The British poet Charlotte Mew - whose 150th anniversary falls in 2019 - was regarded as one of the best poets of her age by fellow writers. She has since been neglected, but her star is beginning to rise again. This is the first comprehensive biography, from cradle to grave, and it is written by Faber poet Julia Copus, who recently unveiled a blue plaque on Mew’s childhood house in Doughty Street. Mew was a curious mix of New Woman and stalwart Victorian.     Mirrored Loss tells the story of Amat al-Latif al Wazir, only daughter of 'Abdullah al-Wazir, the leader of Yemen's constitutional movement of the mid-twentieth century for democratisation of the autocratic imamate. Her relationship with her adored father, who was accused of treason, takes centre stage in this biographical narrative. Amat enjoyed a privileged childhood in a high-ranking family at the heart of Yemeni politics; yet the failed revolt of 1948 was the family's downfall, leaving her and other close relatives exposed to social indignities and privation. She then spent many years in exile, where she suffered a personal calamity that compounded the earlier catastrophe. Gunning draws on the writing of missionaries, abolitionists, entrepreneurs, and explorers whose work challenges the assumptions that travel writing is primarily associated with leisure or scientific research. For instance, Yoruba ex-slave turned Anglican bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther played a role in the Christianization of colonial Nigeria.     The story of Ernest Hemingway and Pauline Pfeiffer during six summers from 1928 through 1939--each showing Hemingway at a different place in his writing as well as a different stage of their marriage. In March 1928, after the phenomenal success of The Sun Also Rises, Ernest Hemingway returned to the United States with his second wife, Pauline Pfeiffer--the stylish Vogue editor and scorned "other woman" who would give up everything to be with him and, in the end, lose it all. The couple fled Paris in the wake of the huge gossip storm about the American author's affair and abandonment of his wife and son. Escaping to Wyoming's Big Horn Mountains to write while Pauline recovered from the birth of their first child, he finished A Farewell to Arms and fell in love with the land around him. Pauline soon joined him in Yellowstone and Jackson Hole. In Cockeyed Happy Darla Worden tells the little-known story of Hemingway and Pauline during six summers from 1928 to 1939--from smitten newlywed to bored, restless husband and ultimately to philanderer as he falls in love with another woman once again. --

    "Against the historical background of Chinese translation in the West and the emergence of several prominent European translators of China, this book examines the role of a translator in terms of cross-cultural communication, the image of the foreign culture in the minds of the target audience, and the influence of their translations on the target culture. With the focus on the career and output of the Dutch translator Henri Borel (1869-1933), this study investigates different aspects of the role of translator. The investigation is carried out by analysing texts and probing the achievements and contributions of the translator, underpinned by documents from the National Archives and the Literature Museum in the Hague, the Netherlands. Based on the findings derived from this study, advice is offered to those now involved in the promotion and translation of Chinese culture and literature. It will make an important contribution to the burgeoning history of Chinese translation. This book will be of interest to anyone with an interest or background in the translation history of China, the history of sinology in the West and the role of translators"

Rosa und Curt Meyer-Clason --Übersetzung, Veredas: Lebensformen des übersetzten literarischen Werkes João Guimarães Rosa (1908-1967) ist der wichtigste Romancier Brasiliens aus der Zeit seiner literarischen Schaffensperiode in der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Von 1938-1942 wirkte er als Vizekonsul Brasiliens in Hamburg und war somit der einzige lateinamerikanische Intellektuelle seines Rangs, der während der Nazi-Diktatur derart lange in Deutschland lebte. Diese Erfahrung, die einem seit der Kindheit idealisierten Bezug zur deutschen Sprache viel differenziertere Färbungen verlieh, verstärkte trotz der ernüchternden Konfrontation mit dem Land unter dem Naziregime die geistigen Bande, die ihn und das kulturelle Erbe vom deutschsprachigen Europa zusammenhielten. Zu der Zeit verbrachte der künftige deutsche Übersetzer von Rosa, Curt Meyer-Clason (1910-2012) seine Jugendjahre in Brasilien als Kaufmann im Baumwollimport und geriet somit in Kontakt mit Agenten des NS-Regimes. Auf Befehl brasilianischer Behörden wurde er deshalb von 1942-1946 interniert. In der Haftzeit begann seine Beziehung zur Literatur, der er sich nach der Rückkehr nach Europa bis zu seinem Lebensende hauptberuflich widmete. In relativ kurzer Zeit machte sich Meyer-Clason einen Namen als Übersetzer iberoamerikanischer Literatur, insbesondere des mittlerweile international anerkannten Guimarães Rosa. Der vorliegende Band mit Beiträgen von prominenten deutschen, brasilianischen und portugiesischen Literaturwissenschaftler*innen setzt sich mit der intellektuellen Zusammenarbeit zwischen dem Schriftsteller und dem Übersetzer, einem besonderen Fall im transarealen Raum der deutsch-brasilianischen Kulturbeziehungen This edited volume, which features essays from prominent German, Brazilian, and Portuguese scholars, deals with the personal relations and intensive intellectual collaboration between Joao Guimaraes Rosa (1908-1967) and his German translator Curt Meyer-Clason (1910-2012), a special case of German-Brazilian cultural exchange

    Dieser Band präsentiert die 14 Autorinnen, die bislang mit dem Nobelpreis für Literatur ausgezeichnet wurden. Dass Produktion wie Rezeption von Kunst und Literatur keine geschlechtsneutralen Tätigkeiten sind, ist keine neue Einsicht der Gender Studies. Doch der Umstand, dass diesen 14 ausgezeichneten Frauen 100 männliche Nobelpreisträger gegenüberstehen, macht deutlich, dass die Eroberung der Autorposition durch Frauen weiterhin ein schwieriger und vielschichtiger Prozess ist. So fokussiert der Band nicht nur literarische Traditionen von Frauen, sondern auch Fragen nach weiblichem Schreiben und einer erweiterten Kanonbildung. Im Mittelpunkt der Beiträge stehen exemplarische Lektüren des Werks und das intellektuelle Profil der jeweiligen Autorin. Dabei wird in Anschluss an die von Virginia Woolf in ihrem Essay „A Room of One's Own" schon 1929 beschriebenen Herausforderungen für das literarische Schreiben von Frauen auch die Frage nach Bedingungen und Widersprüchen künstlerischer Kreativität gestellt.
