    Far from teleological historiography, the pan-European perspective on Early Modern drama offered in this volume provides answers to why, how, where and when the given phenomena of theatre appear in history. Using theories of circulation and other concepts of exchange, transfer and movement, the authors analyze the development and differentiation of European secular and religious drama, within the disciplinary framework of comparative literature and the history of literature and concepts. Within this frame, aspects of major interest are the relationship between tradition and innovation, the status of genre, the proportion of autonomous and heteronomous creational dispositions within the artefacts or genres they belong to, as well as strategies of functionalization in the context of a given part of the cultural net. Contributions cover a broad range of topics, including poetics of Early Modern Drama; political, institutional and social practices; history of themes and motifs (Stoffgeschichte); history of genres/cross-fertilization between genres; textual traditions and distribution of texts; questions of originality and authorship; theories of circulation and net structures in Drama Studies

    The ancient stories of Pero, who breastfed her father, and of the unnamend Roman daughter, who breastfed her mother, were of tremendous interest to artists and their audiences from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment. »The Roman Charity« investigates the iconography of the breastfeeding daughter from the perspective of queer sexuality and erotic maternity. The book explores the popularity of a topic that renders modern viewers uneasy, but appealed to early modern observers for its eroticizing shock value, its ironic take on the venerable concept of »charity«, and its implied critique of patriarchal power structures. It tries to understand why and how early modern viewers found an incestuous, adult breastfeeding scene »good to think with«, and aims at expanding and queering our notions of early modern sexuality

    Objektivität ist ein Stilmerkmal - strategisch eingesetzt und historisch wandelbar. Die kultur- und geschichtswissenschaftliche Forschung hat die Geschichte der Objektivität zunehmend zum Thema gemacht, dabei aber die Berührungslinien zwischen Kunst und Naturwissenschaft nur wenig beachtet. Tatsächlich aber hatten die Kunsthistoriker, Mediziner, Schriftsteller und Künstler des 19. Jh. ein gemeinsames Thema: die Suche nach dem »wahren Bild«. Was künstlerische Wahrheit sei und was ein wissenschaftliches Verfahren ausmache, wurde in aller Breite sowohl in der Kunst als auch in den Wissenschaften diskutiert. Die beiden kulturellen Figuren des 'Künstlers' und des 'Wissenschaftlers' konturierten sich dabei parallel zu einem zeitgenössischen Geschlechterdiskurs, der in die neue Bestimmung von Objektivität mit einfloss. Der Band behandelt die Vorgeschichte der heutigen Trennung von Kunst und Wissenschaft und ist zugleich ein Beitrag zur Geschichte der visuellen Objektivität.

    This book studies literary sociability during the belle époque (1890-1914) by comparing and relating organizations of authors with intellectual sociability in general. Drawing on a combination of methods including social network analysis, existing histories of Dutch and French speaking literature are questioned. This study shows, for instance, how author's societies and literary journals were functional in the symbolic struggle between 'dilettante' writers on the one hand and self declared 'professional' authors on the other. It concludes that Belgian authorship was shaped within a social space that was much broader than the national social space, especially as far as the social construction of the Belgian author-intellectual was concerned. As such, being an intellectual became an important category of personal identity

    Jan Walravens (1920-1965) played a central role in Flemish literature as he introduced and facilitated literary experiments after the second world war. He was a leading essayist and literary critic, who wrote thousands of reviews showing the younger generation the way to French existentialism and to the international avant-garde. In addition to novels and shorter fiction, he published in-depth philosophical essays on Kierkegaard, Sade and Sartre. His international network of artistic relations turned him into a central figure in the Flemish literary world, a position he held until his untimely death at the age of forty-five. Jan Walravens and the Experiment presents ten essays that chart the various aspects of Walravens' immense activity: his philosophical thinking on Sade, his relation with the visual arts, his position as an avant-gardist, his defense of poetry old and new, his view on the French nouveau roman, his novels, and his propagation of a new kind of literary diary. The authors have used the Walravens archive and unearthed some material that has never before been brought to the public's attention, most notably the facsimile of a 'cadavre exquis' Walravens created with Albert Bontridder and Florent Welles

