    "Writing guides teach us to avoid mixed metaphors like 'that wet blanket is a loose cannon', and suggest that we should limit ourselves to one metaphor per paragraph. But clearly this is terrible advice. The 'Tomorrow, tomorrow, and tomorrow' speech in Macbeth packs six metaphors into a few lines, and is considered a literary masterpiece. Scientific descriptions of light and matter necessarily include conflicting metaphors because we don't have a perfect metaphor for these concepts. Whilst it's true that mixed metaphors can sound ignorant or confusing, what we really need is a more nuanced definition of mixed metaphors, and a better system for identifying their benefits and drawbacks in different contexts. In Mixed Metaphors: Their Use and Abuse, Karen Sullivan employs findings from linguistics and cognitive science to explore why some mixed metaphors are criticised but similar metaphors are praised. By using Conceptual Metaphor Theory, she demonstrates how, once we understand how metaphoric ideas are put together, we can better appreciate the different ways that metaphors can be mixed, and how audiences are likely to respond to these differences. By analysing over 100 metaphors from politicians, sportspeople, writers, and other public figures, Mixed Metaphors: Their Use and Abuse delineates how mixing occurs and identifies the characteristics that make mixed metaphors annoying, amusing or astounding" --

Herausfordernd sind zugleich die vieldeutigen Strukturen in global entgrenzter Kultur, sozialen Ordnungen und Identitätsvorstellungen. Demgegenüber sind weltweit reaktionäre und antidemokratische Schließungsbewegungen zu beobachten, die dieser Vagheit mit binären Vorstellungen von scheinbar klarer Eindeutigkeit begegnen. Ambiguität auszuhalten und zu gestalten ist darum umso mehr künstlerische wie politische Bildungsaufgabe! Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes aus Kunst, Pädagogik, Politik- und Kulturwissenschaft diskutieren, inwiefern Ambiguitäten in Kunst und Politik strukturähnlich sind und eine pädagogische Auseinandersetzung mit Kunst zugleich demokratische Haltungen bilden kann Biographical note: Ansgar Schnurr (Prof. Dr. phil.), geb. 1977, forscht und lehrt als Professor für Kunstpädagogik an der Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen im Bereich transkultureller Kunstpädagogik, Studien zur ästhetischen Dimension von Diversität und Ungleichheit sowie Schnittstellen und Transferwirkungen zur politischen Bildung. Sabine Dengel (Dr. phil.), geb. 1967, ist wissenschaftliche Referentin für politische und kulturelle Bildung bei der Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung und Leiterin der Projektgruppe »Politische Bildung und Kultur«. Sie hat Politikwissenschaft, Soziologie, Sozialpsychologie und Philosophie an der Universität des Saarlandes studiert und über politische Erziehung im Deutschen Kaiserreich, dem NS-Staat und der DDR promoviert. Ihre inhaltlichen Schwerpunkte liegen in der modernen politischen Theorie, der Theorie politischer und kultureller Bildung, der (historischen) Bildungsforschung sowie der Demokratietheorie. Julia Hagenberg, geb. 1967, Kunsthistorikerin und Pädagogin, leitet die Abteilung Bildung in der Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf. Die Schwerpunkte ihrer Arbeit und Lehrtätigkeit liegen an der Schnittstelle zwischen Kunstvermittlung und kuratorischer Praxis sowie im Bereich partizipativer Bildungskonzepte und der gesellschaftspolitischen Dimension von Museumsarbeit. Linda Kelch, geb. 1988, hat Politikwissenschaft und Philosophie studiert und ist wissenschaftliche Referentin bei der Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung (bpb) und arbeitet dort in der Projektgruppe »Politische Bildung und Kultur« zur Schnittstelle von kultureller und politischer Bildung sowie zu Phänomenen der Kulturalisierung und Konzepten der transkulturellen Bildung

    Ever since it was first published in 1930, William Empson's Seven Types of Ambiguity has been perceived as a milestone in literary criticism-far from being an impediment to communication, ambiguity now seemed an index of poetic richness and expressive power. Little, however, has been written on the broader trajectory of Western thought about ambiguity before Empson; as a result, the nature of his innovation has been poorly understood.A History of Ambiguity remedies this omission. Starting with classical grammar and rhetoric, and moving on to moral theology, law, biblical exegesis, German philosophy, and literary criticism, Anthony Ossa-Richardson explores the many ways in which readers and theorists posited, denied, conceptualised, and argued over the existence of multiple meanings in texts between antiquity and the twentieth century. This process took on a variety of interconnected forms, from the Renaissance delight in the 'elegance' of ambiguities in Horace, through the extraordinary Catholic claim that Scripture could contain multiple literal-and not just allegorical-senses, to the theory of dramatic irony developed in the nineteenth century, a theory intertwined with discoveries of the double meanings in Greek tragedy. Such narratives are not merely of antiquarian interest: rather, they provide an insight into the foundations of modern criticism, revealing deep resonances between acts of interpretation in disparate eras and contexts. A History of Ambiguity lays bare the long tradition of efforts to liberate language, and even a poet's intention, from the strictures of a single meaning

