From the very vast correspondence addressed to him we will be quoting specific lines or paragraphs that will give us a picture of the character and modes of thinking of the person who is rightly regarded as one of the greatest poets of our generation. It is on the basis of these letters that we attempt to create a portrait of Seamus Heaney. The letters are not what one would call finished compositions. They all exhibit personal feelings.
