and complementary to the others in the book; the individuality of each writer is most fully revealed in the comparison with his contemporaries and conversely the separate portraits may be combined to form a broader picture of Byzantine literary society of the time
