Charles Carruthers, a minor British Foreign Office official, is recruited by an acquaintance to a top secret mission to foil a German invasion plan. The book was somewhat prescient, being published a decade before the outbreak of the First World War While on a boating trip, a foppish Foreign Office official and his friend uncover German plans for an invasion of England. Originally published to draw attention to pre-World War I German militarism, this book is the first spy thriller to be considered literature, and led to the reorganization of British Naval Intelligence
