    This book examines the early work of William Carlos Williams in relationship to a woman's tradition of American poetry, as represented by Mina Loy, Denise Levertov, and Kathleen Fraser - three generations of women poets working in or directly from a modernist tradition. Joining revisionary studies of literary history, Professor Kinnahan sees Williams's work as both developing from the poetics of modernist women and as influencing subsequent generations of American women poets. Williams's poetry and prose of the 1910s and 1920s is read as a struggle with issues of gender authority in relationship to poetic tradition and voice. Linda Kinnahan traces notions of the feminine and the maternal that develop as Williams seeks to create a modern poetics. The impact of first-wave American feminism is examined through an extended analysis of Mina Loy's poetry as a source of a feminist modernism for Williams. Levertov and Fraser are discussed as poetic daughters of Williams who strive to define their voices as women and to reclaim an enabling poetic tradition. In the process, each woman's negotiations with poetic authority and tradition call into question the relationship of poetic father and daughter. Positioning Williams in relationship to these three generations of Anglo-American women writing within or descending from the modernist movement, the book pursues two questions: What can women poets, writing with an informed awareness of Williams, teach us about his modernist poetics of contact, and just as importantly, what can they teach us about the process, for women, of constructing a writing self within a male-dominated tradition?

    Many critics have noticed the paradoxes and contradictions in the work of William Carlos Williams, but few have analysed them in detail. Professor Ahearn argues that Williams criticism has not gone far enough in recognizing the uses Williams saw for contradiction. He contends that Williams began to acquire his own voice as a poet when he recognized that he could be a vehicle for contending voices. His reading departs from previous examinations of the early poetry in the emphasis it places on the poems as expressions of Williams's personal struggles with himself, his parents, his domestic role and his social position. We find a Williams whose contribution to modernism came not through a radical break with tradition or a rejection of inherited poetic norms alone, but rather in a cultivation of tension, conflict, and a kind of poetic 'crisis' that could be held forth as the metier of the modernist writer. The reconciliation of things as old as civilization itself with the newest form of poetry, Ahearn argues is the principal theme of Williams early poetic practice

    This book examines the early work of William Carlos Williams in relationship to a woman's tradition of American poetry, as represented by Mina Loy, Denise Levertov, and Kathleen Fraser - three generations of women poets working in or directly from a modernist tradition. Joining revisionary studies of literary history, Professor Kinnahan sees Williams's work as both developing from the poetics of modernist women and as influencing subsequent generations of American women poets. Williams's poetry and prose of the 1910s and 1920s is read as a struggle with issues of gender authority in relationship to poetic tradition and voice. Linda Kinnahan traces notions of the feminine and the maternal that develop as Williams seeks to create a modern poetics. The impact of first-wave American feminism is examined through an extended analysis of Mina Loy's poetry as a source of a feminist modernism for Williams. Levertov and Fraser are discussed as poetic daughters of Williams who strive to define their voices as women and to reclaim an enabling poetic tradition. In the process, each woman's negotiations with poetic authority and tradition call into question the relationship of poetic father and daughter. Positioning Williams in relationship to these three generations of Anglo-American women writing within or descending from the modernist movement, the book pursues two questions: What can women poets, writing with an informed awareness of Williams, teach us about his modernist poetics of contact, and just as importantly, what can they teach us about the process, for women, of constructing a writing self within a male-dominated tradition?

    The formation of Modernist literature took place in a cultural climate characterized by an unprecedented collaboration between painters, sculptors, writers, musicians, and critics on both sides of the Atlantic. Within this multifaceted movement, William Carlos Williams is a paradigmatic case of a writer whose work was the result of a successful attempt at integrating ideas and concepts from the revolutionary visual arts. This book takes up a range of questions about the deeper affinities between Williams's poetry and the visual arts (including photography) that have not yet been studied in depth. What connections, for example, inform Williams's programmatic insistence on "contact" and the "shallow" or intimate space in a Cubist painting (which, as Braque advocated, should open up toward the viewer instead of receding into the infinity of the traditional vanishing point)? Are there fruitful applications of such concepts as synesthesia and kinesthesia, much talked about in Futurism and Precisionism, to Williams's preoccupation with an "aesthetics of energy"? How does Williams successfully integrate in his poetry such fundamentally different concepts as Kandinsky's theory of expression and Duchamp's notion of the ready-made? This book is a major step toward a fuller exploration of the connection between the visual arts and Williams's concept of the Modernist poem, and of his achievement in transcending an art-for-art's-sake formalism to create poems which both reflect their own nature as a work of art and vividly evoke the world of which they are a part. As Williams repeatedly stressed, "[I]t must not be forgot that we smell, hear, and see with words and words alone, and that with a new language we smell, hear, and see afresh...."
