The best way to approach a work of art is to enjoy it. In order to enjoy a literary work, we have to consider its correct context and its specific artistic qualities. The book is conceived as a general and enjoyable introduction to the experience of the work of art in Western culture

    Vad är ett konstverk? Finns det någon begränsning på vad som kan kallas konst? Vad skiljer konstverk från andra hantverksprodukter? Kan vi rättfärdiga omdömet att ett konstverk är bättre än ett annat? Sådana frågor ställs inom den filosofiska estetiken, och denna bok är en introduktion till estetikens historia. Länge betraktades konst och estetiska upplevelser som möjliga att värdera efter deras förmåga att likna andra saker. Enligt denna uppfattning har skapandet av konst ett värde bara om det fyller en nyttofunktion, i likhet med andra hantverk, och upplevelsen av konst har ett värde bara om den ger kunskap eller fostran, som vetenskapen och moralen. Under andra halvan av sjuttonhundratalet började denna uppfattning om konstens natur och funktion att ifrågasättas. Den här boken skildrar denna förändring och dess avspegling hos sju tyska filosofer: Immanuel Kant (1724-1804), Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770-1831), Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling (1770-1854), Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860), Martin Heidegger (1889-1976) och Hans-Georg Gadamer (1900-2002). Ett genomgående tema är konflikten mellan två olika uppfattningar om konst. Den ena beskriver konsten som en osjälvständig del av ett större kulturellt sammanhang. Den andra uppfattar däremot konsten som självständig i relation till kulturen och samhället i övrigt, och som att den har rätt att vägra låta sig användas för andra syften än sina egna.     "The idea of "art in research" and "research as art" have risen over the past two decades as important critical focuses for the philosophy of media, aesthetics, and art. Of particular interest is how the methodologies of art and science might be merged to create a better conceptual understanding of art-based research. In this book, Dieter Mersch deconstructs and displaces the terminology that typically accompanies the question of the relationship between art and scientific truth.     For decades, aesthetics has been subjected to a variety of critiques, often concerning its treatment of beauty or the autonomy of art. Collectively, these complaints have generated an anti-aesthetic stance now prevalent in the contemporary art world. Yet if we examine the motivations for these critiques, Michael Kelly argues, we find theorists and artists hungering for a new kind of aesthetics, one better calibrated to contemporary art and its moral and political demands.     The Owls Are Not What They Seem is a selective history of modern and contemporary engagements with animals in the visual arts and how these explorations relate to the evolution of scientific knowledge regarding animals. Arnaud Gerspacher argues that artistic knowledge, with its experimental nature, ability to contain contradictions, and more capacious understanding of truth-claims, presents a valuable supplement to scientific knowledge when it comes to encountering and existing alongside nonhuman animals and life worlds. 0Though critical of art works involving animals that are unreflective and exploitative, Gerspacher's exploration of aesthetic practices by Allora & Calzadilla, Pierre Huyghe, Agnieszka Kurant, Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook, Martin Roth, David Weber-Krebs, and others suggests that, alongside scientific practices, art has much to offer in revealing the otherworldly qualities of animals and forging ecopolitical solidarities with fellow earthlings

    Meaning in the visual arts centers on how the physical work makes its content or presence visible. The art object is fundamental. Indeed, the different object forms of each visual medium allows our experience of space-time, and our relations to other people, to be aesthetically embodied in unique ways. Through these embodiments, visual art compensates for what is otherwise existentially lost, and becomes part of what makes life worth living.
