    Although the objective of the Monumental Brass Society is to promote the study both of monumental brasses and of incised slabs, research on the two media has proceeded along separate and largely independent lines. This is the first work to combine the stylistic analysis of monumental brasses with incised slabs. Like brasses, incised slabs are susceptible to stylistic analysis to identify workshop groupings. This book identifies existing and recorded Purbeck marble incised slabs from the pre-Black Death London workshops and compares their designs with those of contemporary brasses. The result is a fuller picture than has previously been available of the operations of the London marblers before the Black Death. It suggests that in the late thirteenth century production was on a larger scale than previously believed, and evidence is outlined for the existence of multiple workshops producing brasses and incised slabs in London for much of the period covered by this study.

    All chapters in this edited volume address a concrete situation where this concept is used. The authors demonstrate how it can be applied in interpretations of images, buildings and places from different historical periods, and how it affects the ability to create meaning and knowledge. The interpretative action thus entails different forms of contextualisation.

    The book is primarily addressed to students of art history and others who take an interest in questions of visuality and visual practices. Offering not only a theoretical understanding of the concept, it strives to point out ways and possibilities of the practical use of contextualisation.

    The concepts of art history were developed in the nineteenth century. This can inhibit dialogue with neighbouring disciplines. The concept “medium”, which belongs to the late twentieth century, can provide assistance and connect the argument of art history to the contemporary state of consciousness at least in the cultural sciences dealing with communication. At the centre of the book lie questions of the use and effect of objects. Dealing with a series of high-ranking art works, an observational method is practised that is both historically founded and compatible with modern discourses. The six case studies address the Naumburg Stifterfiguren, Pietro Lorenzetti’s frescos in Assisi, the Parament of Narbonne, the tomb of Archbishop Chichele in Canterbury, Raphael’s Sistine Madonna in Dresden, and the self-portraits of Anton Pilgram in St Stephen’s Church in Vienna. Die Konzepte der Kunstgeschichte sind im 19. Jahrhundert entwickelt worden. Das erschwert den Dialog mit vielen Nachbardisziplinen. Das Konzept "Medium", das dem ausgehenden 20. Jahrhundert angehört, soll dem abhelfen und das Argument der Kunstgeschichte mit dem gegenwärtigen Bewusstseinsstand mindestens in denjenigen Kulturwissenschaften verknüpfen, die sich mit Kommunikation befassen. Im Mittelpunkt des Buches stehen die Fragen nach Gebrauch und Wirkung der Objekte. Eingeübt wird eine Betrachtungsweise von hochrangigen Kunstwerken, die sowohl historisch fundiert als auch modernen Diskursen kompatibel ist. Die sechs Fallstudien befassen sich mit den Naumburger Stifterfiguren, Pietro Lorenzettis Fresken in Assisi, dem Parament von Narbonne, dem Grabmal des Erzbischofs Chichele in Canterbury, Raphaels Sixtinischer Madonna in Dresden, und den Selbstbildnissen Anton Pilgrams in der Wiener Stephankirche.

Grace surfaced time and again in the period's discussions of the individual pursuit of the good life and in the collective quest to determine the best means to a harmonious society. It rose to prominence in theological debates about the soul's salvation and in secular debates about how best to live at court. It was absolutely central to the thinking of Reformation figures such as Erasmus and Luther, and just as central to the Counter-Reformation response. It played a pivotal role in the humanist campaign to develop a shared literary language and it featured prominently in the efforts of writers and artists to express the full potential of mankind. Grace abounded in the Italian Renaissance, yet it was as hard to define as it was ever-present. The courtier and writer, Baldassare Castiglione, for example, described it as that 'certain air' which distinguished excellent courtiers and court ladies from their mediocre counterparts, while his artist friend, Raffaello Sanzio (Raphael), saw it as that quality produced when one conceals the hard work and effort of art behind a veil of nonchalance and ease. This classically-inspired grace was used by many as a way of claiming distinction for themselves and of arguing for the pre-eminence of their chosen disciplines, but it drew criticism too from those who saw it as self-interested and superficial. Quarrels about the meaning and value of grace involved theologians, artists, writers and philosophers and intersected with the most famous debates of the time about language, society and the role of literature and the visual arts. As well as shedding light on what grace meant to those who invoked it, this book aims to trace the interdisciplinary transactions that the word made possible. Each chapter combines consideration of pivotal texts and images with interdisciplinary approaches, examining what grace meant to protagonists of the Italian Renaissance and exploring the correspondence, whether direct or indirect, between them. What emerges is a network of friendships, rivalries, agreements and disputes: a sketch of the interconnections that made the Italian Renaissance"--

    In this dissertation, I build discussions around the use of digital technologies in association with art and art historical contexts to ask greater cultural heritage questions regarding humanity's relationship with digital technology. My work reflects on the emergence of digital humanities as a field in response to the experimentation and incorporation of digital methods, with an emphasis on extended reality (XR) technologies, for conducting humanities research in relation to arts and culture-based organizations. I investigate the advantages and disadvantages digital tools bring to the field of Art History today. In particular, the project focuses on modes of publishing, display, and information-capture in museums and archives that illustrate a break from "traditional" models. In doing so, I argue that digital modalities provide a distinctly different paradigm for epistemologies of art and culture. Extending previous research in museum studies and media studies, I address a selection of the latest technological interventions within museum and cultural heritage contexts that operate within a spectrum of immersive modalities and use extended reality technologies. The dissertation brings together many humanities disciplines to investigate how sharing XR within a museum both disrupts and complements the time-tested benefits of object-centered methods of display, representation, and education. The phase "virtual actualities" within the title of the dissertation signals changes in practice that are being brought about as digital technologies, and particularly XR, become incorporated into fields of arts and culture. "Actualities" connote the practical matters associated with producing, presenting, and preserving digitally immersive materials in the contexts of gallery, library, archive, and museum (GLAM) organizations. "Reality" in turn is reserved for the qualities perceived when discussing the characteristics that define 3D and XR production. At the fore in addressing new topics in museum practices and by conducting new experimentation through the application of immersive technologies, this dissertation can offer new information for digital art history, cultural heritage, and museum studies. The aggregation of examples throughout the dissertation aims to provide a survey of the field of XR in its current state within GLAM settings in order to offer insight and guidance for future development and implementation
