Whether, and to what extent, behavioral anomalies uncovered in the lab manifest themselves in the field remains of first order importance in finance and economics. We begin by examining behavior of retail traders/investors making investment decisions in constructed laboratory markets. Our results show that the behaviors of the traders are consistent with myopic loss aversion. We combine the lab results with a unique individual-level matched dataset on daily stock market transactions and portfolio positions over a two year period. We find that lab behaviors help to predict, but do not fully capture, the essential real-world trading analogs of retail traders

While the role of commercial banks in financing economic growth and reducing poverty and income inequality is well documented in cross-country setup, the regional variations of the banking services within a country and its association with poverty reduction is understudied. Understanding of the local-level variations of banking services is essential for deeper understanding of financial inclusion and its impact on local-level poverty. To this end, we first shed light on the regional variations of a host of banking variables by creating a "banking atlas" using administrative data that captures the access to and use of banking services at the sub-district level in Bangladesh. The maps, uncovering interesting regional peculiarities, have the potential to be an important policy tool for targeting lagging regions and designing customized regional interventions in developing countries. Next, we link regional mapping of banking variables to the incidence of poverty using descriptive statistics and regression models. The regression results demonstrate that access to banking services is strongly associated with poverty reduction, even in the rural sample. However, in the case of use of banking services, the amount of deposit has a strong impact on poverty reduction but the amount of credit per adult is found to have no significant impact. These results corroborate the growing evidence that greater access to deposit services can promote saving and increase income. This study also highlights the importance of using administrative data to monitor local-level development.

We study the incidence and extent of bribes paid to the doctors in the public health facilities which are cleverly identified using a nationally representative survey. The survey asks households about the fees paid to public doctors, not about the bribe, which makes it less prone to reporting bias. We find that though consultations are free in the public health facilities, 41% of the patients who visited them paid about US$2 as a consultation fee, which is about 16% of their total medical expenditure. Three interesting generalized results that we find on the determinants of incidence and extent of bribe payment are: First, bribe givers and non-givers are different in terms of observed characteristics. Second, the same doctors, when sit in a private facility, charge more, setting an upper limit of bribes at public facilities. Third, travel time of the service seekers is used as a price discriminating device by the public service providers. Results have important implications for combating corruption, especially in developing countries.
