Literary, linguistic and historical approaches are used (often in combination) in order to enhance and enrich the interpretation of the accounts, which for obvious reasons confronted the authors with a special challenge. Chapters drawing a comparison with other battle narratives and with other genres help to establish genre-specific elements in ancient historiography, and draw attention to the particular techniques employed by Herodotus and Livy in their war narratives

    Latin Syntax is a concise overview of the Latin syntax, based on modern academic insights. This book offers clear understanding of the most important characteristics of Latin grammatical sentence structure. The emphasis lies on acquiring knowledge of the language system as a whole, than on learning loose facts. In a separate chapter textual grammar is fully analysed, therefore linking it to the increasing attention that is given to acquiring translation strategies in high school education. This challenging course was developed in the daily routine of Latin university education. Latin teachers and students have been using this method for years, and it is now accessible through this book. Latin Syntax is accompanied by an exercise book provided by Mieke Koenen (VrijeUniversity Amsterdam). The exercise material is based on authentic Latin texts and sentences. Both books are also suitable for anybody with a general interest in Latin who wants to expand or keep their knowledge up-to-date. Inleiding tot de Latijnse syntaxis is een beknopt, op moderne wetenschappelijke inzichten gebaseerd overzicht van de Latijnse syntaxis, opgezet als cursusboek. Op een heldere manier worden aan de hand van aansprekende voorbeelden de belangrijkste kenmerken van de Latijnse zinsgrammatica behandeld. Hierbij ligt de nadruk meer op het verwerven van inzicht in het taalsysteem als geheel, dan op het aanleren van losse taalfeiten. Ook de tekstgrammatica komtin een apart hoofdstuk aan bod, waarmee het boek aansluit bij de toenemende aandacht in het middelbaar onderwijs voor het aanleren van vertaalstrategieën. Inleiding tot de Latijnse syntaxis gaat vergezeld van een "http://www.aup.nl/do.php?a=show_visitor_book&isbn=9789053569511">apart deel met gevarieerd oefenmateriaal, dat geheel gebaseerd is op authentieke Latijnse zinnen en tekstfragmenten. Hier kan de gebruiker niet alleen kennis maar vooral ook inzicht toetsen. De bekende vertaler van Latijnse poëzie Piet Schrijvers verzorgde voor dit deel een aantal vertalingen,waaronder een integrale nieuwe vertaling van Cicero's pleitrede voor Archias. Deze uitdagende cursus is ontwikkeld in de praktijk van het universitair onderwijs Latijn,waar hij door docenten en studenten al een aantal jaren enthousiast wordt gebruikt. Beide delen zijn ook geschikt voor ieder die zijn kennis van het Latijn wil actualiseren of uitbreiden.
