    Verlagsinfo: Diese Sammlung von gut zwanzig Reportagen, Aufsätzen und Miszellen in englischer Sprache steht ganz im Zeichen Irlands. Irland wiederum steht ganz im Zeichen der Literatur und diese wiederum ganz im Zeichen von James Joyce und Samuel Beckett. Zunächst nähert sich der Autor ihnen reisend (per Fahrrad und auf Wanderschuhen), findet zu Beckett in den Wicklow-Bergen und zu Joyce in Galway und Connemara. Der Hauptteil des Buches aber beschäftigt sich mit Texten statt mit Landschaft. Meist sind es unscheinbare Textdetails, von denen aus das Werk des jeweiligen Autors in den Blick genommen wird – Fingernägel, Rennpferde oder Rinder bei Joyce, pulverisierte Kleinmaterialien oder Wege (konkreter wie metaphorischer Natur) bei Beckett. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit gilt Übersetzungs- und Transferprozessen; dem Schreiben zwischen Totalitätsanspruch und Weltfragmentarisierung wird nachgespürt; als Vergleichsfolie oder im Rahmen von Wirkungsstudien herangezogen werden dabei auch andere Autoren: Thorne Smith und Arno Schmidt, Herman Melville und Salman Rushdie. So wird aus der irischen Gesellschaft schließlich eine internationale Literaturkumpanei. Mit Seamus Heaney spazieren wir an der Irischen See, treffen an deren anderem Ufer auf John Galsworthy und Edward Thomas. Den Abschluss bildet ein detaillierter Blick auf die Beckett-Rezeption bei Jürg Laederach: „60 Ways To Play Sam Again", irlandfern zwar, aber nicht ganz Joyce-fern.

This volume analyzes political communiqués, petitions, news coverage, prison files, personal letters, poetry and short prose, and memoirs, highlighting the personal correspondence, auto/biographical narratives, and poetry of the following key women: Bernadette McAliskey, Eileen Hickey, Mairéad Farrell, Síle Darragh, Ella O'Dwyer, Martina Anderson, Dolours Price, Marian McGlinchey (formerly Marian Price), and Áine and Eibhlín Nic Giolla Easpaig (Ann and Eileen Gillespie), Roseleen Walsh, and Margaretta D'Arcy. This text builds on different fields and discourses to reimagine gender and genre as central to an interdisciplinary and intersectional prison archive. Centering Irish women's prison writings, in order to challenge canonization in history and literature, this volume argues that women's lives and words offer a different view of gender and nation as well as offer a fuller and more inclusive archive of Irish history and literature. Additionally, this book will point to the ways in which their politics of everyday life and their cultural work is a form of anti-colonial civil rights feminism, for it speaks truth to power in a world in which compliance and silence are valued. Overall, this text focuses on rethinking and recasting women's voices and words in order to document and promote the ongoing Irish freedom struggle from an abolitionist feminist perspective"--

    Drawing on historical, literary and cultural studies perspectives, this book examines the phenomenon of the "Returned Yank" in the cultural imagination, taking as its point of departure the most exhaustively discussed Returned Yank narrative, The Quiet Man (dir. John Ford, 1952). Often dismissed as a figure that embodies the sentimentality and nostalgia of Irish America writ large, this study argues that the Returned Yank's role in the Irish cultural imagination is much more varied and complex than this simplistic construction allows. Throughout the twentieth century and into the twenty-first, s/he has been widely discussed in broadcast and print media, and depicted in plays, novels, short stories and films. The imagined figure of the Returned Yank has been the driving impetus behind some of Ireland's most well-known touristic endeavours and festivals. In the form of U.S. Presidential visits, s/he has repeatedly been the catalyst for questions surrounding Irish identity. Most significantly, s/he has been mobilised as an arbiter in one of the most important debates in post-Independence Ireland: should Ireland remain a "traditional" society or should it seek to modernise? His/her repeated appearances in Irish literature and culture after 1952 - in remarkably heterogeneous, often very sophisticated ways - refute claims of the "aesthetic caution" of Irish writers, dramatists and filmmakers responding to the tradition/modernity debate.

    The essays in this collection all revolve around the notion of change in Ireland, whether by revolution or by evolution. Developments in the shared histories of Ireland and Great Britain are an important theme throughout the book. The volume begins by examining two remarkable Irishmen on the make in Georgian London: the boxing historian Pierce Egan and the extraordinary Charles Macklin, eighteenth-century actor, playwright and manslaughterer. The focus then moves to aspects of Hibernian influence and the presence of the Irish Diaspora in Great Britain from the medieval period up to the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century celebrations of St Patrick's Day in Manchester. The book also considers the very different attitudes to the British Empire evident in the career of the 1916 rebel Sir Roger Casement and the Victorian philologist and colonial servant Whitley Stokes. Further essays look at writings by Scottish Marxists on the state of Ireland in the 1920s and the pronouncements on the Troubles by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The book also examines change in the culture of the island of Ireland, from the development of the Irish historical novel in the nineteenth century, to ecology in contemporary Irish women's poetry, to the present state of the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland.
