    On doit à Yves Michaud une analyse fondamentale de l'évolution contemporaine de l'Art.Dans le domaine des arts visuels qu'on appelle Art, nous sommes passés d'oeuvres (traditionnellement tableaux et sculptures) à des installations, des environnements, des dispositifs multimédias qui enveloppent le spectateur dans des expériences multi-sensorielles. Telle est la "vaporisation de l'art", son passage à l'état gazeux.La seconde évolution, que décrit cet ouvrage, "le triomphe de l'esthétique ", c'est le mouvement d'esthétisation générale de nos milieux de vie.Il faut que tout soit "luxe, calme et volupté", plaisant, charmant, lisse, agréable, ou encore excitant, intéressant dans le registre couramment appelé "esthétique".L'apparition au cours du XVIIIᵉ siècle du concept d'esthétique fut indissociable du changement des expériences que donnaient les arts et de nouvelles formes de la sensibilité.Il en va de même aujourd'hui.L'expérience esthétique a changé : de frontale elle est devenue atmosphérique et se fait sous le signe du plaisir, du sensible et de l'éprouvé.Nous sommes en présence d'une révolution sensible qui rend indispensable une révolution dans "la théorie esthétique", mais la révolution de la sensibilité hyper-esthétique est encore plus importante que celle de la théorie.Le monde des atmosphères n'est plus celui de la perception esthétique.Le monde du Grand Art est mort et bien mort.
