    Der Trend zu Do-It-Yourself (DIY) und offenem Wissensaustausch in Online-Communities fordert etablierte Institutionen heraus. Auch in avancierten Bereichen der Forschung und Entwicklung gelingt es alternativen Projektgemeinschaften inzwischen, Technologien und Wissen kostengünstiger und effizienter weiterzuentwickeln als die Entwicklungsabteilungen traditioneller Unternehmen. Diese Studie stellt Mitglieder von DIY bzw. Open Biology Communities als potenzielle Mitarbeitende etablierter Unternehmen in den Mittelpunkt und zeigt, wie mit Hilfe einer guten Mediation eine erfolgreiche Kooperation zwischen diesen beiden ungleichen Gruppen möglich ist.

    Methoden um die genetische Information von Organismen gezielt zu verändern sind im Begriff die Biologie und Medizin zu revolutionieren. Die neuste dieser Methoden, die sogenannte CRISPR-Technologie, vereint hohe Effizienz und Genauigkeit mit großer Einfachheit in der Anwendung. Diese Studie leg dar, wie aus dem bakteriellen CRISPR-basierenden Immunsystem die am häufigsten verwendete Methode zur Veränderung von menschlichen, tierischen, pflanzlichen oder bakteriellen Genomen entwickelt wurde, welche Vorteile sie gegenüber anderen Methoden hat und wie natürliche Systeme gezielt weiterentwickelt und mit neuen Funktionen ausgestattet wurden. Es wird erläutert, welche Anwendungen diese Methoden in der biomedizinischen Grundlageforschung und bei der Entwicklung neuer Therapien finden. Im Fokus der Studie steht die Beschreibung des derzeitigen Stands der Forschung und klinischen Entwicklung zur Veränderung von Genen in isolierten Patientenzellen oder direkt im menschlichen Körper zu therapeutischen Zwecken. Vor diesem Hintergrund werden darüber hinaus bestehende Probleme und Möglichkeiten für zukünftige Verbesserungen der Technologie diskutiert.

    When permitted by law, employers sometimes state the preferred age and sex of their employees in job ads. We study this practice using data from one Mexican and three Chinese job boards, showing that it is widely used to request both genders and is especially prevalent in jobs with low skill requirements. For example, on the job board serving less-skilled production and service workers in China, 72 percent of ads specified a preferred gender, and 77 percent listed both a minimum and maximum age. We also document a new stylized fact we call the age twist in gender profiling: firms' explicit gender requests shift dramatically away from women and towards men when firms are seeking older (as opposed to younger) workers. While some of this twist can be attributed to employers' age-dependent requests for (female) beauty and (male) leadership, the timing of the shift suggests that young women's movement into childbearing also plays a role

    This chapter reviews the data and literature on gender, race and ethnicity differences in research funding in the United States and Europe. The gender gap in research funding has closed at the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health in the United States and substantially narrowed in Europe. Underrepresented minorities are less likely to receive research funding that whites in the United States. We found that much of the literature was a series of informative independent studies where many of the potential explanations depended upon the context. Our examination of peer review also found contradictory evidence of its efficacy. The variety of countries, funders, and approaches to peer review make it difficult to make definitive conclusions in the face of contradictory evidence on the gender funding gap. We conclude that access to high-quality administrative data would allow for improved methodological approaches to understanding these differences in research funding

    This paper studies how recent investigations of foreign influence in research have affected the productivity of U.S. scientists in the field of life sciences. Using data from PubMed and Dimensions during 2010-2020, we compare scientists who collaborated with scientists in China during 2010-2014 with those who collaborated with scientists in other countries outside the U.S. By studying the publication records for over 102,000 scientists during 2015-2020, we find that the investigations coincide with a decline in the productivity of scientists with previous collaborations with scientists in China, especially when the quality of publications is considered. he decline is particularly salient for the fields with more pre-investigation NIH funding and U.S.-China collaborations. We also provide suggestive evidence that our findings matter for the aggregate productivity by fields for both the U.S. and China
