    "Imagining Scotland" traces Scottish literary self-depiction in Scottish literature. It claims that Scotland must be seen as an imagined nation. Having lost its independence three hundred years ago when it became part of Great Britain, Scotland nonetheless went on seeing itself as a distinct entity. In the creation of this Scottishnessʺ, literature has played a vital role. It helped maintain the idea of being different, while at the same time it acknowledged that the Union was an established fact. Analysing four novels from different literary periods Sir Walter Scottś "Waverley" (1814), Lewis Grassic Gibbonś "Sunset Song" (1932), Alasdair Grayś "Lanark" (1981) and Irvine Welshś "Trainspotting" (1993) the study shows that all authors created images for their country. These images take over the function of myth. This myth-making contributed to the perpetuation of an idea of Scotland. Furthermore, the authors relied on the concept of the historical novel in order to incorporate their image, the myth of Scotland, into a narrative, which works as a fictional history for Scotland. In fact, the connection between myth, narrative and history is so close, that in "Waverleyś case, the image of Scotland as developed by Scott still dominates the imagination of Scotland up to the present day. This act of conversion, the study argues, is characteristic for Scottish writing: It is the logical consequence of living and writing in a Scotland-in-limbo, in a nation, which was not realised, yet never stopped imagining itself.
