    "Whether situated in churches or circulating in more flexible, mobile works--manuscript and printed texts, jewels and rosaries, personal bequests, or antique "rarities"--monuments were ubiquitous in post-Reformation England. In this period of religious change, the unsettled meanings of sacred sites and artifacts encouraged a new conception of remembrance and, with it, changed relationships between devotional and secular writings, arts, and identities. Beginning in the parish church, Shaping Remembrance from Shakespeare to Milton moves beyond that space to see remembrance as shaping dynamic systems within which early modern men and women experienced loss and recollection. Removing monuments from parochial or antiquarian concerns, this study reimagines them as pervasively involved with other commemorative works, not least the writings of our most canonical authors. These far-reaching, flexible chapters combine three critical strands--religion, materiality, and gender--to describe the arts of remembrance as material and textual remains of living webs of connection in which creators and creations are mutually involved"--

This study, ranging from »Doctor Faustus« via colonial novels and 'satanic' rock music to »The Satanic Verses«, argues that the complexities of rationalization and demonization cannot be contained in the simplistic - and contradictory - topoi of the decline and return of the devil since the Renaissance. Yet amidst these shifts and countershifts there is one phenomenon that seems to defy historical change: the diabolization of authors who dared to write of the devil. Main description: Welche Wirkungen hatte das textuelle Teuflische, und wem nutzte es? Von »Doctor Faustus« über Kolonialromane und 'satanische' Rockmusik bis zu den »Satanic Verses« spannt sich eine Untersuchung, die deutlich macht: Es bedarf anspruchsvollerer Erklärungsmodelle als der widersprüchlichen Topoi vom Niedergang und der Wiederkehr des Diabolischen seit der Renaissance, um die komplexen Bewegungen von Entdämonisierung und Verteufelung in der Literatur Englands der letzten 500 Jahre zu verstehen. Diesen Verschachtelungen steht ein historisch fast konstantes Phänomen gegenüber: die Verteufelung des Autors, der vom Teufel geschrieben hat.

    Narratives of a descent to the underworld, of the sights to be seen and the punishments meted out there, have kept a hold on the popular imagination for millennia. The legacy from doctrinal warnings and the deep-set literary markers that identify a place of suffering and alienation continue to stimulate creative exchange and critical thinking. Such work takes risks: it braves the dark and questions the past. The contributions in this volume reflect on the exigency of hell in the stories that we tell. They consider the transfer and repurposing of motifs across genres and generational divides, and acknowledge the sustained immediacy of physical and psychological landscapes of hell. The essays span a wide chronological range and apply various contemporary critical approaches, including cognitive science, performance studies and narratology. This cross-period analysis is complemented by interviews with three creative practitioners: Jeya Ayadurai, director of "Hell's Museum" in Singapore, the actor Lisa Dwan, who is acclaimed for her dramatisation of Samuel Beckett's late works, and the writer David Almond. From ancient myth and early English sermons to mid-twentieth-century surrealism and current responses to terrorist activities and environmental damage, the literature of hell engages with issues of immediate relevance and asks its audiences to reflect on their cultural history, the meaning of social justice and the nature of embodied existence

    "Introduction For and Against Hope Is hope a virtue? Not necessarily. We hope for many things, some of them good, some bad. What we do or don't do about our hopes may also reflect on us, for better or for worse. One might hope for world peace or an end to poverty, and these appear to be worthy if improbable objects. Yet hoping for such things is not a good, or much of a good, in and of itself. Merely passive hope scarcely seems a virtue; it may appear an idle daydream. Hope for the good becomes meritorious when coupled with exertion: "I am hopefully helping, in my small way, to make good things happen." Conversely, hope, passive or active, can be for bad or morally dubious things: "I hope he breaks a leg." Not that all people would find this a bad hope. Hope for revenge may seem perfectly acceptable, and failure to avenge a slight dishonorable or shameful. There are hopes that fewer would condone: for instance, in President Truman's account, the Nazis' "hope to enslave the world."8 Yet people can and do hope for the success of persecuting regimes, the elimination of foes and foreigners. Envy, hatred, revenge, selfaggrandizement, and injustice are no less salient as motives and objects of hoping than their opposing virtues"--

Christian theology sees divine forgiveness as conditional upon a sinner's remorse and self-abasement before God, but also as a form of grace - unconditional and rooted only in divine love.
