    A boldly innovative study of nonverbal communication in the poetry and prose of Hellenic antiquityWhen a Gesture Was Expected encourages a deeper appreciation of ancient Greek poetry and prose by showing where a nod of the head or a wave of the hand can complete meaning in epic poetry and in tragedy, comedy, oratory, and in works of history and philosophy. All these works anticipated performing readers, and, as a result, they included prompts, places where a gesture could complete a sentence or amplify or comment on the written words. In this radical and highly accessible book, Alan Boegehold urges all readers to supplement the traditional avenues of classical philology with an awareness of the uses of nonverbal communication in Hellenic antiquity. This additional resource helps to explain some persistently confusing syntaxes and to make translations more accurate. It also imparts a living breath to these immortal texts.Where part of a work appears to be missing, or the syntax is irregular, or the words seem contradictory or perverse—without evidence of copyists' errors or physical damage—an ancient author may have been assuming that a performing reader would make the necessary clarifying gesture. Boegehold offers analyses of many such instances in selected passages ranging from Homer to Aeschylus to Plato. He also presents a review of sources of information about such gestures in antiquity as well as thirty illustrations, some documenting millennia-long continuities in nonverbal communication

    An ambitious look at the African novel and its connections to African philosophy in the twentieth and twenty-first centuriesThe African Novel of Ideas focuses on the role of the philosophical novel and the place of philosophy more broadly in the intellectual life of the African continent, from the early twentieth century to today. Examining works from the Gold Coast, South Africa, Uganda, and Zimbabwe, and tracing how such writers as J. E. Casely Hayford, Imraan Coovadia, Tendai Huchu, Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi, and Stanlake Samkange reconcile deep contemplation with their social situations, Jeanne-Marie Jackson offers a new way of reading and understanding African literature.Jackson begins with Fante anticolonial worldliness in prenationalist Ghana, moves through efforts to systematize Shona philosophy in 1970s Zimbabwe, looks at the Ugandan novel Kintu as a treatise on pluralistic rationality, and arrives at the treatment of “philosophical suicide” by current southern African writers.     'What is Comics Journalism,' and 'Why is the author not dead at all?' Because literature and journalism deal differently with "authorship" and "author," this work renegotiates these concepts. It analyzes the author's importance in comics journalism, especially concerning the verification and authentication of the production process. This study gives a broad and extensive overview of the various forms of contemporary comics journalism, and argues that authorship in comics journalism can only be adequately understood by considering the author both on the textual and extratextual level. By combining comics analyses with cultural, sociological, and literary studies approaches, this study introduces the 'comics journalistic pact,' which is an invisible agreement between author and reader, addressing issues of narration ('voice'), testimony ('face'), and journalistic engagement ('hands'). It categorizes comics journalism as a borderline genre between literature, culture, art, and journalism due to its interdisciplinary nature.

Her earlier writings have routinely been dismissed as mere juvenilia, or stepping stones to mature proficiency and greatness. Austen’s first biographer described them as “childish effusions.” Was he right to do so? Can the novels be definitively separated from the unpublished works? In Jane Austen, Early and Late, Freya Johnston argues that they cannot.Examining the three manuscript volumes in which Austen collected her earliest writings, Johnston finds that Austen’s regard and affection for them are revealed by her continuing to revisit and revise them throughout her adult life. The teenage works share the milieu and the humour of the novels, while revealing more clearly the sources and influences upon which Austen drew. Johnston upends the conventional narrative according to which Austen discarded the satire and fantasy of her first writings in favour of the irony and realism of the novels.     ‘What is Comics Journalism,’ and ‘Why is the author not dead at all?’ Because literature and journalism deal differently with “authorship” and “author,” this work renegotiates these concepts. It analyzes the author’s importance in comics journalism, especially concerning the verification and authentication of the production process. This study gives a broad and extensive overview of the various forms of contemporary comics journalism, and argues that authorship in comics journalism can only be adequately understood by considering the author both on the textual and extratextual level. By combining comics analyses with cultural, sociological, and literary studies approaches, this study introduces the ‘comics journalistic pact,’ which is an invisible agreement between author and reader, addressing issues of narration (‘voice’), testimony (‘face’), and journalistic engagement (‘hands’). It categorizes comics journalism as a borderline genre between literature, culture, art, and journalism due to its interdisciplinary nature.

