    This volume gathers a dozen essays by the author on the ancient traditions of Mary's Dormition and Assumption, all of which expand on the work published in his major study on this topic, 'The Ancient Traditions of Mary's Dormition and Assumption' (Oxford, 2002). The essays were originally published between 1999 and 2011 and cover a broad range of topics in relation to traditions about the end of Mary's life, from ancient gnostic Christianity to Christian anti-Judaism to the beginnings of Marian veneration. Although each of these items was previously published in another venue, for the first time this volume makes these writings on the Virgin's Dormition available together, offering an important supplement and in some cases update of the earlier monograph. While its chapters remain largely faithful to the original publications in their content, when appropriate, they have been selectively updated to account for more recent research

    Le présent article fournit la première édition critique complète d’une forme brève du récit apocryphe de la Dormition de Marie en Six Livres. Un fragment syriaque de cette version était connu depuis 1865 (CANT 121) et était communément considéré comme la forme la plus ancienne de la Dormition en Six Livres et comme dépendant du texte grec du Pseudo-Jean. Le texte arabe karchouni publié ici donne maintenant accès à cette version dans son intégralité. Ce texte a été traduit au xviiie siècle à partir d’un manuscrit syriaque appartenant au Patriarcat syrien orthodoxe de Damas, et la traduction s’avère être très fidèle à son modèle. Outre l’édition du texte karchouni munie d’une traduction anglaise, le présent article inclut une introduction qui cherche à situer cette version particulière au sein de l’histoire de la composition de la Dormition en Six Livres et qui tend à conclure qu’il s’agit d’un résumé d’une forme plus ancienne du récit apocryphe. Un appendice confirme cette conclusion, grâce à une comparaison détaillée entre le texte karchouni et les autres versions syriaques transmises dans des manuscrits de la fin du ve et du vie siècle ; il montre que la version de Damas doit être comprise comme un abrégé et une réécriture d’un texte très proche de la version longue figurant dans le palimpseste de Cambridge édité par Agnes Smith Lewis (CANT 124).This article presents the first complete critical edition of a short form of the Six Books Apocryphon of the Virgin’s Dormition. A Syriac fragment of this version was known since 1865 (CANT 121) and widely considered as the earliest form of the Six Books Apocryphon and as dependent on the Greek Pseudo-John’s Dormition. The Arabic Karshuni text published here makes this version known in its full extent. It is a translation made in the 18th century from a Syriac manuscript belonging to the Syrian Orthodox Patriarchate in Damascus and it turns out to be a faithful translation of its model. In addition to an edition of the Karshuni text and an English translation, the article also includes an introductory study that seeks to locate this particular version within the literary history of the Six Books Apocryphon and tends to conclude that it is a résumé of some earlier form of the narrative. A concluding appendix confirms this conclusion by comparing in detail the Karshuni version with the other early versions extant in Syriac manuscripts of the late fifth and sixth centuries ; it shows that the Damascus version is best understood as an abbreviation and rewriting of a text which was very close to the long version found in the Cambridge palimpsest edited by Agnes Smith Lewis (CANT 124).

    In this article I respond to an article by Phil Booth on the Life of the Virgin attributed to Maximus the Confessor recently published in this journal ( JTS , ns 66 [2015], pp. 149-203). I take no issue with Booth’s arguments against Maximus’ authorship, as I have long maintained that this is a question that should largely be decided by experts on Maximus. Nevertheless, much of the article raises speculative critiques of my earlier publications on this text that require response and correction. Booth’s proposal that this Life of the Virgin was composed only in the tenth or eleventh century is extremely unlikely. As I clarify in this article, the scholarly consensus dating this text to the seventh century is much more probable, even if the eighth century cannot be entirely excluded. Moreover, the Life ’s witness to affective, emotional Marian piety demands further exploration in the context of late antiquity, rather than acquiescence to an older hypothesis that this was largely the invention of George of Nicomedia and his age. Finally, reconsideration of the Life ’s manuscript tradition casts significant doubt on the attribution of its Georgian translation to Euthymius the Athonite. Instead, the translation from Greek into Georgian most likely took place at the monastery of Mar Saba, sometime before the tenth century.

    The study of Islam's origins from a rigorous historical and social science perspective is still wanting. At the same time, a renewed attention is being paid to the very plausible pre-canonical redactional and editorial stages of the Qur'an, a book whose core many contemporary scholars agree to be formed by various independent writings in which encrypted passages from the OT Pseudepigrapha, the NT Apocrypha, and other ancient writings of Jewish, Christian, and Manichaean provenance may be found. Likewise, the earliest Islamic community is presently regarded by many scholars as a somewhat undetermined monotheistic group that evolved from an original Jewish-Christian milieu into a distinct Muslim group perhaps much later than commonly assumed and in a rather unclear way. The following volume gathers select studies that were originally shared at the Early Islamic Studies Seminar. These studies aim at exploring afresh the dawn and early history of Islam with the tools of biblical criticism as well as the approaches set forth in the study of Second Temple Judaism, Christian, and Rabbinic origins, thereby contributing to the renewed, interdisciplinary study of formative Islam as part and parcel of the complex processes of religious identity formation during Late Antiquity.