    Canada in the Frame explores a photographic collection held at the British Library that offers a unique view of late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century Canada. The collection, which contains in excess of 4,500 images, taken between 1895 and 1923, covers a dynamic period in Canada's national history and provides a variety of views of its landscapes, developing urban areas and peoples. Colonial Copyright Law was the driver by which these photographs were acquired; unmediated by curators, but rather by the eye of the photographer who created the image, they showcase a grass-roots view of Canada during its early history as a Confederation.Canada in the Frame describes this little-known collection and includes over 100 images from it. The author asks key questions about what it shows contemporary viewers of Canada and its photographic history, and about the peculiar view these photographs offer of a former part of the British Empire in a post-colonial age, viewed from the old 'Heart of Empire'. Case studies are included on subjects such as urban centres, railroads and migration, which analyse the complex ways in which photographers approached their subjects, in the context of the relationship between Canada, the British Empire and photography

    Die Choreographin Meg Stuart arbeitet mit Tänzern, Schauspielern, Musikern, Videokünstlern und bildenden Künstlern zusammen. Auf diese Weise entstehen Choreographien, die weniger auf der reinen Tanzbewegung aufbauen als vielmehr auf Relationen zwischen Körperbewegung, Stimme, Videobild, Kostüm und Raumanordnung. Die Unterteilung der Bühne, die Gleichzeitigkeit und das Nebeneinander von unabhängigen Momenten, die Bewegung auf der Stelle heben die Linearität des Verlaufs auf. Die Choreographien entgrenzen sich in Richtung Bewegungs- und Sprachstudie, Installation und Tableau vivant. Die Studie betrachtet diese Merkmale erstmals unter dem Gesichtspunkt eines erweiterten Bildbegriffs. Dabei werden Themen wie die Projektion, die Blicklenkung, die Pose, der Affekt und die Duration ausgearbeitet. Die Frage nach Bildqualitäten in der Ordnung von Bewegung und Choreographie geht über die Fokussierung auf Meg Stuart hinaus und liefert einen wichtigen Beitrag für die Bild- und Kunstwissenschaft.

At the end of his life and in the first two decades of the twentieth century, Gezelle was hailed by the avant-garde as the founder of modernFlemish poetry.     For the first time since Chevrels seminal monography Le naturalisme: étude d’un mouvement littéraire international (1982), this study presents an encompassing approach to European naturalism. By means of a logical theoretical framework drawing on both comparative literature and narratology, Pieter Borghart proposes a more nuanced definition of naturalism than those traditionally found in the existing literature.     This edited volume is the first scholarly tome exclusively dedicated to Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory of the literary chronotope. This concept, initially developed in the 1930s and used as a frame of reference throughout Bakhtin’s own writings, has been highly influential in literary studies. After an extensive introduction that serves as a ‘state of the art’, the volume is divided into four main parts: Philosophical Reflections, Relevance of the Chronotope for Literary History, Chronotopical Readings and Some Perspectives for Literary Theory. These thematic categories contain contributions by well-established Bakhtin specialists such as Gary Saul Morson and Michael Holquist, as well as a number of essays by scholars who have published on this subject before. Together the papers in this volume explore the implications of Bakhtin’s concept of the chronotope for a variety of theoretical topics such as literary imagination, polysystem theory and literary adaptation; for modern views on literary history ranging from the hellenistic romance to nineteenth-century realism; and for analyses of well-known novelists and poets as diverse as Milton, Fielding, Dickinson, Dostoevsky, Papadiamandis and DeLillo

