Utilizing never explored original sources and with a unique focus on the persons involved, Michael Wachutka elucidates how kokugaku as a cornucopia of traditional knowledge played an important role in raising a new generation of truly national citizens. Commonly perceived as a purely premodern Edo-period phenomenon, 'national learning' counterbalanced an overly Westernization of society in the process of nation building and identity formation. In addition to kokugaku activities in religious administration and higher education, Wachutka provides a compelling account of the organization and endeavour of three successive academic societies whose most prominent members served as junction of kokugaku’s intellectual network in Meiji Japan

    "The late seventeenth century was a time of peace in Japan, and consequently, schools and culture flourished even for non-elites. Although publishing for vernacular-only (i.e., not literary Sinitic) readers was big business, both Japanese and Western scholarship has largely ignored these books, concentrating instead on a narrative of the development of the novel in the seventeenth century, culminating in the writings of Ihara Saikaku (1642-1693). In Pleasure in Profit, Laura Moretti studies lowbrow seventeenth-century literature on its own terms, and in doing so, not only presents a much more accurate picture of prose at this time but also contributes to our understanding of Japanese non-elites--for instance, how key principles of Buddhism and Confucianism spread to the populace--and comparative popular culture, showing that this literature was no different from the French bibliothèque bleue, British chapbooks, or the Russian literature of lubok"--

    "Offers a new approach for understanding the relationship between the formal features of Edo-period Japanese popular fiction and the social and political world beyond its pages. Those formal features, which include formulaicness, narrative modularity, typological characters, and strong intertextual engagement with literary tradition, can appear to hold the "real" world at arm's length, leaving scholars divided over how to understand the politics of commercial fiction-or whether we should seek a politics there at all. Atherton addresses this problem by expanding our understanding of form to encompass both the aesthetic and the social realms. Drawing connections between the formal features of fiction and the Edo period's deep investment in social and political formalization, he demonstrates fiction's power to intervene in the perception of the world: to alter the perception of time and space, make latent social and economic forces apprehensible, defamiliarize conventions, and give voice to socially peripheral persons. Atherton traces this argument through works by major writers like Asai Ryōi, Ihara Saikaku, Chikamatsu Monzaemon, Ueda Akinari, and Santō Kyōden, focusing on violence during the 250 years of peace ruled over by warriors that is the Edo period"--

    "Offers a new approach for understanding the relationship between the formal features of Edo-period Japanese popular fiction and the social and political world beyond its pages. Those formal features, which include formulaicness, narrative modularity, typological characters, and strong intertextual engagement with literary tradition, can appear to hold the "real" world at arm's length, leaving scholars divided over how to understand the politics of commercial fiction-or whether we should seek a politics there at all. Atherton addresses this problem by expanding our understanding of form to encompass both the aesthetic and the social realms. Drawing connections between the formal features of fiction and the Edo period's deep investment in social and political formalization, he demonstrates fiction's power to intervene in the perception of the world: to alter the perception of time and space, make latent social and economic forces apprehensible, defamiliarize conventions, and give voice to socially peripheral persons. Atherton traces this argument through works by major writers like Asai Ryōi, Ihara Saikaku, Chikamatsu Monzaemon, Ueda Akinari, and Santō Kyōden, focusing on violence during the 250 years of peace ruled over by warriors that is the Edo period"--

Commercial publishers released vast numbers of titles in response to readers’ hunger for books that promised them potent knowledge. However, traditional literary histories of this period position the writings of Ihara Saikaku at center stage, largely neglecting the breadth of popular prose.In the first comprehensive study of the birth of Japanese commercial publishing, Laura Moretti investigates the vibrant world of vernacular popular literature. She marshals new data on the magnitude of the seventeenth-century publishing business and highlights the diversity and porosity of its publishing genres. Moretti explores how booksellers sparked interest among readers across the spectrum of literacies and demonstrates how they tantalized consumers with vital ethical, religious, societal, and interpersonal knowledge. She recasts books as tools for knowledge making, arguing that popular prose engaged its audience cognitively as well as aesthetically and emotionally to satisfy a burgeoning curiosity about the world. Crucially, Moretti shows, readers experienced entertainment within the didactic, finding pleasure in the profit gained from acquiring knowledge by interacting with transformative literature. Drawing on a rich variety of archival materials to present a vivid portrait of seventeenth-century Japanese publishing, Pleasure in Profit also speaks to broader conversations about the category of the literary by offering a new view of popular prose that celebrates plurality
