    Die Pluralisierung des Philosophiebegriffs gehört zu den Charakteristika der ersten Jahrhunderte nach Christus – einer mit tiefgreifenden Veränderungen verbundenen Epoche, die sich allgemein in faszinierender Weise mit unserer Gegenwart berührt. Zu nennen ist insbesondere eine (angesichts der genannten Pluralisierung zunächst überraschende) Tendenz zur Vereinheitlichung nicht nur der materiellen Kultur innerhalb des globalisierten Imperium Romanum, sondern auch des intellektuellen Diskurses. Diese geht in paradoxer, mit modernen Erfahrungen jedoch durchaus übereinstimmender Weise Hand in Hand mit einer zunehmenden Ausdifferenzierung und Vervielfachung der philosophisch-religiösen Lebensformen und Heilslehren, zu denen das an die hellenistisch-jüdische Tradition anschließende Christentum neu hinzukommt. Die in diesem Band vereinigten Beiträge renommierter Spezialisten aus aller Welt untersuchen die verschiedenen Facetten dieser Entwicklung. – Angesichts der Bedeutung der Epoche für die Ausbildung der abendländischen Identität dürfte der Band über den engeren Bereich der Altertumswissenschaften hinaus für ein weiteres Publikum von Interesse sein.

    What is art's relationship to play? Those interested in this question tend to look to modern philosophy for answers, but, as this book shows, the question was already debated in antiquity by luminaries like Plato and Aristotle. Over the course of eight chapters, this book contextualizes those debates, and demonstrates their significance for theoretical problems today. Topics include the ancient child psychology at the root of the ancient Greek word for 'play' (paidia), the numerous toys that have survived from antiquity, and the meaning of play's conceptual opposite, the 'serious' (spoudaios). What emerges is a concept of play markedly different from the one we have inherited from modernity. Play is not a certain set of activities which unleashes a certain feeling of pleasure; it is rather a certain feeling of pleasure that unleashes the activities we think of as 'play'. As such, it offers a new set of theoretical challenges.

    John Buridan (d. 1361) was one of the most talented and influential philosophers of the late Middle Ages. His fame extended far into the seventeenth century and underwent a revival in the twentieth century, when the French physicist Pierre Duhem rediscovered his manuscripts and wrote studies about them. So far, very few of Buridan's works have been edited. Two different questions commentaries on Aristotle's De generatione et corruptione by Buridan have been preserved. They originated in his classroom. Neither of them has ever been edited. This book presents a critical edition of the question commentary that survived in the greater number of manuscripts, and which was particularly popular at Central European universities.

    Aristotle argued that in theory one could acquire knowledge of the natural world. But he did not stop there; he put his theories into practice. This volume of new essays shows how Aristotle's natural science and philosophical theories shed light on one another. The contributors engage with both biological and non-biological scientific works and with a wide variety of theoretical works, including Physics, Generation and Corruption, On the Soul, and Posterior Analytics. The essays focus on a number of themes, including the sort of explanation provided by matter; the relationship between matter, teleology, and necessity; cosmic teleology; how an organism's soul and faculties relate to its end; how to define things such as sleep, void, and soul; and the proper way to make scientific judgments. The resulting volume offers a rich and integrated view of Aristotle's science and shows how it fits with his larger philosophical theories.

    This collection of essays by leading Aristotle scholars worldwide covers a wide range of topics on Aristotle's work from metaphysics, politics, ethics, bioethics, rhetoric, dialectic, aesthetics, history to physics, psychology, biology, medicine, technology. The thorough exploration of the issues investigated deepens our knowledge of the most fundamental concepts, which are crucial for an overall understanding of Aristotle’s work. Moreover, the contributors explore the relevance of Aristotle’s ideas to contemporary issues and provide new perspectives on the study of Aristotle’s thought. The essays of the volume were presented at the plenary sessions of the World Congress "Aristotle 2400 Years," organized by the Interdisciplinary Centre for Aristotle Studies of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, on May 23-28 2016, in commemoration of the 2400th anniversary of Aristotle’s birth. The aim of the congress was to advance scholarship on all aspects of Aristotle’s work, both in philosophy and in the fundamental disciplines of science. The impressive number of 250 papers from 40 countries highlighted the fact that Aristotle’s work continues to exercise an influence on our intellectual lives on a global scale.

    Die Pluralisierung des Philosophiebegriffs gehört zu den Charakteristika der ersten Jahrhunderte nach Christus – einer mit tiefgreifenden Veränderungen verbundenen Epoche, die sich allgemein in faszinierender Weise mit unserer Gegenwart berührt. Zu nennen ist insbesondere eine (angesichts der genannten Pluralisierung zunächst überraschende) Tendenz zur Vereinheitlichung nicht nur der materiellen Kultur innerhalb des globalisierten Imperium Romanum, sondern auch des intellektuellen Diskurses. Diese geht in paradoxer, mit modernen Erfahrungen jedoch durchaus übereinstimmender Weise Hand in Hand mit einer zunehmenden Ausdifferenzierung und Vervielfachung der philosophisch-religiösen Lebensformen und Heilslehren, zu denen das an die hellenistisch-jüdische Tradition anschließende Christentum neu hinzukommt. Die in diesem Band vereinigten Beiträge renommierter Spezialisten aus aller Welt untersuchen die verschiedenen Facetten dieser Entwicklung. – Angesichts der Bedeutung der Epoche für die Ausbildung der abendländischen Identität dürfte der Band über den engeren Bereich der Altertumswissenschaften hinaus für ein weiteres Publikum von Interesse sein.

    Aristotle argued that in theory one could acquire knowledge of the natural world. But he did not stop there; he put his theories into practice. This volume of new essays shows how Aristotle's natural science and philosophical theories shed light on one another. The contributors engage with both biological and non-biological scientific works and with a wide variety of theoretical works, including Physics, Generation and Corruption, On the Soul, and Posterior Analytics. The essays focus on a number of themes, including the sort of explanation provided by matter; the relationship between matter, teleology, and necessity; cosmic teleology; how an organism's soul and faculties relate to its end; how to define things such as sleep, void, and soul; and the proper way to make scientific judgments. The resulting volume offers a rich and integrated view of Aristotle's science and shows how it fits with his larger philosophical theories.