Drawing lessons from Victorian sociality, Schaffer proposes a theory of communal care and a mode of critical reading centered on an ethics of care.In the Victorian era, medical science offered little hope for cure of illness or disability, and chronic invalidism and lengthy convalescences were common. Small communities might gather around afflicted individuals to minister to their needs and palliate their suffering. Communities of Care examines these groups in the novels of Jane Austen, Charlotte Brontë, Charles Dickens, George Eliot, Henry James, and Charlotte Yonge, and studies the relationships that they exemplify. How do carers become part of the community? How do they negotiate status? How do caring emotions develop? And what does it mean to think of care as an activity rather than a feeling? Contrasting the Victorian emphasis on community and social structure with modern individualism and interiority, Schaffer’s sympathetic readings draw us closer to the worldview from which these novels emerged. Schaffer also considers the ways in which these models of carework could inform and improve practice in criticism, in teaching, and in our daily lives.Through the lens of care, Schaffer discovers a vital form of communal relationship in the Victorian novel. Communities of Care also demonstrates that literary criticism done well is the best care that scholars can give to texts

Besides authors of literature in the broadest sense, representatives of the humanities can be found and other individuals from public life who, through their work, were influential beyond their specialist field. The biographical part includes information on the authors and documents political and Zionist involvement, circles of friends, and attitude towards Judaism, with autobiographical quotations wherever possible. Each biography is followed by a detailed bibliography of both primary and secondary literature in which the works are critically analysed and annotated, as far as possible or relevant. Quotations by the author, content of writings and/or excerpts from reviews are provided to further facilitate research.

    Das Lexikon deutsch-jüdischer Autoren erschließt den jüdischen Beitrag zur deutschsprachigen Kulturgeschichte in ca. 1.300 biographisch-bibliographischen Artikeln. Der biographische Teil der Artikel enthält Personenangaben, Auskünfte zum politischen und zionistischen Engagement, zum Freundeskreis sowie zur Stellung zum Judentum. Im bibliographischen Teil werden die Werke soweit möglich in Autopsie bibliographiert und annotiert. Band 17 verzeichnet z. B. Moses Mendelssohn, Richard M. Meyer, Alfred Mombert, Lina Morgenstern, Paul Nathan, Max Nordau, José Orabuena, Bertha Pappenheim, Hugo Wolfgang Philipp. The Lexikon deutsch-jüdischer Autoren covers the Jewish contribution to German-speaking cultural history in some 1,300 biographical-bibliographic articles. Besides authors of literature in the broadest sense, representatives of the humanities can be found and other individuals from public life who, through their work, were influential beyond their specialist field. The biographical part includes information on the authors and documents political and Zionist involvement, circles of friends, and attitude towards Judaism, with autobiographical quotations wherever possible. Each biography is followed by a detailed bibliography of both primary and secondary literature in which the works are critically analysed and annotated, as far as possible or relevant. Quotations by the author, content of writings and/or excerpts from reviews are provided to further facilitate research. Kai Bremer explores the development of drama since Brecht based on Peter Szondi's »Theory of Modern Drama« Wie verhält sich das Drama zu seiner potenziellen Inszenierung - und ist der Autor in ihm wirklich abwesend? Mit diesen Ausgangsfragen greift Kai Bremer Peter Szondis »Theorie des modernen Dramas« auf, die 1956 - im Todesjahr Brechts - erschienen ist. Historisch zeichnet die Studie die Dramatik seit Brecht nach, fokussiert die immer radikalere Episierung seit den 1970er Jahren und beleuchtet die Hinwendung zu älteren dramatischen Formen in den 1990er Jahren. Mit der Frage nach dem Stand des Tragischen und der Tragödie in der Gegenwart wird schließlich der Bogen zurück zu Peter Szondi geschlagen

    How do literary museums and memorials remind the public of writers? A typology of the remembrance work of literary museums Neben Schriftstellerarchiven sind es besonders literarische Museen und Gedenkstätten, die an Autor_innen und ihre Literatur erinnern. Doch wie genau erfüllen sie diese Aufgabe und was unterscheidet die Museen von den Gedenkstätten?Vor dem Hintergrund erinnerungstheoretischer Annahmen untersucht Anna Rebecca Hoffmann, wie diese Erinnerungsarbeit konkret ausgestaltet wird. Dazu hat sie die Ausstellungskonzepte von zehn literaturmusealen Einrichtungen (zu Büchner, Lessing, Brecht, May, Kleist, Grass, Strittmatter, Storm, Seghers, Raabe) analysiert und Interviews mit den dort jeweils Verantwortlichen geführt. Auf dieser Datenbasis wird eine Typologie literaturmusealer Erinnerungsarbeit entwickelt, die erstmals systematisch Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten der Museen und Gedenkstätten aufarbeitet und strukturiert

    'What is Comics Journalism,' and 'Why is the author not dead at all?' Because literature and journalism deal differently with "authorship" and "author," this work renegotiates these concepts. It analyzes the author's importance in comics journalism, especially concerning the verification and authentication of the production process. This study gives a broad and extensive overview of the various forms of contemporary comics journalism, and argues that authorship in comics journalism can only be adequately understood by considering the author both on the textual and extratextual level. By combining comics analyses with cultural, sociological, and literary studies approaches, this study introduces the 'comics journalistic pact,' which is an invisible agreement between author and reader, addressing issues of narration ('voice'), testimony ('face'), and journalistic engagement ('hands'). It categorizes comics journalism as a borderline genre between literature, culture, art, and journalism due to its interdisciplinary nature.
