Queer and Bookish: Eve Kosofksy Sedgwick as Book Artist represents the first book-length study to explore the intersections of Sedgwick’s critical writing, poetry, and, most importantly, book art, making the case that her art criticism, especially her meditations on domestic and nineteenth-century photography, and "artist’s book" projects are as formally complex and brilliant, conceptually significant and life-changing, as her literary criticism and theory. In addition, the book represents a significant intervention into recent debates about reparative reading, surface reading, and the descriptive turn across the humanities, because of its sustained, positive accounts on Sedgwick’s books as visual, textural, and material objects. The book ranges across Sedgwick’s published output, from The Coherence of Gothic Conventions (1980) to the posthumously published The Weather in Proust (2011), and features her meditations on a wide variety of art-historical topoi, including Judith Scott’s queer/crip fiber art; the anality of Polykleitos’s Doryphorus; queer Modernist typography; Piranesi’s punitive space; Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell’s queer holy family; Manet’s frontality and thalassic aesthetics; fat and thin aesthetics of various stripes; and the queer photography of Anna Atkins, Clementina Hawarden, and Julia Margaret Cameron; Baron De Mayer, Eugene Atget, and P.H. Emerson; as well as David Hockney, Ken Brown, and her own father, a NASA lunar photographer. The book climaxes with two chapter-length explorations of Sedgwick’s own late-life book-art practice: her panda Valentine alphabet cards (c. 1996) and her Last Days of Pompeii/Cavafy unique artist’s book (c. 2007).

Women with Cameras (Anonymous) is a new artist's book by Anne Collier (born 1970), with a text by Hilton Als (winner of the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Criticism), that consists of a sequence of 80 images of found amateur photographs that each depict a female subject in the act of holding a camera or taking a photograph. Dating from the 1970s to the early 2000s, these artifacts of the pre-digital age were collected by Collier over a number of years from flea markets, thrift stores and online market places. Each of these photographs has, at some point in the recent past, been discarded by its original owner. The concept of "abandonment," of photographic images and the personal histories that they represent, is central to Women with Cameras (Anonymous), which amplifies photography's relationship with memory, melancholia and loss. The sequence of the images in Collier's book follows the format of her 35mm slide projection work 'Women with Cameras (Anonymous)' (2016), that was recently shown to great acclaim in Tokyo, Japan, and Basel, Switzerland

For three months, Veronika Spierenburg moved from Japan's south to it's north. Photography has become an obsession in Japan where only a few unspoiled spots can be found. From this, Spierenburg created an artist's book which shows the richness of textures, artifacts, traditional as well as modern architecture in an idiosyncratic mood. The photographs shed light on how Japanese culture manifests itself in its craftsmanship. The buildings of famous architects such as Kenzo Tange, Togo Murano, Tadao Ando, Kazuo Shinohara and Kisho Kurokawa are presented in the book along with folk architecture.--

The book collects, repeats and processes over 80 source collages, incorporating drawings, sketches, writing and marks, often in combination with images. Much of the language in the collages is drawn from the protests against police brutality that swept the US in 2020: Pendleton has transcribed slogans sprayed on walls and windows, combining them with his own improvised language as well as photographs of art objects and artifacts (sculptures, masks and figures). The work points to the poetic pressure that uprisings place on language itself, compressing it in some cases into the barest of forms: simple sequences like "ACAB" or "1312," further reducible to the elements "A, B, C," "1, 2, 3." In parallel with these operations of decomposition and recomposition, the collages in As Heavy as Sculpture have been duplicated, laid out across 30 sheets and folded into book signatures, creating new displacements and cuts. This folding is in effect a chance operation, a procedure of recombination and translation, resulting in arrangements of images not planned out in advance

Settlement -- Hedges -- Plots -- Blood/soil -- Petitions (for an alien relative) -- Locution/location -- Threshold -- Milestones -- Landscapes (as portraits) -- More curbs -- Pavement -- Frequency (Alka's testimony) -- Estates : last offices concerning the curbs of the body -- Notes & objects cited. "Divya Victor documents how immigrants and Americans navigate the liminal sites of everyday living: lawns, curbs, and sidewalks, undergirded by violence, but also constantly repaved with new possibilities of belonging. Curb witnesses immigrant survival, familial bonds, and interracial parenting in the context of nationalist and white-supremacist violence against South Asians. The book refutes the binary of the model minority and the monstrous, dark "other" by reclaiming the throbbing, many-tongued, vermillion heart of kith"--

