    Ants, ghosts, cultures, thunderstorms, stock markets, robots, computers: this is just a partial list of the sentient things that have filled American literature over the last century. From modernism forward, writers have given life and voice to both the human and the nonhuman, and in the process addressed the motives, behaviors, and historical pressures that define lives—or things—both everyday and extraordinary.In Worldly Acts and Sentient Things Robert Chodat exposes a major shortcoming in recent accounts of twentieth-century discourse. What is often seen as the "death" of agency is better described as the displacement of agency onto new and varied entities. Writers as diverse as Gertrude Stein, Saul Bellow, Ralph Ellison, and Don DeLillo are preoccupied with a cluster of related questions. Which entities are capable of believing something, saying something, desiring, hoping, hating, or doing? Which things, in turn, do we treat as worthy of our care, respect, and worship?Drawing on a philosophical tradition exemplified by Ludwig Wittgenstein and Wilfrid Sellars, Chodat shows that the death of the Cartesian ego need not entail the elimination of purposeful action altogether. Agents do not dissolve or die away in modern thought and literature; they proliferate—some in human forms, some not. Chodat distinguishes two ideas of agency in particular. One locates purposes in embodied beings, "persons," the other in disembodied entities, "presences." Worldly Acts and Sentient Things is a an engaging blend of philosophy and literary theory for anyone interested in modern and contemporary literature, narrative studies, psychology, ethics, and cognitive science

    Abstract: Die Dissertation befasst sich mit der Konstruktion von Agency beim mündlichen Erzählen am Beispiel des Spanischen, wobei Agency als die subjektive Erfahrung von Handlungsmacht verstanden wird, die beim Erzählen sprachlich kodiert wird. Auf eine theoretische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Agency-Begriff in Bereichen der Soziologie, der Kognitionspsychologie und der Sprachwissenschaft folgt eine qualitative Analyse von Ausschnitten aus narrativen Interviews mit Kubaner_innen aus den Jahren 2015 und 2016 bezüglich relevanter Konstruktionen auf Äußerungsebene sowie sprachlich-narrativer Darstellungen auf Erzählebene. Ausgehend von dem gesprächsanalytischen Agency-Textanalysemodell in Lucius-Hoene 2012 wurde dazu ein Analyseinventar kreiert, das folgende Elemente umfasst: die Definition von Agency in der Strukturationstheorie als Möglichkeit, aus mindestens zwei Handlungsalternativen eine auszuwählen (Giddens 1984, u.a.), die drei Agency-Modi ‚individual‘, ‚collective‘ und ‚proxy‘ in der sozialen Kognitionstheorie (Bandura 2001, u.a.) sowie die Unterscheidung der zeitlichen Handlungsorientierungen ‚iteration‘, ‚practical evaluation‘ und ‚projectivity‘ in der Chordal-Triad-Theorie (Emirbayer und Mische 1998).
    Die Arbeit konnte die Komplexität und Vielfalt der Agency-Kodierung bei mündlichen Erzählen aufzeigen. Dabei wurde in Bezug auf Agency-Reduktion eine gewisse Systematik festgestellt: Sprecher_innen scheinen bei der Behandlung in einem kubanischen Kontext als heikel einzustufender Themen häufig auf diskursive Ressourcen zurückzugreifen, mit denen sie die Präsenz bestimmter Akteure der erzählten Welt sprachlich reduzieren, so etwa auf die unpersönliche Konstruktion der dritten Person Plural sowie auf den generischen sowie unbestimmten Gebrauch bestimmter grammatischer Personen. Bezüglich des postulierten Analyseinventar erwiesen sich in erster Linie die drei Agency-Modi nach Bandura (2001, u.a.) als äußerst nützliche Beschreibungskategorien, dabei besonders der in der Forschung bisher vernachlässigte Modus der Proxy-Agency. Schließlich liefert die Arbeit einen Beitrag zur aktuellen Kubaforschung, indem sie wertvolle Einblicke in die Erfahrungswelt von Kubaner_innen in einer Zeit des wirtschaftlichen und gesellschaftlichen Umbruchs liefert. Obwohl die Dissertation ein primär sprachwissenschaftliches Erkenntnisinteresse verfolgt, kann die postulierte Vorgehensweise bei der Agency-Analyse auch Forschungsarbeiten aus anderen wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen dienlich sein, die sich auf der Grundlage qualitativer Daten mit Agency befassen

    Ants, ghosts, cultures, thunderstorms, stock markets, robots, computers: this is just a partial list of the sentient things that have filled American literature over the last century. From modernism forward, writers have given life and voice to both the human and the nonhuman, and in the process addressed the motives, behaviors, and historical pressures that define lives—or things—both everyday and extraordinary.In Worldly Acts and Sentient Things Robert Chodat exposes a major shortcoming in recent accounts of twentieth-century discourse. What is often seen as the "death" of agency is better described as the displacement of agency onto new and varied entities. Writers as diverse as Gertrude Stein, Saul Bellow, Ralph Ellison, and Don DeLillo are preoccupied with a cluster of related questions. Which entities are capable of believing something, saying something, desiring, hoping, hating, or doing? Which things, in turn, do we treat as worthy of our care, respect, and worship?Drawing on a philosophical tradition exemplified by Ludwig Wittgenstein and Wilfrid Sellars, Chodat shows that the death of the Cartesian ego need not entail the elimination of purposeful action altogether. Agents do not dissolve or die away in modern thought and literature; they proliferate—some in human forms, some not. Chodat distinguishes two ideas of agency in particular. One locates purposes in embodied beings, "persons," the other in disembodied entities, "presences." Worldly Acts and Sentient Things is a an engaging blend of philosophy and literary theory for anyone interested in modern and contemporary literature, narrative studies, psychology, ethics, and cognitive science
