    Since the elections of Donald Trump and Justin Trudeau, unprecedented international attention is being drawn to the differences between the United States and Canada. This timely volume takes a close comparative look at the national imaginaries of the two countries. In its analyses of the two countries' cultural productions - literature, but also film, opera, and even theme parks - it follows the approach of Comparative North American Studies, which has been significantly advanced by Reingard M. Nischik's work over recent decades. Featuring such illustrious contributors as Linda Hutcheon, Sherrill Grace, and Aritha van Herk, the volume considers the works of writers such as Margaret Atwood, whose concern with both countries' identities is well known, but also offers surprising new insights, for example by comparing writing by Edgar Allan Poe with Canadian Yann Martel's novel Life of Pi and Nobel Prize-winning author Alice Munro's work with that of the American graphic novelist Alison Bechdel.     In contrast to the popular cliché of the 'stoic Indian,' humor has always been important in Native North American cultures. Recent Native literature testifies to the centrality of this tradition. Yet literary criticism has so far largely neglected these humorous aspects, instead frequently choosing to concentrate on representations of trauma and cultural disruption, at the risk of reducing Native characters and Native cultures to the position of the tragic victim. This first comprehensive study explores the use of humor in today's Native writing, focusing on a wide variety of texts spanning all genres. It combines concepts from cultural studies and humor studies with approaches by Native thinkers and critics, analyzing the possible effects of humorous forms of representation on the self-image and identity formation of Native individuals and Native cultures. Humor emerges as an indispensable tool for engaging with existing stereotypes: Native writers subvert degrading clichés of "the Indian" from within, reimagining Nativeness in a celebration of laughing survivors, 'decolonizing' the minds of both Native and non-native readers, and contributing to a renewal of Native cultural identity. This book will be of interest to scholars and students of Native Studies both literary and cultural. Due to its encompassing approach, it will also provide a point of entry for the wider readership interested in contemporary Native writing. Eva Gruber is assistant professor in the American Studies section of the Department of Literature at the University of Constance, Germany.

This first comprehensive study explores the use of humor in today's Native writing, focusing on a wide variety of texts spanning all genres. It combines concepts from cultural studies and humor studies with approaches by Native thinkers and critics, analyzing the possible effects of humorous forms of representation on the self-image and identity formation of Native individuals and Native cultures. Humor emerges as an indispensable tool for engaging with existing stereotypes: Native writers subvert degrading clichés of "the Indian" from within, reimagining Nativeness in a celebration of laughing survivors, 'decolonizing' the minds of both Native and non-native readers, and contributing to a renewal of Native cultural identity. This book will be of interest to scholars and students of Native Studies both literary and cultural. Due to its encompassing approach, it will also provide a point of entry for the wider readership interested in contemporary Native writing. Zentrale Bestandteile Akustischer Literatur sind Stimme und Schrift, die in ihrer Reziprozität zu betrachten sind und einer Auffassung von Sprache als intermediales und materielles Phänomen bedürfen. Sprache ereignet sich ausschließlich ?verkörpert?, was in der Stimme eine prototypische Ausformung erfährt. Aber auch in der Schrift materialisiert sich eine Eigensinnigkeit des Mediums, die sie von ihrer phonographischen Fixierungsfunktion emanzipiert. Formal konstituieren sich Mayröckers Audiotexte als akustische Realisierung eines schriftlichen Manuskripts. Insofern bildet der Hörtext die Basis des ästhetischen Erlebens und stellt das Zentrum des analytischen Interesses dar. Nichtsdestotrotz manifestieren sich auch im Schrifttext klangliche Strukturen, deren Qualität im akustischen Medium potenziert wird. Dementsprechend gestaltet sich Mayröckers Akustische Literatur als zirkulärer akustisch-visueller Transformationsprozess, der Textstufen generiert, die in unterschiedlicher Ausprägung auf Auditivität untersucht werden können. Durch Assonanzen im Wortgebrauch, rhythmisierende Wiederholungen und eine an Intonation und Prosodie angelehnte Interpunktion ist dem Schrifttext eine Klanglichkeit eingeschrieben, die bereits über das visuelle Medium rezipierbar ist. Neben dem Ausloten akustisch-radiophoner Gestaltungspotenziale insbesondere in den frühen experimentellen Hörspielarbeiten Mayröckers, werden die Eigenschaften der Stimme sowohl in ihrer abstrakt-narratologischen als auch performativ-materiellen Funktion ästhetisch fruchtbar gemacht. Kennzeichnend für die späten Audiotexte Friederike Mayröckers ist, dass die Stimme der Autorin selbst zur Aufführung gelangt. eng: This thesis discusses aesthetic characteristics (both in terms of production and reception) of Friederike Mayröcker?s Acoustic Literature and outlines approaches for an analysis of these characteristics. Central to Acoustic Literature are both voice and writing; their reciprocal relationship calls for a concept of language as an intermedial and as a material phenomenon. Language can only occure ?embodied?; this is prototypically exemplified by the (human) voice. Writing, too, is inherently influenced by its medium and is thus emancipated from its function of phonographic fixation. Formally, Mayröcker?s audio-texts are an acoustic realisation of a written manuscript. The audio-text is thus the basis of the aesthetic experience and the main object of analysis. Nevertheless, in the written text, too, there are acoustic structures to be found, whose quality is intensified by the acoustic medium. Thus, Mayröcker?s Acoustic Literature can be described as a circular acoustic-visual transformative process. It generates layers of texts which can be analysed as to their respective audidivity. Lexical assonances, rhythmic repetition and an interpunctuation related to intonation and prosody give the written text an acoustic quality which can already be perceived via the visual medium. Especially in her early experimental radio plays, Mayröcker explores the potential of acoustic-radiophonic arrangements and she draws on the aesthetic properties of the voice both in terms of its abstract-narratological and of its performative-material function. Her later works characteristiccally feature the author?s voice itself.
