    In Embodying Relation Allison Moore examines the tensions between the local and the global in the art photography movement in Bamako, Mali, which blossomed in the 1990s after Malian photographers Seydou Keïta and Malick Sidibé became internationally famous and the Bamako Photography Biennale was founded. Moore traces the trajectory of Malian photography from the 1880s-when photography first arrived as an apparatus of French colonialism-to the first African studio practitioners of the 1930s and the establishment in 1994 of the Bamako Biennale, Africa's most important continent-wide photographic exhibition. In her detailed discussion of Bamakois artistic aesthetics and institutions, Moore examines the post-fame careers of Keïta and Sidibé, the Biennale's structure, the rise of women photographers, cultural preservation through photography, and how Mali's shift to democracy in the early 1990s enabled Bamako's art scene to flourish. Moore shows how Malian photographers' focus on cultural exchange, affective connections with different publics, and merging of traditional cultural precepts with modern notions of art embody Caribbean philosopher and poet Édouard Glissant's notion of "relation" in ways that spark new artistic forms, practices, and communities

Moore engages with Glissant's concept of relation in order to emphasize the ways in which Malian art photography is concerned primarily with making affective connections with viewers, rather than with contesting colonial histories, as has been the case elsewhere. Moore documents an art movement based in Bamako that has used photography as an expressive project, inviting expansive interpretations from viewers (rather than a documentary medium, as was more common during the era of studio photography). The robust photographic archive that accompanies her analysis demonstrates this transition from studio portraits to a portraiture aesthetic that engages the viewer in the simultaneous immediacy and opacity that Moore uses to introduce the reader to a Malian aesthetic. While Bamako has long been recognized as the center of African art photography, the city's capacity to support the growth of the movement is due in large part to the coordination of French patronage, most clearly exemplified by the funding of the Bamako Biennale since 1994. Through combined analysis of the developing aesthetics and institutionalization of the movement, Moore details how Malian photographers established both the market and the taste for photography with a vintage aesthetic in the 1990s. By using Glissant's concept of relation to understand the connections between Bamakois photographers and their global patrons, Moore is able to account for both the photographers' unique aesthetics as well as for the postcolonial acts of mediation they perform. The book's six chapters trace provide a detailed history of Bamakois aesthetics and institutions.

Roughly tracing a central horizontal strip from the western to the eastern edges of the continent, the events and cities covered are the Folkestone Triennial, UK, Münster Sculpture Projects, Germany, the Venice Biennale, Italy, Belgrade's Mikser Festival, Serbia and the Istanbul Biennial, Turkey. Whybrow establishes how public artworks operate in these contexts as part of a complex prescribed by the format of the biennial event. This means drawing out the extent to which biennial events seek to engage with the complexity of the city in question, in a manner that takes into account local socio-cultural ecologies, while also positioning the event itself within a globalist art world perspective. The book also considers how sited installations - which are very varied in form, as a reflection of a new, eclectic urban aesthetic - tell a particular story of a city, while the regional diversity of these selected cities and events in turn tells a composite story of European difference at a moment of high tension, centring on matters of migration, political populism and uncertainty around the future form of the European Union"--
