    To test for ethnic discrimination in access to outpatient health care services, we carry out an email-correspondence study in Germany. We approach 3,224 physician offices in the 79 largest cities in Germany with fictitious appointment requests and randomized patients' characteristics. We find that patients' ethnicity, as signaled by distinct Turkish versus German names, does not affect whether they receive an appointment or wait time. In contrast, patients with private insurance are 31 percent more likely to receive an appointment. Holding a private insurance also increases the likelihood of receiving a response and reduces the wait time. This suggests that physicians use leeway to prioritize privately insured patients to enhance their earnings, but they do not discriminate persons of Turkish origin based on taste. Still, their behavior creates means-based barriers for economically disadvantaged groups.

    We formulate a general model and stability notion for two-sided pairwise matching problems with individually insignificant agents. Matchings are formulated as joint distributions over the characteristics of the populations to be matched. These characteristics can be high-dimensional and need not be included in compact spaces. Stable matchings exist with and without transfers and stable matchings correspond exactly to limits of stable matchings for finite agent models. We can embed existing continuum matching models and stability notions with transferable utility as special cases of our model and stability notion. In contrast to finite agent matching models, stable matchings exist under a general class of externalities. This might pave the way for integrating matching problems in other economic models.

    In an experiment we first elicit the distributional preferences of subjects and then let them bid for a lottery, either in a Becker-DeGroot-Marschak (BDM) mechanism or a Vickrey auction (VA). Standard theory predicts that altruistic subjects underbid in the VA - compared to the BDM - while spiteful subjects overbid in the VA. The data do not confirm those predictions. While we observe aggregate underbidding in the VA, the result is not driven by the choices of altruistic subjects.

    We propose a learning dynamic with agents using samples of past play to estimate the distribution of other players' strategy choices and best responding to this estimate. To account for noisy play, estimated distributions over other players' strategy choices have full support in the other players' strategy sets for positive levels of noise and converge to the sampled distribution in the limit of vanishing noise. Recurrent classes of the dynamic process only contain admissible strategies and can be characterised by minimal CURB sets based on best responses to noisy play whenever the set of sampled distributions is sufficiently rich. In this case, the dynamic process will always end up in a set of strategies that contains the support of a (trembling hand) perfect equilibrium. If the perfect equilibrium is unique and in pure strategies, the equilibrium resembles the unique recurrent class of the dynamic process. We apply the dynamic process to learning in matching markets and sequential two player games with perfect information.

    In Österreich wird die Buchpreisbindung durch ein Bundesgesetz aus dem Jahr 2000 geregelt. Dieses Gesetz sieht im Wesentlichen vor, dass Verlage/Importeure von deutschsprachigen Büchern einen Mindestpreis festzusetzen haben, der von den Letztverkäufern bei Verkäufen an Letztverbraucher einzuhalten ist. Im Jahr 2014 wurde das Bundesgesetz dahingehend novelliert, dass auch der grenzüberschreitende elektronische Handel und der Handel mit E-Books unter die Buchpreisbindung fallen. Die gesetzlichen Regelungen zur Buchpreisbindung polarisieren sehr stark und diese Polarisierung wird dadurch verstärkt, dass sich die Argumente der Befürworter und Gegner meist sehr schwer mit validen Daten belegen lassen. Oft werden zum Beispiel Ländervergleiche zwischen einem Land mit und einem Land ohne Buchpreisbindung herangezogen. Das Problem dieser Ländervergleiche ist oftmals, dass es sehr schwierig ist, den Effekt der Buchpreisbindung zu isolieren, da auch andere Faktoren zwischen den Ländern (Struktur der Buchbranche, Konsumverhalten der Bevölkerung, Förderlandschaft etc.) grundlegend variieren. [...] Aufgrund der klar abgegrenzten Forschungsfrage und dem methodologischen Zugang stellt diese Studie ein Komplement zu klassischen juristischen bzw. ökonomischen Studien über die Buchpreisbindung dar. Es ist nicht das Ziel dieser Studie alle Vorund Nachteile der Buchpreisbindung zu analysieren und entsprechende Handlungsempfehlungen zu geben. Der Aufbau der Studie ist folgendermassen gegliedert: Kapitel 2 beschreibt den methodologischen Zugang und Kapitel 3 erläutert das Studiendesign. Die Resultate werden in Kapitel 4 präsentiert. In Kapitel 5 werden die wichtigsten Resultate zusammengefasst und diskutiert.
