We consider estimation of a dynamic distribution regression panel data model with heterogeneous coefficients across units. The objects of interest are functionals of these coefficients including linear projections on unit level covariates. We also consider predicted actual and stationary distributions of the outcome variable. We investigate how changes in initial conditions or covariate values affect these objects. Coefficients and their functionals are estimated via fixed effect methods, which are debiased to deal with the incidental parameter problem. We propose a cross-sectional bootstrap method for uniformly valid inference on function-valued objects. This avoids coefficient re-estimation and is shown to be consistent for a large class of data generating processes. We employ PSID annual labor income data to illustrate various important empirical issues we can address. We first predict the impact of a reduction in income on future income via hypothetical tax policies. Second, we examine the impact on the distribution of labor income from increasing the education level of a chosen group of workers. Finally, we demonstrate the existence of heterogeneity in income mobility, which leads to substantial variation in individuals' incidences to be trapped in poverty. We also provide simulation evidence confirming that our procedures work well.

"Promoting a greater understanding of intercultural interactions, this timely and engaging Research Handbook provides an overview of the current state of research on cultural intelligence and analyzes its prospects for the future. Including contributions from key researchers in the field as well as those with a more critical perspective, this comprehensive Research Handbook addresses the conceptual backdrop, the measurement and the antecedents of cultural intelligence. It further examines the outcomes associated with cultural intelligence, offers a higher-level analysis of the concept, and concludes with an evaluation of the future research prospects of cultural intelligence. All in all, the Handbook investigates the heightened importance of intercultural interactions among individuals, groups, organizations, and societies in an increasingly interconnected global community. Covering a wide range of perspectives on cultural intelligence and related constructs, this Research Handbook will be essential reading for students, scholars, and researchers in the areas of employment relations, international business, international and cross-cultural management, occupational psychology, and organizational behavior"--

We study a panel data model with general heterogeneous effects, where slopes are allowed to be varying across both individuals and times. The key assumption for dimension reduction is that the heterogeneous slopes can be expressed as a factor structure so that the high-dimensional slope matrix is of low-rank, so can be estimated using low-rank regularized regression. Our paper makes an important theoretical contribution on the "post-SVT (singular value thresholding) inference". Formally, we show that the post-SVT inference can be conducted via three steps: (1) apply the nuclear-norm penalized estimation;(2) extract eigenvectors from the estimated low-rank matrices, and (3) run least squares to iteratively estimate the individual and time effect components in the slope matrix. To properly control for the effect of the penalized low-rank estimation, we argue that this procedure should be embedded with "partial out the mean structure" and "sample splitting". The resulting estimators are asymptotically normal and admit valid inferences. Empirically, we apply the proposed methods to estimate the county-level minimum wage effects on the employment.

We investigate state-dependent effects of fiscal multipliers and allow for endogenous sample splitting to determine whether the US economy is in a slack state. When the endogenized slack state is estimated as the period of the unemployment rate higher than about 12 percent, the estimated cumulative multipliers are significantly larger during slack periods than non-slack periods and are above unity. We also examine the possibility of time-varying regimes of slackness and find that our empirical results are robust under a more flexible framework. Our estimation results point out the importance of the heterogenous effects of fiscal policy and shed light on the prospect of fiscal policy in response to economic shocks from the current COVID-19 pandemic.

In this paper, we estimate the time-varying COVID-19 contact rate of a Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR) model. Our measurement of the contact rate is constructed using data on actively infected, recovered and deceased cases. We propose a new trend filtering method that is a variant of the Hodrick-Prescott (HP) filter, constrained by the number of possible kinks. We term it the sparse HP filter and apply it to daily data from five countries: Canada, China, South Korea, the UK and the US. Our new method yields the kinks that are well aligned with actual events in each country. We find that the sparse HP filter provides a fewer kinks than the l1 trend filter, while both methods fitting data equally well. Theoretically, we establish risk consistency of both the sparse HP and l1 trend filters. Ultimately, we propose to use time-varying contact growth rates to document and monitor outbreaks of COVID-19.