    Drawing largely on the etymological meaning of the word 'confusion' as the action of mixing or blending, John C. O'Neal traces the development of a progressive poetics of confusion in the French Enlightenment. This project, he claims, aimed to reject dogmatic thinking in all of its forms and to recognize the need to embrace complexity. Eighteenth-century thinkers used the notion of confusion in a progressive way to reorganize social classes, literary forms, metaphysical substances, scientific methods, and cultural categories such as taste and gender.     Charlotte Brontë’s final novel Villette (1853) is associated with ambiguity because of its open ending: Does M. Paul return to narrator-protagonist Lucy Snowe or is he killed in a storm raging on the Atlantic? Taking its famous ending as a starting point, this study explores Villette as a text in which ambiguity is all-pervasive in various ways. Among these is the narrator’s ambivalent attitude toward herself and others, epitomised in her stylistic idiosyncrasies. The links between ambiguity and doubt are explored through an analysis of Lucy’s signature phrase, “I know not,” expressive of her existential doubts and questioning attitude toward the world. The analysis moreover focuses on the motif of the oracle as a traditionally ambiguous utterance, and explores its relevance in the context of the generic tradition of Villette as a fictional autobiography. Another focus is the interplay of figurative and literal levels of meaning in the allegorical episodes, creating ambiguity. Little, however, has been written on the broader trajectory of Western thought about ambiguity before Empson; as a result, the nature of his innovation has been poorly understood. A History of Ambiguity remedies this omission.     The random Incentive System (RIS) is a standard method to incentivize participants in economic experiments. However, recent theoretical studies point out the possibility of its failure under ambiguity. We propose a modification of RIS, named independent RIS (I-RIS), to improve its reliability. We conducted an experiment to evaluate the performances of the standard RIS and I-RIS in direct and indirect manners. Whereas a nonnegligible fraction of participants are not consistent with the reversal-of-order axiom, a majority of ambiguity averse and seeking participants are. This implies that participants with nonneutral ambiguity attitudes may not report truthful preferences when RIS is used. However, randomization attitudes do not explain inconsistent choices under RIS. In addition, we did not find significant differences in performance between RIS and I-RIS. These results suggest that preferences for randomization, which is driven by nonneutral ambiguity attitudes, do not cause the failure of RIS.

    In Anknüpfung an die Theorie des "Othering" wird der Versuch unternommen, die Logik des Antisemitismus mit einem Verständnis der Andersheit des "Semitischen" zu kontrastieren. Dabei werden zunächst die Unterschiede zwischen einer Begründungslogik und einer Funktionslogik erläutert. Anhand zweier Beispiele (Nirenberg, Salzborn) wird gezeigt, wie unterschiedlich Deutungen des Antisemitismus in Geschichte kontextualisiert werden können. Darauf aufbauend wird die Unterscheidung von passivem und aktivem Othering entwickelt. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird dann nach den Bedingungen der Möglichkeit von Konturen des "Semitischen" gefragt. Following the theory of "othering", this contribution aims to contrast the logic of anti-Semitism with an understanding of the otherness of the "Semitic". First, I explain the differences between a logic of justification and a logic of function. I employ two examples (Nirenberg, Salzborn) to show how different interpretations of anti-Semitism can be historically contextualized. Building on this, the distinction between passive and active othering is developed. Finally, after taking this into consideration, I inquire into the conditions of the possibility of the emergence of contours of the "Semitic".

    "Writing guides teach us to avoid mixed metaphors like 'that wet blanket is a loose cannon', and suggest that we should limit ourselves to one metaphor per paragraph. But clearly this is terrible advice. The 'Tomorrow, tomorrow, and tomorrow' speech in Macbeth packs six metaphors into a few lines, and is considered a literary masterpiece. Scientific descriptions of light and matter necessarily include conflicting metaphors because we don't have a perfect metaphor for these concepts. Whilst it's true that mixed metaphors can sound ignorant or confusing, what we really need is a more nuanced definition of mixed metaphors, and a better system for identifying their benefits and drawbacks in different contexts. In Mixed Metaphors: Their Use and Abuse, Karen Sullivan employs findings from linguistics and cognitive science to explore why some mixed metaphors are criticised but similar metaphors are praised. By using Conceptual Metaphor Theory, she demonstrates how, once we understand how metaphoric ideas are put together, we can better appreciate the different ways that metaphors can be mixed, and how audiences are likely to respond to these differences. By analysing over 100 metaphors from politicians, sportspeople, writers, and other public figures, Mixed Metaphors: Their Use and Abuse delineates how mixing occurs and identifies the characteristics that make mixed metaphors annoying, amusing or astounding"
