Written in 1978, 'Cloud Nine' was first performed at Dartington College of Arts, Devon, on 14 February 1979. The two acts form a contrapuntal structure and the play uses controversial portrayals of sexuality and obscene language to establish a parallel between colonial and sexual oppression. Its humour depends on incongruity and the carnivalesque, and helps to convey Churchill's political message about accepting people who are different and not dominating them or forcing them into particular social roles.

'Light Shining in Buckinghamshire' depicts the Diggers and Ranters during the English Civil War, and their last desperate burst of revolutionary feeling before the Restoration. It deals in the rawness of life during the Civil War and the crazy mixture of ideals and half-truths which led a group of free-loving pantheistic communists to set their standard against the standard of the false revolution of Cromwell's parliamentarians.

First produced at the Royal Court Theatre in 1972, 'Owners', a two-act, 14-scene play about obsession with power, was Churchill's first stage play and 'her first major theatrical endeavour'. Churchill's basic socialist views are very apparent in the play, which is a critique of the values that most capitalists take for granted: being aggressive, getting ahead, doing well.

First produced at the Royal Court Theatre in 1977 the play is set among a group of communards in their 20s and 30s; the only clear relationships are that 'Jack is Christie's younger brother, and Reg is her husband.' The constantly changing status of time, place, and character permit Churchill to examine the frailty of an individual life with no perceptible direction. She also undermines the self-perception of the characters as wounded or victimized by themselves, each other, or the world outside; motivation and chronology can turn on a dime, no matter the utopian intention of the community itself.
