    Abstract: In this article, I consider writing by research participants as a method of gathering data on sensitive, difficult or shameful topics. In doing so, I draw on the example of a research project on family narratives and family secrets. Gathering data on hidden, uncomfortable or even painful aspects of a family's past and present poses several challenges in a research project: Most people are reluctant to volunteer intimate insights into their family lives and dynamics. Moreover, in an interview situation, it is challenging to create the kind of rapport that allows a deeper conversation. Writing has been used by a number of scholars from different disciplines to gather data. In the first section, I review these approaches, as well as their benefits and disadvantages. I then describe and reflect upon the methodological approach taken for a project on memories of family members' actions and involvement during the Nazi era in Germany.     Abstract: To challenge the commonly made assumption in cross-national survey projects that close translation yields more comparable data than adaptation, we implemented a translation experiment in the CROss-National Online Survey Panel. The English source questionnaire was split into three batches of 20 items each and was translated by three translation teams into Estonian and three teams into Slovene. The teams received specific instructions on how to translate each batch (either closely or adaptively) so that, by design, the teams translated two batches following one approach and one following the other approach. Respondents in the two countries (Estonia and Slovenia) were randomly assigned to three distinct questionnaire versions based on the same source questionnaire, each consisting of translations by all three teams and including close and adaptive translations.     Abstract: Sound questionnaire translation is crucial for collecting equivalent data in cross-national surveys. The topic is widely discussed in fields in which translated questionnaires are used, such as in the social sciences or in cross-cultural psychology, but hardly in translation studies. This article aims at bridging this gap by bringing the genre of questionnaires closer to translation scholars and practitioners. To begin with, we will provide a sketch of key characteristics of cross-national survey methodology, with a special focus on questionnaire translation. Next, the multi-dimensional concept of translation competence will be introduced. Along the ISO 17100 competence model then, we will list requirements, challenges, and resources for questionnaire translation and illustrate those with examples. The concluding paragraph will highlight areas for interdisciplinary research involving both translation studies and cross-national survey methodology

    Abstract: Der Beitrag untersucht in einer Längsschnittanalyse die Entwicklung der Ereignisse, die aus Gruppenbezogener Menschenfeindlichkeit (GMF) und Rechtsextremismus heraus motiviert sind. Grundlage hierfür ist die Dokumentation von chronik.LE, in der Gewalt- und Propaganda-Aktionen organisierter und nichtorganisierter Neonazis und rechter Akteur*innen sowie Vorfälle von Rassismus, Antisemitismus und Sexismus in der Stadt Leipzig und den Landkreisen Leipzig und Nordsachsen dokumentiert sind. Dabei werden drei Perspektiven herausgearbeitet: eine diachrone, eine inhaltliche und eine geografische. Die inhaltliche Auswertung wird mittels Topic Modeling umgesetzt. Dadurch werden verschiedene Akteur*innen, Veränderungen der Ausdrucksformen einzelner Diskriminierungsformen und der Aktionen rechter und rechtsextremer Akteur*innen sowie darauf aufbauend geografische Schwerpunkte aufgezeigt.     Abstract: Research on environmental justice comprises health and well-being aspects, as well as topics related to general social participation. In this research field, among others, there is a need for an integrated use of social science survey data and spatial science data, e.g. for combining demographic information from survey data with data on pollution from spatial data. However, for researchers it is challenging to link both data sources, because (1) the interdisciplinary nature of both data sources is different, (2) both underlie different legal restrictions, in particular regarding data privacy, and (3) methodological challenges arise regarding the use of geo-information systems (GIS) for the processing and analysis of spatial data.     Abstract: This paper examines code choices in the written linguistic landscape of the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI). Due to a history of language imposition, the Marshall Islanders have long been denied the opportunity to express their linguistic identity in the public domain. A recently proposed bilingual language policy, which requires all public signs to be Marshallese-English bilingual, aims to change this status quo. We map language choices in the linguistic landscape of the RMI at the cusp of this policy with an eye on the stakeholders, production processes, and audiences involved in the creation and reception of the linguistic landscape. State-of-the-art geographical and regression analyses model the factors that govern code choices in the linguistic landscape of the RMI. Our findings allow us to pinpoint niches - both geographical as well as social - where the Marshallese assert their linguistic identity in the public realm