Spontaneity and brevity are key to his artistic vision, as is the idea of endless permutation and proliferation at the expense of a final, fixed form. American conceptual artist Pacifico Silano's practice is rooted in excavating the printed ephemera of gay culture to create new images that comment on loss, longing and queer melancholy. In particular, Silano uses the gestures of framing, cropping and layering vintage gay erotica to comment on the HIV/AIDS crisis and its reverberations on queer lives, which included the loss of the artist's uncle at the height of the epidemic. 'I Wish I Never Saw the Sunshine' is Silano's first artists' book, and engages with an ambitious accordion-folded format that references Silano's photo-based installations: two twenty-panel long sequences that can be read as both one continuous collage and a sequence of individual images. Included in the book is an interview with the artist by José Diaz, Chief Curator of The Andy Warhol Museum

"This multi-layered work explores the Black experience of driving in America over the past 85 years. By picturing how it has too often been marked by fear, violence and death, 'A Parallel Road' challenges representations of the American ideal of the road trip that have long dominated our view through artistic and literary media. Referencing the historical Negro Motorist Green Book, and layering archival and new images, it examines the question of how long the road will continue to be a site of violence and oppression for Black people in American society."--artist's webpage

Diagramming fluidity is a research project by design researcher and visual sociologist Floriane Misslin. The project investigates how producers of fashion photography actualize the fluidity of gender in an industry that is oh so dominated by established modes of production and consumption based on the gendered binary division of women(swear) and men(swear). The project outlines the conditions in which the fluidity of gender is being actualized in the production of fashion photography. Floriane Misslin interviewed several practitioners to discuss, question, and reflect upon the past and present of gender fluidity within the field. What gendered divisions have been made so far within fashion (photography)? Is there any room for non-binary visualizations? What is left unsaid, and what is missing? The outcome of the series of interviews is a selection of manifestos that both textually and visually as well as diagrammatically show the different means of making a gender fluid approach to fashion more visible within visual culture. About Floriane Misslin: Somewhere between visual and critical design, fashion and gender studies, sociology and its research methods is where Floriane Misslin's practice resides. Misslin designs methodologies and media that provide for vivid and interactive ways to explore the entanglements of bodies and visual culture, and more particularly their relation to gender

"London, once known as the 'Metropole', was the mother city at the heart of a vast empire which at its peak encompassed a quarter of all land on the planet. Its maternal name belied a profoundly hierarchical and unequal relationship with power radiating outwards from the urban heart, and territorial riches feeding back in return. The British Empire has long since collapsed but in its place has risen a new world power; globalised capitalism. London, rebranded an 'investment opportunity', is now a city of continuous demolition, shifting cranes, and glittering new high rises. "Metropole" is a document of the brutal uprooting of London's foundations at the hands of corporate developers, for the benefit of wealthy investors and absentee property speculators. In the wake of aggressive high-end development, genuinely affordable housing has diminished and residents of London are pushed ever further out from the core. Photographed over dozens of winter nights spent wandering through the escalating city, "Metropole" records the dizzying effects of a capital influx on London. The frameworks of luxury residential towers are documented during construction, and the use of double exposures layers building upon building. This proliferating tangle mirrors the threatening scale of alteration in the city. Perspective and orientation are lost in the process, emulating the sense of loss that many Londoners now feel."--Publisher's statement

The alchemy of the border: Troy Montes-Michie in conversation with Brent Hayes Edwards -- Troy Montes-Michie: Fashion notes / Andrea Andersson -- Troy Montes-Michie: Visioning Black study / Tina Campt -- After words on new beginnings / Cameron Shaw. To tailor a garment by "rock of eye" is to rely on the drape on experience over mathematical measurement in the fitting process. It is a kind of drawing in space--a freehand, an intuition, a trust of materials. Rock of Eye, published on the occasion of Troy Montes-Michie's (born 1985) solo exhibition at the California African American Museum, is a collection of the artist's collages, drawings, and found and woven images sourced from vintage erotic magazines, French tailoring magazines, found photographs, and other materials. These materials are familiar from Montes-Michie's recent large-scale paintings and collages that center on the Black male body and his series that traces the social history and form of the zoot suit. Troy Montes-Michie was born in El Paso and his practice reflects his experience growing up along the US/Mexico border. This book is a study in ambiguity between portraiture and landscape; his are the cuts and folds of patterning and mapping. In Rock of Eye, Montes-Michie's stitches suture histories and geographies; they establish thresholds for crossing; his needle hits rock

"Batty’s work playfully explores a geometric and systemic logic through the colour and value of the stamps used and their positioning on the envelope. Bearing traces of their passage through the world and the postal system each is also a collaboration with the anonymous hand that franks or cancels the stamps. Some of these collaborators have taken a clear pleasure in adding to the harmony of the composition, others have chosen to aggressively negate it."--Printed Matter website
