Their still-standing survival is a loud affirmation of their presence, in which we can admire the struggle against the power of Nature aesthetically manifested during the decay. This volume takes a thematic approach to examining the aesthetics of ruins. It looks at the general aspects of architectural decay and its classical forms of admiration and then turns towards ruins from both classical and contemporary periods, from both Western and non-Western areas, and with examples from "high art" as well as popular culture. Combining the methodologies of art history, aesthetics and cultural history, this book opens up new ways of looking at the phenomenon of ruins"--

    "Édifier un monde habitable, tel fut de tout temps le rôle majeur de l'architecte, tandis que, de son côté, le peintre n'a jamais cessé de nourrir l'imaginaire architectural, même lorsqu'il figurait édifices et paysages urbains identifiables. Mais en inventant caprices, cités oniriques ou idéales, le peintre ne se limitait plus à glorifier l'ars edificandi, il le fécondait. L', "équerre" et le "pinceau" ont donc, des siècles durant, collaboré, fût-ce à leur insu et jusque dans leur rivalité. Cet ouvrage s'attache à cerner les moments essentiels de l'ambivalente histoire qui conduisit peintres et architectes à pratiquer excellemment les deux arts, dès lors qu'à la Renaissance la fierté d'appartenir aux arts libéraux put devenir l'apanage des uns et des autres. Si, dès l'âge classique, les voies de la peinture se sont séparées de celles de l'architecture, notre postmodernité ne peut que constater la disparition du peintre au profit de l'irrésistible ascension du plasticien, dans le temps où l'architecte ne peut plus rien sans l'ingénieur."--Page 4 of cover

    Tadao Ando's remarkable Casa Wabi dots the Pacific coastline of Mexico with structures by Alberto Kalach, Alvaro Siza, Kengo Kuma, Gloria Cabral, Solano Benitez, Jorge Ambrosi, and Gabriela Etchegaray. Founded in 2013 by renowned Mexican artist Bosco Sodi, it combines artist residencies, a gallery, and living quarters with classrooms, gardens, and public space. Tadao Ando centers the foundation on a 312-meter-long wall; his trademark concrete structures radiate off it, capped in woven palm tree leaves for ventilation. These local palapa-style roofs are often the only element distinguishing indoor and outdoor spaces, an effect complemented by wooden shutters in place of paned glass windows. Other unusual native building materials include Mexican parota wood and marmolina. Led by director Carla Sodi, Casa Wabi challenges architects and artists to contemplate nature deeply, as it provides new tools for area residents. Casa Wabi is both a world-class architectural destination and a model for new strategies of creative intervention within economically depressed communities

    Artist and noted muralist Diego Rivera (Mexico 1886-1957) became a Founding Member of El Colegio Nacional on May 15, 1943. The book includes a link to eight of the lectures he gave free of charge there in 1955.
