The contributors to Anti-Portraiture examine individuality via a range of media including sculpture, photography, installation and sound art, and make a convincing case for an expanded definition of portraiture. By offering a timely re-appraisal of the terms through which this art form is approached, the authors volunteer new paradigms in which to consider selfhood, embodiment and representation.     Dans l'univers artistique comme ailleurs, le visage n'est pas un objet parmis d'autres. Même au XXe siècle, où l'art a tendance à saisir l'anonymat plutôt que la spécificité, la représentation de la figure humaine provoque encore une sensation singulière. Entouré souvent d'une série d'accesoires qui permettent d'identifier sa position sociale, le portrait est un genre respectable dans l'histoire de l'art. Le visage, lui, semble avoir pris ses libertés. Chronologique et thématique, à la lisière entre l'essai personnel et la recherche, cet ouvrage suis les changements de la représentation du visage dans la peinture au cours du XXe et XXIe siècles. Désormais les peintres procèdent plus par allusions que par descriptions : effacés ou recouverts (Giacometti, Fautier), visages inexpressifs (Jawlensky, Malevitch), flous et méconnaissables (Michaud). Les conflits et les génocides font naître des visages spectraux (Mus̆ic̆, Boltanski). Avec les années 1960, on assiste au "retour" du visage, décliné en série (pop art et hyperréalisme). La figure humaine se transforme en masque quand les créateurs greffent sur leur apparence les traits d'un autre (Cindy Sherman) ou fabriquent une représentation "améliorée" de soi (Orlan). Comme l'a affirmé François Mauriac, chaque fois qu'un artiste réalise un visage, il recommence l'art

    Figurative art is currently riding high. Contemporary works of figuration grace the walls of public institutions and commercial galleries alike. From the champions of paint such as Katherine Bernhardt and Adrian Ghenie to photographic artists such as Gillian Wearing and Cindy Sherman; from the drawings of Charles Avery to Grayson Perry's tapestries and Kara Walker's silhouettes; artists from diverse backgrounds working in a range of media are exploring new ways to depict the human form. Picturing People explores the reasons behind this resurgence and considers what the figure means to the artists who use it. Some ask questions about how marks coalesce into figures. Some draw on photographic imagery, some on art's own history to make sense of the digital present. Some seem to be influenced by scientific developments or philosophy as they invent parallel worlds; while others deliberately lose the individual in critiques of capitalist or communist socio-economic models.     "The portrait has historically been understood as an artistic representation of a human subject. Its purpose was to create visual or psychological likenesses or the expression of personal, familial or social identity; it was typically associated with the privileged individual. Recent scholarship in the humanities and social sciences however has responded to the complex nature of twenty-first century subjectivity and proffered fresh conceptual models and theories to analyse it. The contributors to Anti-Portraiture examine individuality via a range of media including sculpture, photography, installation and sound art, and make a convincing case for an expanded definition of portraiture. By offering a timely re-appraisal of the terms through which this art form is approached, the authors volunteer new paradigms in which to consider selfhood, embodiment and representation. In doing so they further this exciting academic debate and challenge the curatorial practices and acquisition policies of museums and galleries."

    Figurative art is currently riding high. Contemporary works of figuration grace the walls of public institutions and commercial galleries alike. From the champions of paint such as Katherine Bernhardt and Adrian Ghenie to photographic artists such as Gillian Wearing and Cindy Sherman; from the drawings of Charles Avery to Grayson Perry's tapestries and Kara Walker's silhouettes; artists from diverse backgrounds working in a range of media are exploring new ways to depict the human form. Picturing People explores the reasons behind this resurgence and considers what the figure means to the artists who use it. Some ask questions about how marks coalesce into figures. Some draw on photographic imagery, some on art's own history to make sense of the digital present. Some seem to be influenced by scientific developments or philosophy as they invent parallel worlds; while others deliberately lose the individual in critiques of capitalist or communist socio-economic models. This accessible, perceptive introduction features recent work by seventy new artists, all of whom successfully employ the figure to help make sense of the fast-paced and challenging world we live in.

    Dans l'univers artistique comme ailleurs, le visage n'est pas un objet parmis d'autres. Même au XXe siècle, où l'art a tendance à saisir l'anonymat plutôt que la spécificité, la représentation de la figure humaine provoque encore une sensation singulière. Entouré souvent d'une série d'accesoires qui permettent d'identifier sa position sociale, le portrait est un genre respectable dans l'histoire de l'art. Le visage, lui, semble avoir pris ses libertés. Chronologique et thématique, à la lisière entre l'essai personnel et la recherche, cet ouvrage suis les changements de la représentation du visage dans la peinture au cours du XXe et XXIe siècles. Désormais les peintres procèdent plus par allusions que par descriptions : effacés ou recouverts (Giacometti, Fautier), visages inexpressifs (Jawlensky, Malevitch), flous et méconnaissables (Michaud). Les conflits et les génocides font naître des visages spectraux (Mus̆ic̆, Boltanski). Avec les années 1960, on assiste au "retour" du visage, décliné en série (pop art et hyperréalisme). La figure humaine se transforme en masque quand les créateurs greffent sur leur apparence les traits d'un autre (Cindy Sherman) ou fabriquent une représentation "améliorée" de soi (Orlan).
