    In den letzten Jahren gab es in Deutschland Fortschritte bei der Bildungsgerechtigkeit. In jüngster Zeit wird jedoch deutlich, dass der Zusammenhang zwischen sozioökonomischer Herkunft und Bildungserfolg wieder größer wird. Dies kann auch auf die starke Zuwanderung zurückgeführt werden. Die Bildungschancen der Kinder werden in erheblichem Maße von den Eltern mitbestimmt. In vielen Ländern haben vor allem Eltern mit akademischem Bildungshintergrund in den letzten Jahren ihre materiellen und immateriellen Investitionen erhöht, um ihren Kindern gute Startmöglichkeiten zu verschaffen. Um die daraus resultierenden ungleichen Startchancen anzugleichen, kommt der frühkindlichen Förderung und der Schulbildung eine hohe Bedeutung zu. In diesen Bereichen sind jedoch weitere qualitative und quantitative Verbesserungen vorzunehmen, um die Bildungschancen aller Kinder deutlich zu erhöhen. Eine aktuelle Herausforderung hat ebenfalls starke Auswirkungen auf die Bildungsgerechtigkeit: die Corona-Krise. Wenn uneingeschränkter Präsenzunterricht an den Schulen und eine Förderung der Kinder in den Tageseinrichtungen nicht möglich ist, dann gewinnen die unterschiedlichen Möglichkeiten der Eltern, ihre Kinder zu unterstützen, noch einmal an Bedeutung. Das wiederum könnte die Ungleichheit der Bildungschancen abermals verschärfen. Germany has been making good progress towards achieving equality of opportunity in its education system. Latterly, however, it has become clear that the correlation between socio-economic background and educational success is again becoming more pronounced, a phenomenon which can be partly attributed to the high level of immigration in recent years. Children's chances of educational success are to a large extent determined by their parents. In many countries, some parents, and particularly those with a university degree, have recently increased their material and immaterial investments in the start of their children's educational career. Early childhood support and school education are the means best suited to levelling the playing field again. However, if children's educational opportunities are to be significantly enhanced, further qualitative and quantitative improvements need to be made in both areas. A new challenge is having an additional adverse impact on equality of opportunity in education: the corona crisis. Where face-to-face lessons in schools and support for children in day-care facilities are no longer possible or are restricted, the different ways in which parents can support their children take on even greater significance. This, in turn, could again exacerbate the inequality of educational opportunity that many children face.

    Benjamin W. Arold prepared this study while he was working at the Center for Economics of Education at the ifo Institute. The study was completed in March 2022 and accepted as doctoral thesis by the Department of Economics at the LMU Munich. It consists of four distinct empirical essays that address various aspects of how school curricula affect students in the classroom and beyond. Chapter 2 demonstrates that the abolishment of compulsory religious education in Germany does not only affect religiosity and gender role attitudes, but also affects the high-stakes choices of getting married, having children and participating in the labor market. Chapter 3 provides evidence that the content of science education standards in the US does not only affect related knowledge of students and adulthood attitudes, but also translates into high-stakes occupational choices. Chapter 4 exemplifies that school curricula reforms can also have unintended consequences by showing that a reform of education standards in math and English has negative spillovers on student achievement in science. Finally, Chapter 5 highlights the fundamental role teachers, the transmitters of educational content in school, play in the formation of human capital even in dimensions generally thought of as genetically determined.

    This dissertation consists of four distinct empirical essays that address various aspects of the economics of education. Chapters 2 and 3 show that patience and risk-taking as intertemporal preferences are closely related to differences in student achievement across and within countries. Chapter 3 hereby employs novel machine-learning methods to derive intertemporal preference measures from Facebook data. Using a field experiment among university students, chapter 4 shows that the ordering in which positive and negative performance feedback is provided, matters for study motivation and to some extent also exam performance. Finally, chapter 5 presents new insights to gender gaps in adult cognitive skills, showing that they are highly related to wages, especially at the top of the wage distribution. Diese Dissertation besteht aus vier eigenständigen empirischen Aufsätzen, die verschiedene Aspekte der Bildungsökonomie behandeln. In den Kapiteln 2 und 3 wird gezeigt, dass Geduld und Risikobereitschaft als intertemporale Präferenzen in engem Zusammenhang mit Unterschieden in den Schülerleistungen zwischen und innerhalb von Ländern stehen. In Kapitel 3 werden neue Methoden des maschinellen Lernens eingesetzt, um intertemporale Präferenzmaße aus Facebook-Daten abzuleiten. Anhand eines Feldexperiments unter Universitätsstudierenden zeigt Kapitel 4, dass die Reihenfolge, in der positives und negatives Leistungsfeedback gegeben wird, für die Lernmotivation und bis zu einem gewissen Grad auch für die Prüfungsleistungen von Bedeutung ist. Abschließend werden in Kapitel 5 neue Erkenntnisse über die geschlechtsspezifischen Unterschiede bei den kognitiven Fähigkeiten von Erwachsenen vorgestellt, wobei gezeigt wird, dass diese in hohem Maße mit den Löhnen zusammenhängen, insbesondere an der Spitze der Lohnverteilung.

    Pietro Sancassani prepared this study while he was working at the Center for Economics of Education at the ifo Institut. The study was completed in March 2023 and accepted as a doctoral thesis by the Department of Economics at the LMU Munich. It consists of four distinct empirical essays and addresses various determinants and the consequences of student test scores. Chapter 2 investigates the impact of four teacher characteristics - whether teachers hold a Master's degree, a subject-specific qualification, a major in education, or their level of experience - on student science test scores in ten different countries. Chapter 3 shows that teacher subject-specific qualifications positively affect student science test scores in thirty countries around the world. Chapter 4 shows the association between a measure of patience derived from social media data and student test scores at the regional level. Finally, Chapter 5 shows that the salience of the education topic induced by the "PISA shock" in Germany led to an increase in the polarization of parliamentary debates about education. Pietro Sancassani erstellte diese Studie während seiner Tätigkeit am Zentrum für Ökonomie des Bildungswesens am ifo Institut. Die Studie wurde im März 2023 abgeschlossen und als Dissertation von der Fakultät für Wirtschaftswissenschaften der LMU München angenommen. Sie besteht aus vier verschiedenen empirischen Aufsätzen und behandelt verschiedene Determinanten und die Konsequenzen von Schülerleistungen. Kapitel 2 untersucht den Einfluss von vier Lehrereigenschaften - ob die Lehrer einen Master-Abschluss haben, eine fachspezifische Qualifikation, ein Hauptfach im Bildungswesen oder ihre Erfahrung - auf das Abschneiden der Schüler in naturwissenschaftlichen Tests in zehn verschiedenen Ländern. Kapitel 3 zeigt, dass Lehrer fachspezifische Qualifikationen von Lehrern die Ergebnisse von naturwissenschaftlichen Tests in dreißig Ländern der Welt positiv auswirken. Kapitel 4 zeigt den Zusammenhang zwischen einem Maß für Geduld, die aus Daten aus sozialen Medien abgeleitet wurde, und den Testergebnissen von Schülern auf regionaler Ebene. Kapitel 5 schließlich zeigt, dass die durch den "PISA-Schock" in Deutschland hervorgerufene Aufmerksamkeit für das Thema Bildung "PISA-Schock" in Deutschland zu einer zunehmenden Polarisierung der parlamentarischen Debatten über Bildung führte.
