    Traffic is culture. It determines what is where and on which routes, who meets and who doesn't it forms the basis of the networks between people and things. With the automation of traffic, the establishment of driver assistance systems and the development of self-driving cars, it is not only the relationships of human and non-human traffic participants that are being called into question. The ethical and legal foundations of road traffic as well as the basic conditions of interaction must also be re-negotiated. The contributors to this volume analyse the transformations of mobility, the traffic revolution and the highly charged object of the car from the perspectives of media and cultural studies. Verkehr ist Kultur. Er bestimmt darüber, was sich wo und auf welchen Wegen befindet, wer aufeinandertrifft und wer nicht - er bildet die Grundlage der Netzwerke, die Menschen und Dinge miteinander eingehen. Mit der Automatisierung des Verkehrs, der Etablierung von Fahrassistenzsystemen und der Entwicklung selbstfahrender Autos stehen nicht nur die Verhältnisse menschlicher und nicht-menschlicher Verkehrsteilnehmenden in Frage. Auch die ethischen und juristischen Grundlagen des Straßenverkehrs sowie die basalen Bedingungen des Umgangs miteinander müssen neu verhandelt werden. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes analysieren aus medien- und kulturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive die Transformationen der Mobilität, die Verkehrswende und das vielfach aufgeladene Objekt Auto.

    Spätestens seit dem Jahr-2000-Problem wird diskutiert, ob Automatentechnik eine Superstruktur der Gesellschaft (H. Böhme) darstellt. Peter Fey erläutert anhand dieses historischen Beispiels jene epochalen Implikationen, die sich aus der programmierten Befähigung der Automaten zur Kommunikation ergeben. In kulturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive schlägt er einen Bogen von den Überlegungen Jan Assmanns zur Verschriftung des Rechts im antiken Griechenland zu den Handlungsanweisungen für Automaten in der Jetztzeit. Wird die Dynamisierung der Schrift eine historische Zäsur herbeiführen wie die Ausformulierung gesetzlicher Anweisungen vor 2500 Jahren? Ein interessantes Kapitel der Mediengeschichte ebenso wie ein Ausblick auf zukünftige gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen durch die Kybernetik.
