    "Vulgar Beauty offers a new theoretical framework for understanding the affective consumption of screen stardom. Mila Zuo examines mediated encounters with cinematized star beauty, particularly feminine beauty, in contemporary Chinese/American film-from film star Gong Li's performances in post-Mao films of the late 1980s and 90s to Ali Wong's recent stand-up comedy. Zuo proposes vulgarity as a critical methodology through which we can better understand beauty's materiality and the ways that our consumption of beauty has been shaped by dominant gendered, racialized, and colonial aesthetics. The book then uses the Chinese concept of weidao-which roughly translates to flavor-to think through the ways in which Chinese/American beauty is metaphorized as something edible, while at the same time its vulgarity, excessiveness, and materiality eludes or transgresses Western forms of knowing and seeing. Through her readings of salty, sweet, and bitter performances, Zuo shows how Chinese feminine beauty becomes a cinematic invention invested in forms of affective and racialized worldmaking"-- "In Vulgar Beauty Mila Zuo offers a new theorization of cinematic feminine beauty by showing how mediated encounters with Chinese film and popular culture stars produce feelings of Chinese-ness. To illustrate this, Zuo uses the vulgar as an analytic to trace how racial, gendered, and cultural identity is imagined and produced through affect. She frames the vulgar as a characteristic that is experienced through the Chinese concept of weidao, or flavor, in which bitter, salty, pungent, sweet, and sour performances of beauty produce non-Western forms of sexualized and racialized femininity. Analyzing contemporary film and media ranging from actress Gong Li's post-Mao movies of the late 1980s and 1990s to Joan Chen's performance in Twin Peaks to Ali Wong's stand-up comedy specials, Zuo shows how vulgar beauty disrupts Western and colonial notions of beauty. Vulgar beauty, then, becomes the taste of difference. By demonstrating how Chinese feminine beauty becomes a cinematic invention invested in forms of affective racialization, Zuo makes a critical reconsideration of aesthetic theory"--

    "The little-known story of screenwriter Salka Viertel, whose salons in 1930s and 40s Hollywood created a refuge for a multitude of famous figures who had escaped the horrors of World War ll. Hollywood was created by its "others"; that is, by women, Jews, and immigrants. Salka Viertel was all three and so much more. She was the screenwriter for five of Greta Garbo's movies and also her most intimate friend. At one point during the Irving Thalberg years, Viertel was the highest-paid writer on the MGM lot. Meanwhile, at her house in Santa Monica she opened her door on Sunday afternoons to scores of European émigrés who had fled from Hitler--such as Thomas Mann, Bertolt Brecht, and Arnold Schoenberg--along with every kind of Hollywood star, from Charlie Chaplin to Shelley Winters. In Viertel's living room (the only one in town with comfortable armchairs, said one Hollywood insider), countless cinematic, theatrical, and musical partnerships were born.     Was ist das Schöne, wer sind die Schönen – zumal im Kino? Fragen, deren Antworten nicht auf der Hand liegen. Immerhin ist die Zeit allmählich reif für einen Paradigmenwechsel in der ästhetischen Betrachtung des Films: weg von einer klassisch geprägten Auffassung, dass das Schöne mit interesselosem Wohlgefallen zu tun habe. Vielmehr müssen wir uns eingestehen, dass wir die Schönen – weibliche wie männliche Projektionen – mit Interesse besetzen und mit Begehren verfolgen. So ergibt sich ein Paradox von Nähe und Ferne: Oft ziehen die Schönen ihre Betrachter gleichsam magisch an, bis diese ihnen förmlich mit allen Sinnen ergeben sind, bisweilen fordert die als schön »ausgezeichnete« Person aber auch eine Art Ehrfurchtsabstand ein. Das gilt auch für das Verhältnis zu den Schönen im Kino. Es ist verlockend, sich bei dieser kniffligen Angelegenheit auf eine Vielzahl einzelner Fälle einzulassen. So ist mit diesem Buch eine Geschichte der Schönen, der zu »Ikonen« erhobenen oder stilisierten Schauspielerinnen und Schauspieler im Film, zustande gekommen; diese orientiert sich an ausgewählten Exempeln und Modellen – von Asta Nielsen bis zu Juliette Binoche, von Max Linder bis zu Johnny Depp. Manches Leinwandgesicht aus den 1920er Jahren, das damals für schön und anziehend erklärt wurde, wirkt heute merkwürdig altmodisch, wenn nicht sogar sonderbar skurril. Was als schön gilt, ist relativ. „Der von Koebner zusammengestellten Auswahl von Film- und anderen Schönheiten nach zu urteilen, müssen sich Körper und Gesicht eines Menschen nicht durch schlichte Ebenmäßigkeit auszeichnen, um im Auge des anderen als schön zu gelten. Vielmehr sind diesem oft ausdrucksstarke und somit interessante Gesichter die schönsten; gerade diejenigen also, die kein kantisch interesseloses Wohlgefallen evozieren... Insgesamt zeugt vorliegende Band von Koebners Vertrautheit mit der Historie der Porträtkunst und seinen umfassenden Kenntnissen nicht nur des populären Kinos. Allerdings verzichtet er allzu oft darauf, diese durch Belege auszuweisen. Ein Manko, dass insbesondere die Angaben gedruckter Quellen, weniger diejenige der Filme betrifft. Unabhängig davon kann man sehr wohl Freude an dem Band haben, nicht zuletzt aufgrund der zahlreichen Abbildungen schöner Menschen auf Gemälden, als Statuen oder im Film“ (literaturkritik.de)

    Foreign Devils investigates representations of exile in Hollywood cinema from 1930 to 1956 through the films of Peter Lorre, Béla Lugosi, and Conrad Veidt. This book dispels the assumption that by virtue of its hegemonic, reactionary, and exclusionary modes of representation, otherness is excluded from or only obliquely alluded to in classical Hollywood cinema. This book contends that Hollywood uses European émigré actors to speak of the experience of exile and the often-futile exilic attempts at integration into the host nation. This original, cross-disciplinary study incorporates a number of research interests in film studies - specifically Hollywood cinema, exile and émigré filmmakers, the Golden Age of the studio system, the Universal Horror cycle, and Poverty Row filmmaking. Foreign Devils combines the close reading of key texts with a theoretical framework that encompasses body theory and theories of space and nation with historical accounts of immigration to the United States and American concepts of nationhood through the symbolism of blood and death studies. Film studies students and academics, both undergraduate and postgraduate, as well as scholars in other disciplines, and anyone with an interest in Hollywood cinema, Central European culture in the 1930s-1950s, and European emigration to the United States will benefit from reading this book.
