    Jack Munroe was born in 1914, the only son of Amanda Munroe, and lived all of his life in Upton, a small mining village in West Yorkshire. His wife Liz was born Elizabeth Cooper. They were the same age, lived down the same street, went to the same school. They would always be together. 'Happy Jack' tells the story of the Liz and Jack as they struggle and thrive in life and love. A play for two actors, Liz and Jack voice the many characters that come to illuminate the story of their lives. Inspired by three generations of Godber's own family, 'Happy Jack' was first performed professionally at the Hull Truck Theatre Company in 1985.

    In 'Salt of the Earth', Godber presents an affectionate look at a West Yorkshire mining community, following sisters May and Annie, and their families, from the austerity of the post-war 1940s, to the miners' strikes in the 1980s. Beneath the humour is the ache of humanity, of people trapped in circumstances and jobs from which they feel they cannot escape. 'Salt of the Earth' was first presented as part of the Wakefield Centenary celebrations at the Theatre Royal and Opera House, Wakefield, in 1988.

    'Teechers' is a play within a play, as secondary school students Gail, Hobby and Salty put on an end of year performance in their drama class which tells the story of that last year in school, and in particular, of the arrival and departure of their inspirational if unconventional drama teacher, Mr Nixon. The three students each adopt many voices, with each rendered in clear and comic voice. 'Teechers' was written for, and first performed by, Hull Truck Theatre Company, premiering at the Edinburgh Festival in 1987.
