    The book of Revelation is a disorienting work, full of beasts, heavenly journeys, holy war, the End of the Age, and the New Jerusalem. It is difficult to follow the thread that ties the visions together and to makes sense of the work's message. This book argues that one way to understand the strange history of Revelation and its challenging texts is to go back to its manuscripts. The texts of the Greek manuscripts of Revelation are the foundation for the words that we encounter when we read Revelation in a modern Bible. But the manuscripts also tell us what other ancient, medieval, and early modern people thought about the work they copied and read. The paratexts of Revelation-the many features of the manuscripts that help readers to navigate and interpret the text-are one important point of evidence

    In this new interpretation of the Book of Revelation, Jacques M. Chevalier examines the relationship between astromythology and Western interpretation. While scholars have noted the influence of ancient astromythology in Revelation before, Chevalier shows how John's heavenly imagery is the key to a polemical dialogue between modes of storytelling in Western history: astrology and eschatology, and naturalism and logocentrism. The book also explains how the 'genealogical' concerns of modern academia about the origins of natural and cultural history have supplanted the future-oriented visions of sidereal divination and Christian prophecy.The first three chapters and epilogue situate Chevalier's biblical analysis in the context of broader interpretations of astrology and the apocalypse developed by Jung, D.H. Lawrence, LTvi-Strauss, Derrida, Foucault, Cassirer, Adorno, Frye, Barthes, and Morin. They also provide the reader with a solid background in the history of astrological belief systems and exegetic readings of Revelation extending from antiquity to the late twentieth century. The remaining chapters are devoted to two questions. First, how does the imagery in Revelation relate to expressions of astromythology? Second, how do twentieth-century readings of Revelation reflect a 'genealogical' perspective on notions of signs, textuality, and destiny?A Postmodern Revelation is itself an 'apocalypse,' a revelation to scholars interested in sign theory, eschatology, and the history of astrology. The book does far more than interpret the specific biblical text of John's Revelation: it plays with polemics and parallels in the history of Western thought, tracing the history of signs and their meaning from antiquity to a postmodern era that heralds the end of all myths of the End

Na jedné straně líčení apokalyptických pohrom a zkázy světa asociovalo zkázu v přeneseném slova smyslu a s apokalypsou byly spojovány společenské krize, otřesy a válečné hrůzy. Na straně druhé text vrcholí silným tématem naděje. Apokalyptické vize tak zahrnovaly i obrazy nového světa, obnovy společnosti a útěchy pro jednotlivce. Kniha představuje širokou škálu inspirací knihou Zjevení ve výtvarném umění od středověku až do současnosti. Zaměřuje se především na díla vzniklá v českých zemích, avšak pozornost věnuje i zahraničním pracím, které byly na tomto území přítomné a měly určitý ohlas. Kromě klasických cyklů ilustrované Apokalypsy (Karlštejnská Apokalypsa, Albrecht Dürer) či kontrastních motivů Posledního soudu a vizí nového světa, zpřítomňuje podoby obou pólů tématu v moderním a současném umění (Jan Koblasa, Václav Boštík, Pavel Nešleha, Josef Bolf ad.). Úzce výběrově jsou prezentovány i ohlasy Apokalypsy v hudbě a literatuře, a to prostřednictvím okruhu českého undergroundu v době tzv. normalizace, v němž hrála apokalyptická symbolika významnou roli. Kniha je koncipovaná jako doprovodná publikace ke stejnojmenné výstavě, pořádané ÚDU v Západočeské galerii v Plzni (říjen 2023 – březen 2024)