It has been well known in financial economics that factor betas depend on observed instruments such as firm specific characteristics and macroeconomic variables, and a key object of interest is the effect of instruments on the factor betas. One of the key features of our model is that we specify the factor betas as functions of time-varying observed instruments that pick up long-run beta fluctuations, plus an orthogonal idiosyncratic component that captures high-frequency movements in beta. It is often the case that researchers do not know whether or not the idiosyncratic beta exists, or its strengths, and thus uniformity is essential for inferences. It is found that the limiting distribution of the estimated instrument effect has a discontinuity when the strength of the idiosyncratic beta is near zero, which makes usual inferences fail to be valid and produce misleading results. In addition, the usual \plug-in" method using the estimated asymptotic variance is only valid pointwise. The central goal is to make inference about the effect on the betas of firms' instruments, and to conduct out-of-sample forecast of integrated volatilities using estimated factors. Both procedures should be valid uniformly over a broad class of data generating processes for idiosyncratic betas with various signal strengths and degrees of time-variant. We show that a cross-sectional bootstrap procedure is essential for the uniform inference, and our procedure also features a bias correction for the effect of estimating unknown factors.

We consider inference about coefficients on a small number of variables of interest in a linear panel data model with additive unobserved individual and time specific effects and a large number of additional time-varying confounding variables. We allow the number of these additional confounding variables to be larger than the sample size, and suppose that, in addition to unrestricted time and individual specific effects, these confounding variables are generated by a small number of common factors and high-dimensional weakly-dependent disturbances. We allow that both the factors and the disturbances are related to the outcome variable and other variables of interest. To make informative inference feasible, we impose that the contribution of the part of the confounding variables not captured by time specific effects, individual specific effects, or the common factors can be captured by a relatively small number of terms whose identities are unknown. Within this framework, we provide a convenient computational algorithm based on factor extraction followed by lasso regression for inference about parameters of interest and show that the resulting procedure has good asymptotic properties. We also provide a simple k-step bootstrap procedure that may be used to construct inferential statements about parameters of interest and prove its asymptotic validity. The proposed bootstrap may be of substantive independent interest outside of the present context as the proposed bootstrap may readily be adapted to other contexts involving inference after lasso variable selection and the proof of its validity requires some new technical arguments. We also provide simulation evidence about performance of our procedure and illustrate its use in two empirical applications.

Common high-dimensional methods for prediction rely on having either a sparse signal model, a model in which most parameters are zero and there are a small number of non-zero parameters that are large in magnitude, or a dense signal model, a model with no large parameters and very many small non-zero parameters. We consider a generalization of these two basic models, termed here a "sparse+dense" model, in which the signal is given by the sum of a sparse signal and a dense signal. Such a structure poses problems for traditional sparse estimators, such as the lasso, and for traditional dense estimation methods, such as ridge estimation. We propose a new penalization-based method, called lava, which is computationally efficient. With suitable choices of penalty parameters, the proposed method strictly dominates both lasso and ridge. We derive analytic expressions for the finite-sample risk function of the lava estimator in the Gaussian sequence model. We also provide a deviation bound for the prediction risk in the Gaussian regression model with fixed design. In both cases, we provide Stein's unbiased estimator for lava's prediction risk. A simulation example compares the performance of lava to lasso, ridge, and elastic net in a regression example using feasible, data-dependent penalty parameters and illustrates lava's improved performance relative to these benchmarks.

Inference on partially identified models plays an important role in econometrics. This paper proposes novel Bayesian procedures for these models when the identified set is closed and convex and so is completely characterized by its support function. We shed new light on the connection between Bayesian and frequentist inference for partially identified convex models. We construct Bayesian credible sets for the identified set and uniform credible bands for the support function, as well as a Bayesian procedure for marginal inference, where we may be interested in just one component of the partially identified parameter. Importantly, our procedure is shown to be an asymptotically valid frequentist procedure as well. It is computationally efficient, and we describe several algorithms to implement it. We also construct confidence sets for the partially identified parameter by using the posterior distribution of the support function and show that they have correct frequentist coverage asymptotically. In addition, we establish a local linear approximation of the support function which facilitates set inference and numerical implementation of our method, and allows us to establish the Bernstein-von Mises theorem of the posterior distribution of the support function.
