Literature as Document considers the relationship between documents and literary texts in Western Literature of the 1930s. More specifically, the volume deals with the notion of the “document” and its multifaceted and complex connections to literary “texts” and attempts to provide answers to the problematic nature of that relationship. In an effort to determine a possible theoretical definition, many different disciplines have been taken into account, as well as individual case studies. In order to observe dynamics and trends, the idea for this investigation was to look at literature, taking its practices, its factual-looking and concrete applications, as a point of departure – that is to say, then, starting from the literary object itself

    Pourquoi s'entoure-t-on d'images ? Tableaux, gravures, photographies, cartes postales, images précieuses ou de peu couvrent les murs de nos habitations, selon des agencements variés. Ces dispositifs iconographiques sont autant de reflets de l'histoire personnelle, sociale et culturelle de leurs concepteurs. Et qu'en est-il alors pour un sujet écrivant : quel est l'impact de tels environnements visuels sur l'activité d'écriture ? À partir de quand une pratique culturelle banale, commune, prend-elle un sens particulier pour un homme ou une femme de lettres ? Tels sont les enjeux de ce livre inscrit au croisement des études littéraires et visuelles. À la fin du xixe siècle, l'environnement des écrivains se voit de plus en plus nourri de références picturales et de la présence concrète des images. Reproductions et œuvres originales sur leurs murs constituent-elles un simple décor ? Quels sont leurs liens avec la pensée esthétique développée par des littérateurs? Quelle place occupent-elles dans la genèse d'une œuvre ? Comment participent-elles d'une posture d'auteur? Et, sur le plan de la réception et de la patrimonialisation, comment les musées peuvent-ils exposer au mieux ces agencements visuels ? Des frères Goncourt à Yannick Haenel, en passant par Colette, Louis Aragon, Simone de Beauvoir ou Ramón Gómez de la Serna, le mur d'images devient un objet-clé du rapport de l'écrivain à la culture visuelle, y compris la plus contemporaine. Ce volume richement illustré explore ainsi, en sept chapitres et au travers d'une multitude de cas, différentes facettes du mur d'images tel qu'il a pu être investi du xixe siècle à nos jours. Il ouvre à une conception hybridée du fait littéraire, qui s'ancre dans les gestes iconographiques.

Literature as Document considers the relationship between documents and literary texts in Western Literature of the 1930s. More specifically, the volume deals with the notion of the “document” and its multifaceted and complex connections to literary “texts” and attempts to provide answers to the problematic nature of that relationship. In an effort to determine a possible theoretical definition, many different disciplines have been taken into account, as well as individual case studies. In order to observe dynamics and trends, the idea for this investigation was to look at literature, taking its practices, its factual-looking and concrete applications, as a point of departure – that is to say, then, starting from the literary object itself

L'écrivain vu par la photographie entreprend une vaste réflexion, tant historique que philosophique ou sociologique, qui se propose de penser la représentation photographique des écrivains en relation avec la médiatisation de l'activité littéraire, mais aussi plus largement avec la photolittérature, c'est-à-dire le rapport complexe, entre fascination et répulsion, entretenu par les écrivains avec ce medium depuis ses origines. Les portraits d'auteurs, la représentation de ses proches, de ses lieux de vie, voire L de ses objets familiers, font depuis longtemps partie de l'écosystème de la vie littéraire, mais les photographies des écrivains sont demeurées une sorte de face cachée des livres. À travers 25 contributions illustrées, cet ouvrage examine comment la littérature, le journalisme, l'enseignement, la publicité et le monde muséal, usent de ces images. Son ambition est de montrer tout ce que la photographie a changé dans la relation des lecteurs aux auteurs, du milieu du XIXe siècle à l'ère du numérique"-- Writers were among the most photographed figures in history, despite their frequent reservations. But what do we see from writers in their photographs? The writer, as seen by photography, undertakes a vast reflection (historical as well as philosophical or sociological) which proposes to think of the photographic representation of writers in relation to the mediatization of literary activity, but also more widely with photojournalism. That is to say, the complex relationship between fascination and repulsion has been maintained by writers with this medium since its origins. The portraits of authors, the portrayal of their close relations, places of life and even familiar objects, have long been part of the ecosystem of literary life, but the photographs of writers have remained a sort of hidden side of books. Through 25 illustrated contributions, this book examines how literature, journalism, education, advertising and the museum world use these images. Our ambition is to show all that photography has changed the relationship of readers to authors, from the mid-nineteenth century to the digital era
