    Too many Christians are afraid of beauty. This fear disconnects these Christians from their larger culture, a culture that is increasingly visual, increasingly aware of the presence and power of images, and more commonly fascinated by the power of beauty and form. This historical-theological overview presents the thought of ten theologians and one philosopher in an attempt to give Christians helpful vocabulary concerning beauty and aesthetics. It is time to use beauty and aesthetics for the mission of Christ! And yet rather than simply parrot the larger post-Christian culture, Christians and churches need to employ beauty and aesthetics in a manner that echoes God's own revelation: creation and redemption through Jesus Christ. We need to develop a sensitivity that can perceive beauties ignored. We need theological framing that both respects the glory of God's handiwork and keeps it from becoming idolatrous. We need to live with wonder for the bounty that routinely surrounds us. In short, we need eyes to see. -- back cover

    The subject of "culture" has provided theologians with a whole new realm of exploration. By the turn of the twentieth century and the beginning of this new milennium the subject of culture had presented itself to theologians and church leaders for vital consideration. As one of the world's leading theologians, Robert Jenson's eminent career has coincided with the pre-eminence of culture in theological and churchly discussion. Having described himself as a theologian of culture in his earliest works, culture continually informs Jenson's systematic theology, which in turn works its way out in countless cultural forms. In Rhyming Hope and History we explore the philiosophical and theological influences of Jenson's work and outline their vast and varied applications to the world of culture and the life of the church. For Jenson, the church is the cultural embodiment of the risen Christ in the fallen reality of our world. In a series of conversations between Jenson and leading thinkers, including G.W.F.     "This book uncovers the theological aesthetics of Hans Urs von Balthasar (1905-1988), by sketching out a phenomenological approach to art and revelation, providing unexpected resources for a contemporary theology of art"-- The work of the influential Jesuit theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar (1905-1988) has become a common point of reference in discussing the relationship of theology and the arts. However, the full significance of his theological aesthetics for both the emerging field of theology and the arts, as well as for interdisciplinary conversation with contemporary art and theory, remains to be unfolded. This book explores the ways in which Balthasar's theo-aesthetics, when taken together with his theological dramatics and theo-logic, yield a theologically informed phenomenology of the work of art with rich implications for contemporary theologies of art. By investigating the nature and disclosure of beauty and being through art, Balthasar's theological re-reading of Heidegger, his theo-dramatic relation of all forms to Christ, and his phenomenology of truth, Balthasar's philosophical and theological insights into the nature of art are presented as a resource for a constructive theology of art which "springs" from the depths of his theological aesthetics.

    "This book provides the first comprehensive examination of Karl Barth's view of beauty. For over fifty years scholars have assumed Barth recovered traditional belief in God's beauty but refused to entertain any relationship between this and more familiar natural and artistic beauties. Hans Urs von Balthasar was the first to offer this interpretation and his conclusion has been echoed ever since, rendering Barth's view of beauty irrelevant to work in theological aesthetics. This volume continues the late twentieth century revision of Balthasar's interpretation of Barth by arguing that this too is a significant misunderstanding of his theology. Andrew Dunstan demonstrates that, through an encounter with fatalistic forms of Reformed theology, Brunner's charges that his dogmatics were irrelevant and medieval thought, Barth gradually developed an analogy of divine, ecclesial and worldly beauty with all the theological, christocentric and actualistic hallmarks of his previous forms of analogy. This not only yields valuable new insight into Barth's view of analogy but also provides a much needed foundation for a distinctively Protestant and post-Barthian approach to theological aesthetics"--

    Nachdem sich die Theologie jahrzehntelang an den empirischen Sozialwissenschaften orientierte, beobachtet man seit den 90er Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts eine Hinwendung zur Ästhetik. Kunst und ästhetische Erfahrung gewinnen für die Reflexion religiöser Erfahrung an Bedeutung. Die ästhetische Dimension des Glaubens wird wiederentdeckt.Die Autorin untersucht anhand verschiedener Entwürfe die systematisch-theologischen Grundvoraussetzungen einer solchen Bezugnahme und fragt nach Chancen, aber auch Grenzen einer Annäherung von Theologie und Ästhetik. Sie zeigt auf, dass sich die Notwendigkeit einer Bezugnahme von Theologie und Ästhetik aus der hermeneutischen Fragestellung nach Gestalt und Wahrnehmung des lebendigen Wortes Gottes ergibt. Als theologischer Ort einer Ästhetik wird die Fundamentaltheologie im Sinne einer Selbstreflexion über die Bedingungen theologischen Denkens bestimmt. Die wichtigste Einsicht auf dem Weg zur ästhetischen Dimension des Glaubens ist dabei, dass diese uns mit der Heiligen Schrift immer schon mitgegeben ist. Gottes Wahrnehmung des Menschen als Sünder und Gerechtfertigter ist damit das Kriterium aller menschlichen Wahrnehmungsvollzüge
