Angaben zum Inhalt: Two-Way Mirrors engages in cross-cultural study—a pursuit inherently both reflective and reflexive, shedding light not only on the object of study but also on the subject conducting the study. The book's leading metaphor is that of the shopwindow, which is at once transparent (allowing a view of the merchandise on display) and reflective (offering an image of the prospective shopper). In the first section, "Polar Paradigms," Eugene Eoyang shows the different and oppositional premises in Eastern and Western poetics juxtaposed not as contradictory, requiring an either/or option, but as complementary, allowing for a mutual illumination of values. In the second section, Eoyang confronts the question of globalization and post-modernism bidirectionally, from an Asian as well as a Western perspective. In the third section, "Other as Self," the author examines, cross-culturally, traditional, modern, and postmodern notions of the self in poetry, drama, and autobiography, finding that any concept of the self entails a presupposition of the other. Eoyang concludes by speculating on the continuing development of comparative literature, a discipline particularly well suited to new modes of discourse both reflective and reflexive, as illuminating as a two-way mirror.
