    "This book analyzes the relationship between, on the one hand, the emergence of abstract proposals in the framework of avant-garde groups and, on the other, the institutionalization and newfound hegemony of the abstract poetics as part of the region's imaginary of modernization. The author focuses mainly on Argentina and Brazil due to the constant and abundant artistic-institutional exchange between the two countries, and to the shared emphasis on abstraction, which was viewed as an active force in the project of sociocultural transformation that a range of sectors in both countries were advocating.     "Bridging Brazilian cultural studies and environmental humanities, Land That Seemed to Us Quite Vast examines images and meanings of nature and landscape in contemporary art and poetry in Brazil. It identifies general tendencies in aesthetic modes of environmental thinking and representation, and it includes studies of established figures such as Manoel de Barros and Frans Krajcberg and representatives of a newer generation, including Josely Vianna Baptista and Nuno Ramos. This study reveals a diverse range of artistic responses to heightened awareness of environmental change and vulnerability in Brazil, including efforts to directly connect art with issues and activism and more abstractly oriented explorations of concepts animating or unsettling conventional understandings of the environment. While attuned to particularities of their Brazilian context, Land That Seemed to Us Quite Vast makes a case for considering these poets and artists as participants in eco-cosmopolitan movements to rethink through artistic practice relationships between the human self and more-than-human environments" --

    "Black Milk is the first in-depth analysis of the visual archives that effloresced around slavery in Brazil and North America in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In its latter stages the book also explores the ways in which the museum cultures of North America and Brazil have constructed slavery over the last hundred years. These institutional legacies emerge as startlingly different from each other at almost every level. Working through comparative close readings of a myriad art objects - including prints, photographs, oil paintings, watercolours, sculptures, ceramics, and a host of ephemera - Black Milk celebrates just how radically alternative Brazilian artistic responses to Atlantic slavery were. Despite its longevity and vastness, Brazilian slavery as a cultural phenomenon has remained hugely neglected, in both academic and popular studies, particularly when compared to North American slavery. Consequently much of Black Milk is devoted to uncovering, celebrating, and explaining the hidden treasury of visual material generated by artists working in Brazil when they came to record and imaginatively reconstruct their slave inheritance. There are painters of genius (most significantly Jean Baptiste Debret), printmakers (discussion is focussed on Angelo Agostini the 'Brazilian Daumier') and some of the greatest photographers of the nineteenth century, lead by Augusto Stahl. The radical alterity of the Brazilian materials is revealed by comparing them at every stage with a series of related but fascinatingly and often shockingly dissimilar North American works of art.     Curated by Emanoel Araujo, the exhibition - which also pays homage to the 300 year anniversary of Our Lady of Aparecida (São Paulo, Brazil), the patron saint of Brazil - comprises close to 400 art works representing baroque references in the academic and popular cultures of Brazil, Portugal and Africa, between the 17th and 19th centuries. Focused on the varied manifestations of the artistic style in Portugal and Brazil with emphasis on its Afro-Brazilian and European heritage, the catalogue comprises sculptures (terracota, ivory, and full wood polichromated), oratories, pulpits, stone and wood carvings, altarpieces, tiles, silverware, porcelain and paintings of artists fundamental for the understanding of the Luso-Brasilian baroque movement such as Francisco dos Santos Xavier (1739-1814), known as Xavier das Conchas, José Joaquim da Rocha (1737-1807), Joaquim José da Natividade (1771 -1841), Leandro Joaquim (1738-1798), José Patrício da Silva Manso (1753-1801), Frei Agostinho da Piedade, OSB (? - 1661), Frei Jesuíno do Monte Carmelo (1764-1819), José Teófilo de Jesus (1758-1847) and Antônio Joaquim Franco Velasco (1780-1883) amongst others
