"An art historian and a Germanist examine the pictures and text in the four densely illustrated manuscripts of the Sachsenspiegel that were produced in the century following its composition by Eike von Repgow. This is the first extensive study of these famous picture books in English. Using critical frameworks based on performative and feminist theory, the authors give detailed consideration to the social differences reshaped and maintained by text and image. Eike's project, realized in the early 1220s, was concerned with Christianizing secular law, and promoted peaceful interaction between diverse groups, including Saxon men and women, Jews, and Slavic Wends, and he mandated the provision of guardians for the young, the handicapped and the judicially impaired. Yet the later images variously support or subvert his text; changing emphases in the pictures accord with changing attitudes to women and Jews in the period of productionof these works, between c. 1300 and 1365. A burgeoning book culture in the fourteenth century carried Eike's law into the town halls at a time when market churches were being constructed in the judicial and economic hub of German cities, even as synagogues disappeared from town centres during the pogroms. This market complex became part of the material culture of the law. A final chapter traces the popularity and dissemination of the Sachsenspiegel picture-books up to 2010."--(Provided by publisher.)

Zusammenfassung: "Art = New Vision. This formula shaped the avant-garde. With moving images abruptly expanding the boundaries of the visible world, new printing techniques triggering a pictorial turn in graphic art, and literature becoming almost inseparable from visual media we still regard the avant-garde as heyday for modernisms obsession with the eye. But what are the blind spots of this optocentrism? Focusing on the gestures of giving, touching, showing and handcrafting, this study examines key scenes of tactile interaction between subject and artifact. Hand movements, manual maneuvers and manipulations challenge optics and expose the crises of a visually dominated perspective on the arts. The readings of this book call for a revision of an optically obscured aesthetics and poetics to include haptic experience as an often overlooked but pivotal part of the making as well as the perception of literature and the arts"--(Provided by publisher.)

Zusammenfassung: "PRINTED PHOTOGRAPHY IN VENEZUELA provides a comprehensive inventory of photographically illustrated books published in Venezuela from 1945 to 2017. The research attempts to trace the history of the illustrated book with photographs examining the relationship between photography, literature, graphic design and editing; that is the coexistence of these disciplines in books ... this publication seeks to clarify the directionality of meaning proposed in illustrated books with photography, coffee table books, magazines, brochures, catalogues, posters and photobooks. With this purpose, the book explores subjects through of political, social, artistic ideologies, and also ideas of nation embodied in the corporate or authorial initiatives that shaped them. PRINTED PHOTOGRAPHY IN VENEZUELA presents in short, a transversal and multiple reading that points to the assessment of the work as a whole and to make visible and make the book tangible."--Author's website

Franz Mehring : literary practice as a socialist form -- Political spontaneism and cultural practice -- Märten and the development of a theoretical position : from reformism to the November Revolution -- The 'German October' and reconfiguration -- Wittfogel's critique of Thalheimer's introduction. Zusammenfassung: "The German Left and Aesthetic Politics examines the articulation of contending materialist aesthetic practices within the ideological fractures of the German Left between the Second and Third International. It is hinged on the major literary critical contributions of Franz Mehring, representative of the Second, and Karl Wittfogel and Georg Lukacs representing the Third. Both parties focussed on the bourgeois revolutionary cultural heritage and how it might provide examples for emulation. However, post the 1918 November Revolution a radical politically avant-garde challenged that tradition, and through figures like the Berlin Dadaists, Piscator's proletarian theatre and later Brecht, with contributions from dissident Marxist intellectuals, like Karl Korsch and Fritz Sternberg, asked other questions and proposed other answers. Revisiting the contexts and contents of these exchanges allows one to understand the serious role allocated to the cultural in constructing the 'third pillar of socialism', its integrative dimension"--(Provided by publisher.)

Zusammenfassung: Polemic and Literature Surrounding the French Wars of Religion demonstrates that literature and polemic interacted constantly in sixteenth-century France, constructing ideological frameworks that defined the various groups to which individuals belonged and through which they defined their identities. Contributions explore both literary texts (prose, poetry, and theater) and more intentionally polemical texts that fall outside of the traditional literary genres. Engaging the continuous casting and recasting of opposing worldviews, this collection of essays examines literature's use of polemic and polemic's use of literature as seminal intellectual developments stemming from the religious and social turmoil that characterized this period in France.

A tout le moins ne cesse-t-elle de relégitimer cette curiosité initiale : quelle est au juste la visée de l'interprétation ? Bref, quels sont exactement les enjeux de l'herméneutique ?"--Page 4 de la couverture.

Zusammenfassung: Literary scholars have explained the rise of the Anglophone novel using a range of tools, from Ian Watt's theories to James Watt's inventions. Contrary to established narratives, When Novels Were Books reveals that the genre beloved of so many readers today was not born secular, national, middle-class, or female. For the first three centuries of their history, novels came into readers' hands primarily as printed sheets ordered into a codex bound along one edge between boards or paper wrappers. Consequently, they shared some formal features of other codices, such as almanacs and Protestant religious books produced by the same printers. Novels are often mistakenly credited for developing a formal feature ("character") that was in fact incubated in religious books. The novel did not emerge all at once: it had to differentiate itself from the goods with which it was in competition. Though it was written for sequential reading, the early novel's main technology for dissemination was the codex, a platform designed for random access. This peculiar circumstance led to the genre's insistence on continuous, cover-to-cover reading even as the "media platform" it used encouraged readers to dip in and out at will and read discontinuously. Jordan Alexander Stein traces this tangled history, showing how the physical format of the book shaped the stories that were fit to print.--(Provided by publisher.)

In this first monograph on E. T. A. Hoffmann and opera, Francien Markx examines Hoffmann's writings on opera and the challenges they pose to established narratives of aesthetic autonomy, the search for a national opera, and Hoffmann's biography. Markx discusses Hoffmann's lifelong fascination with opera against the backdrop of eighteenth-century theater reform, the creation of national identity, contemporary performance practices and musical and aesthetic discourses as voiced by C. M. von Weber, A. W. Schlegel, Heine, and Wagner, among others. The book reconsiders the traditional view that German opera followed a deterministic trajectory toward Wagner's 'Gesamtkunstwerk' and reveals a cosmopolitan spirit in Hoffmann's operatic vision, most notably exemplified by his controversial advocacy for Spontini in Berlin.
