Did the Greeks, or the ancient Christians, perceive the natural world differently from the way we do now? In Poetry, space, landscape Chris Fitter traces the history of nature-sensibility from the ancient world to the English Renaissance, setting poems and paintings in the widely differing cultural contexts that created them. He suggests a new social and historical theory of the conceptualization of space, explaining the rise and fall of the idea of 'landscape'. And he argues the dialectical case that enduring basic categories of perception create different readings of natural reality determined by our social and material relations with nature. A chapter on seventeenth-century English poetry concludes with fresh and substantial re-readings of Milton, Marvell, and many of their contemporaries in the light of this long tradition of landscape art."--BOOK JACKET.

If we ask the question 'why conserve nature?', and the answers are based on myths, then are these good myths to have? Scientific knowledge about the environment is fundamental to ideas about how nature works. It is essential to the conservation endeavour. However, any conservation motivation is nested within a society's meanings of nature and the way society values it. Given the therapeutic and psychological significance of nature for us and our culture, this book considers the meanings derived from the poetic and emotional attachment to a sense of place, which is arguably just as important as scientific evidence. The functional significance of species is important, but so too is the therapeutic value of nature, together with the historic and spiritual meanings entwined in a human feeling for landscape and wildlife

    Ziel der Gartenästhetik des ausgehenden 18. Jahrhunderts ist es gewesen, “Natur” anhand der ästhetischen Landschaftserfahrung als Bereich des persönlichen Erlebnisses allgemeinverbindlich erklären zu können. Die diskursanalytisch ausgerichtete Untersuchung zeichnet die Etablierung der Gartenkunst durch die Integration der zentralen ästhetischen, anthropologischen und politischen Konzepte der Zeit zwischen 1770 und 1800 nach und zeigt, warum der Landschaftsgarten im ersten Drittel des 19. Jahrhunderts als Kunstform seine Bedeutung in der kunsttheoretischen Diskussion weitgehend verloren hat. Damit wird das Scheitern eines der letzten Projekte zur Verbesserung der Menschheit beschrieben, das die äußere Natur als treibendes Prinzip verstanden hat und nicht als wertneutrales Objekt oder als zu beschützendes Reservat, das momenthaft von gesellschaftlicher Entfremdung heilen soll. Der Autor Michael Gamper, geboren 1967, hat in Zürich und Wien Germanistik, Allgemeine Geschichte und Volksliteratur studiert. Er war vier Jahre Assistent für neuere deutsche Literatur an der Universität Zürich und ist nun als Oberassistent am gleichen Seminar tätig.

    How we view nature transforms the world around us. People rehearse stories about nature which make sense to them. If we ask the question 'why conserve nature?', and the answers are based on myths, then are these good myths to have? Scientific knowledge about the environment is fundamental to ideas about how nature works. It is essential to the conservation endeavour. However, any conservation motivation is nested within a society's meanings of nature and the way society values it. Given the therapeutic and psychological significance of nature for us and our culture, this book considers the meanings derived from the poetic and emotional attachment to a sense of place, which is arguably just as important as scientific evidence. The functional significance of species is important, but so too is the therapeutic value of nature, together with the historic and spiritual meanings entwined in a human feeling for landscape and wildlife
