    "This collection of essays examines the idea of the "double" as portrayed in Western art from about 1840 to 2010. It emerged from four panels on the theme that took place at regional and national scholarly meetings between 2012 and 2015. The first, "Two for One: Doppelgangers, Alter-Egos, Mirror Images and Other Duples in Western Art: 1850-2000", took place at the annual meeting of the Southeastern College Art Conference (SECAC) on October 19, 2012, in Durham, North Carolina. The second, "Seeing Double: Alter Egos and Mirror Images in Western Art 1800-1900", occurred at the next SECAC Meeting in Greensboro, North Carolina, on October 19, 2013. The last two took place as a double panel at the annual meeting of the College Art Association in 2015 on February 13 and 14, with the title "Two for One: Doppelgangers, Alter-Egos, Mirror Images, and Other Duples in Western Art: 1900-2000". - Aus der Einleitung
