University Writing: Selves and Texts in Academic Societies examines new trends in the different theoretical perspectives (cognitive, social and cultural) and derived practices in the activity of writing in higher education. These perspectives are analyzed on the basis of their conceptualization of the object academic and scientific writing; of the writers -- their identities, attitudes and perspectives, be it students, teachers or researchers; and of the derived instructional practices -- the ways in which the teaching-learning situations may be organized. The volume samples writing research traditions and perspectives both in Europe and the United States, working on their situated nature and avoiding easy or superficial comparisons in order to enlarge our understanding of common problems and some emerging possibilities. In addition, the volume promotes a dialogue between these perspectives and traditions and, by addressing the identified needs and unsolved questions, bridges gaps and move forward in our knowledge regarding academic writing activities in higher education settings. University Writing: Selves and Texts in Academic Societies is addressed to researchers, advanced students and those academics interested in learning about European and North-American writing research traditions in dialogue and about how to take the individual and social perspectives in writing into account.

Provides a detailed overview of the research exploring a wide range of ideas, theories, and practices around written text production. This book deals with issues around the development of basic ('low-level') writing skills, mainly in the early years of education. It also focuses directly on issues around the teaching and learning of writing.

At European universities, writing is a traditional way of learning, assessment, and independent study, but it is handled in an implicit, tradition-based way that has only recently been contrasted with and supported by a more explicit writing ped-agogy. Still, little systematic knowledge is available about the pedagogical ap-proaches to writing, writing practices, and genres across Europe and much of it is codified in the national languages without correlation to internationally accept-ed terminology and theories. This book explores the writing cultures of Europe, nation by nation, and reports the idiosyncrasies for each respective country. The reports are based on a 17-item topic list used by the authors to collect data be-fore synthesizing the results. Next to writing practices and genres, a high level of emphasis was placed on the structure of educational systems, the languages in use, and the kind of support provided for student writers. Note: This research project has been conducted within the framework of COST Action IS0703 “European Research Network on Learning to Write Effectively”, funded by the European Union. We are also thankful to Christiane Donahue, Eliza Kitis, Charles Bazerman, Helmut Gruber, and David Russell for their cooperation and support in this project.

In the multilingual context of European higher education, both the need to study new linguistic situations in diverse educational contexts and the pressure to meet the demands of contemporary teaching are challenging tasks for writing research. Over the past 30 years, the study of teaching and learning of writing constitutes a major field of interdisciplinary research which has compiled a substantial body of knowledge but still expands with respect to new research questions, new research fields and new methodologies. This expansion is particularly evident in this section on the teaching and learning of writing, which contains a large number of contributions on writing and reading processes, teaching methods, learner characteristics and text genres. The perspectives of the studies vary, as do the subjects studied, the contexts, the purposes of writing and the educational situations. The section is organized into five major sections which have been defined on the basis of the main research lines or research perspectives followed: – Focus on writing instruction – Focus on writing process – Focus on text assessment – Focus on learner and teacher variables – Focus on genre This classification is somewhat arbitrary, as most studies touch on more than one field. Still, we feel that each of the following papers has a main focus that allows classification into one of the proposed subsections. Other variables and study characteristics were excluded from the classification, as, for example the participants’ characteristics (e.g. with or without learning disabilities (LD)), the educational level (primary, secondary or higher education), the methodological approach (descriptive, correlational or experimental) and the theoretical approach. Some of the papers may share several or even all of these characteristics but are placed in different sections on the basis of their main research focus.