    Abstract: Social support may be important in the perpetuation of symptoms in chronic low back pain (CLBP). The multidimensional scale of perceived social support (MSPSS) is one of the best measures of social support with applicability in Africa. The aims of this study were to translate, culturally adapt, test-retest, and assess cross-sectional psychometric properties of the Igbo-MSPSS. Methods: Forward and backward translation of the MSPSS was done by clinicians and non-clinician translators and evaluated by a specialist review committee. The adapted measure was piloted amongst twelve adults with CLBP in rural Nigeria. Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega coefficient were used for investigating internal consistency. Intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC: two-way random effects model, average of raters' measurements, absolute definition of agreement) reflecting both the degree of correlation and agreement between measurements was used for the statistical investigation of test-retest relia

    Abstract: Die Biografieforschung bezeichnet einen komplexen Forschungsansatz, der auf eine lange Geschichte des wissenschaftlichen Interesses an "persönlichen Dokumenten" verweisen kann. Sie ist eine voraussetzungsvolle Forschungsperspektive, die sich in zentralen Aspekten ihres Vorgehens auf Biografien als theoretisches Konzept, als historisch-empirischen Gegenstand und als komplexe methodologische Strategie bezieht. Andere Begriffe, welche oftmals synonym gebraucht, in der Biografieforschung aber systematisch unterschieden werden, sind "Lebensgeschichte" und "Lebenslauf". Die Autorin skizziert die Perspektiven einer rekonstruktiven Geschlechterforschung innerhalb der Biografieforschung, wozu sie auf die Differenzierungen empirischer Forschung, die methodologischen Prinzipien sowie auf Datenerhebung und Datenanalyse eingeht.     Abstract: Ziel des vorgestellten Forschungsprojekts ist es, Techniken des kognitiven Interviews zu entwickeln, die die Effektivität solcher Interviews in fremden Kulturkreisen erhöhen. Im Mittelpunkt stehen hier Interviews in spanischer Sprache. Die Verfasserin stellt zunächst Literatur zu Pretests bei mehrsprachigen Untersuchungsprojekten vor. Vor diesem Hintergrund werden Umrisse eines dreiphasigen explorativen Forschungsprojekts skizziert, das Schwierigkeiten bei der Durchführung kognitiver Interviews mit spanisch sprechenden Befragten sichtbar machen und alternative Methoden testen soll. Abschließend werden Praktiken des U.S. Census Bureau beim Pretest spanischer Erhebungsinstrumente (kognitive Fragen, Statusfragen, soziolinguistische Probleme) referiert. (ICE)

    Abstract: 'Mit der achten Auflage des Jahres 1998 wurde in der Einkommens- und Verbrauchsstichprobe (EVS) eine Reihe weitreichender inhaltlicher und methodischer Veränderungen realisiert. Die Quotierungsmerkmale wurden leicht verändert, ein neues Hochrechnungsverfahren eingesetzt, Erhebungsteile umstrukturiert, die Anschreibephase in den Haushaltsbüchern wurde verkürzt, der Merkmalskatalog wurde überarbeitet und ein neues, international vergleichbares, Klassifikationsschema implementiert. Die Diskussion dieser Modifikationen und die Beurteilung ihrer Konsequenzen für die Datenqualität und die Vergleichbarkeit mit früheren Einkommens- und Verbrauchsstichproben sind Gegenstand dieses Arbeitsberichts.     Abstract: Nach Auffassung des Verfassers kann die Inhaltsanalyse einen Beitrag zur qualitativen psychologischen Forschung leisten. Die Inhaltsanalyse-live Methode, in der vom Material (Text) auf soziale Realität geschlossen wird - hat mit dem Niedergang des Behaviourismus in den Sozialwissenschaften an Bedeutung gewonnen. In der psychologischen Forschung führte sie eher ein Schattendasein, ihre Beschränkung auf eine rein qualitative Analyse scheint in eine Sackgasse geraten zu sein. Drei Grundtechniken einer qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse werden beschrieben - Zusammenfassung, Kontextanalyse, Strukturierung - und anhand von Ablaufmodellen erläutert.     Abstract: This field report presents and discusses methodological issues and challenges encountered in a mixed-methods research project on asylum seekers in Bavaria, Germany. It documents the research design of, and field experiences in, a quantitative survey based on a quota sampling procedure and a qualitative study, both of which were conducted in collective accommodation for asylum seekers at selected locations in that federal state. Standardized PAPI multiple-topic questionnaires were completed by asylum seekers from Syria, Afghanistan, Eritrea, and Iraq (N = 779); most of the questionnaires were self-administered. In addition, 12 qualitative face-to-face biographical interviews were conducted in order to gain an indepth understanding of attitudes and experiences of asylum seekers.     Abstract: In this report we consider methodological challenges that arise in intercultural comparative research projects due to linguistic diversity and culture-specific connotations. Solutions for the collection, preparation, and evaluation of data in multilingual settings were developed based on a content-structuring qualitative content analysis of multilingual interview transcripts. Collaboration with interpreters and co-interviewers is crucial for conducting interviews in the mother tongue of the interviewees. This collaborative process is described and a possible procedure for the transcription, translation, and analysis of foreign language data is outlined. In addition to the intercultural competence and cultural knowledge of the researchers, their exchange with experts prior to data collection and with translators during data preparation and evaluation plays an important role