    Im Jahr 1889 malte Fritz von Uhde die „Kinderstube“, die seine drei Töchter in ihrem Spiel- und Schlafraum zeigt. Wie selbstverständlich mutet dem heutigen Betrachter diese detailreiche und lebendige Szene an und doch gibt es nur wenige vergleichbare Darstellungen. Gemälde und Grafiken vom späten Mittelalter bis zum ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert zeigen die Ikonografie des spielenden Kindes sowie gängige Spiel- und Wohnmilieus und machen deutlich, dass erst seit gut 200 Jahren vermehrt Räume mit der Funktionszuschreibung eines Kinderzimmers versehen wurden. Dies hängt eng mit einer sich wandelnden Beurteilung der Kindheitsphase und des Kinderspiels zusammen, was wahrnehmbare Auswirkungen auf die Darstellungsmodi und -kontexte hat. Inwieweit Uhdes „Kinderstube“ mit der alltäglichen Lebenswelt bürgerlicher Kinder in Verbindung gebracht werden kann, veranschaulichen sachkulturelle und schriftlichen Überlieferungen. Sie eröffnen Einblicke in die Verbreitung und Einrichtung von Kinderstuben, in gängige Spiele und Spielzeuge sowie zu Kinderkleidung im 19. Jahrhundert. Durch diesen interdisziplinären Forschungsansatz zeichnet die Untersuchung ein umfassendes und lebendiges Bild vergangener kindlicher Lebenswelten.

    Herhaling speelt een centrale rol in menselijke cultuuruitingen. Slaap - liedjes en smeekbeden, protesten en strijdkreten: van de wieg tot het graf begeleidt de herhaling de essentiële gebeurtenissen in het leven.     Which recent methodological innovations have occurred in the field of comparative literature? What are the critical paradigms behind the practices of comparative research today? These questions are the starting point of the present issue which brings together different comparative studies from the vantage points of: methodological and epistemological reflection about (in)comparability and difference; transversal phenomena of acculturation, networks and intercultural dialogues; the hybridity of (natural and conceptual) languages, translation and transposition. In this way, the studies presented in this volume hope to foster discussions about the foundation, the history, the limits and the methods of comparatives studies today.

    Since the beginning of reception, Büchner's epoch-making narrative Lenz was praised for its iconic quality, for the suggestive verbal mediacy of visual experience and the evocation of mental pictures. But so far research has paid no attention to the fact that this specific interrelation of language and image also strongly influenced the reception of the narrative in the fine arts. For the first time, this study analyses the complex relations between text and image in Lenz and its reception comprehensively, i.e. in consideration of the trias of literary communication: author, work and (artistic) reader. Firstly it is shown how the text-image-relations form the aesthetic fundament of the narrative as means of composition, but also as thematic, metareflexive element. Subsequently the different forms of imagery are analysed, which are generated in this way. The final part of the study presents illustrations based on Lenz and confronts them with the text. More than 700 pictures from 47 artists could be found, e.g. the expressive self-portraits of Walter Gramatté, Toyen's surrealistic compositions, the 'degenerative' etchings of Susanne Theumer or Thomas Kohl's landscape-representations.

    Seit Beginn der Rezeption wird Büchners epochale Erzählung Lenz für ihre Bildkraft, für die suggestive sprachliche Vermittlung visueller Erfahrung und Evozierung geistiger Bilder gerühmt. Dass dieses spezifische Naheverhältnis von Sprache und Bild auch die Rezeption in der Bildenden Kunst nachhaltig beeinflusste, wurde jedoch in der Büchner-Forschung bislang so gut wie nicht beachtet. Die vorliegende Studie untersucht die vielschichtigen Beziehungen von Text und Bild im Lenz und in seiner Wirkungsgeschichte erstmals übergreifend, also unter Berücksichtigung der Kommunikationstriade von Werk, Autor und (künstlerisch produktivem) Rezipienten. Dazu wurde der Ansatz der literaturzentrierten Intermedialitätsforschung um den Aspekt einer diachronen Verankerung der intermedialen Kontaktnahme erweitert. Resultat dieser Modifikation in der Theoriebildung war ein dreiteiliges Analyseschema: Zunächst wird gezeigt, wie Text-Bild-Relationen das ästhetische Fundament der Erzählung prägen, indem sie als Gestaltungsmittel, aber auch als thematisches, metareflexives Element Verwendung finden.     Over the last few decades cultural sociology and book history have stimulated the study of publishers and their role in the production, distribution, reception and consumption of literature. As such these disciplines have constantly reminded us that literary theory does not study ‘autonomous artefacts’, but texts which are mediated and influenced by various ‘institutions’. But what are the implications?The contributions to this issue of Cahier voor Literatuurwetenschap confront the results of recent and ongoing studies about publishing with the disciplinary idiosyncrasies of general and comparative literature.