Neben zahlreichen neuen Forschungsfragen, die es zu beantworten gilt, fordert die Digitalisierung die Organisation von Forschung und den Umgang mit Daten heraus.     Abstract: Vor dem Hintergrund der Auseinandersetzung mit Christa Wolffs 'Kindheitsmuster' untersucht der Verfasser den geschichtswissenschaftlichen Wert von autobiographischen Erinnerungen. Er betont, dass das Bedürfnis nach Erzählen bei einer wachsenden Zahl älterer Menschen ausgesprochen groß ist, und plädiert für eine Aufwertung dieser Quelle in der wissenschaftlichen Forschung. Er argumentiert, dass auch die Entwicklungen seit dem Ende der 1980er Jahre aus dieser Sicht intensiver untersucht werden sollen, und zeigt, dass es an der Zeit ist, dies von Betroffenen, die ihr biographische Gepäck mit aktuellen gesellschaftlichen Situationen und auch wissenschaftlichen Diskursen kompatibel machen müssen, nicht nur einfach phrasenhaft und moralisch einzufordern, sondern konkrete Angebote für 'Erinnerungswerkstätten' mit zu kreieren.     Abstract: Many researchers consider it a best practice to include respondent pretesting as part of the survey translation process (Survey Research Center, 2016). The U.S. Census Bureau has a Pretesting Standard that delineates requirements to ensure that any data collection instrument "works," by verifying that it can be administered as intended by interviewers and understood and responded to appropriately by respondents (U.S. Census Bureau, 2015). Expert review is included in the standard but it is described as a sort of evaluation method of last resort due to its lack of inclusion of respondent pretesting in the process. In large survey organizations, there can be a variety of types of materials in need of translation ranging from actual survey questionnaires to other support materials. Due to resource limitations, expert review is a method that often comes into play in the absence of resources for respondent testing.     Abstract: The IAB-BAMF-SOEP Survey of Refugees is one of the first large-scale quantitative surveys in Germany focusing on refugees exclusively. It is able to provide valuable insights on the recent cohort of refugees who arrived in Germany as of the year 2013. However, due to the fact that most respondents of the target population are not proficient in German, the research partners who conducted the survey faced several obstacles. One crucial aspect in this regard was the written and audio translation of field instruments. Therefore, this paper gives some insights into the translation and fielding procedures and presents numbers on the use of written and audio translations in the IAB-BAMF-SOEP Survey of Refugees. We found that especially a written translation was very helpful, but also the audio files proved to facilitate participation in the survey. However, due to the fact that those tools are new and innovative, further research on their effects on survey quality needs to be carried out

    Abstract: Survey researchers are often confronted with the question of how long to set the length of the field period. Longer fielding time might lead to greater participation yet requires survey managers to devote more of their time to data collection efforts. With the aim of facilitating the decision about the length of the field period, we investigated whether a longer fielding time reduces the risk of nonresponse bias to judge whether field periods can be ended earlier without endangering the performance of the survey. By using data from six waves of a probability-based mixed-mode (online and mail) panel of the German population, we analyzed whether the risk of nonresponse bias decreases over the field period by investigating how day-by-day coefficients of variation develop during the field period.
