    "Traditionally, the American immigrant novel has been characterized by the plot of assimilation and stories about becoming (or failing to become) American. However, the focus on individual stories of transcendence (the migrants that "make it,") often obfuscates larger forces that lead to migration and determine the conditions once migrants arrive. The genre of immigrant literature also depends on a model of reading empathetically that can easily slip into projection and condescension. As Glenda Carpio argues, the semi/autobiographical tales of Americanization tend to reinforce difference and keep non-immigrant readers in the sentimental terrain where feeling badly for sufferers is a privilege, a commodity that gets packaged and sold. In Migrant Aesthetics, Glenda Carpio focuses on how a set of contemporary novelists, including Teju Cole, Dinaw Mengetsu, Aleksandar Hemon, Valeria Luiselli, Julie Otsuka, Junot Díaz, Edwidge Danticat and Karla Cornejo Villavicencio, frame migration crises on a broad, as opposed to a personal, scale and the formal strategies they employ to examine larger forces shaping migration. Through their particular styles, these writers highlight historical resonances across genres, as well as across time and space, to reveal the broad scale of migration and its relationship to the slave trade, colonialism, and neo-colonialism. These writers' works foreclose standard empathetic readings by rejecting autobiography in favor of strategic anonymity, choral or collective narration, unlikable narrators, and shifting vantage points. Ultimately, these writers challenge the view that migration is the problem of the migrant, who must beg admission to sites of power"--

    Hailed as 'the father of black literature in the twentieth century', Richard Wright was an iconoclast, an intellectual of towering stature, whose multidisciplinary erudition rivals only that of W. E. B. Du Bois. This collection captures Wright's immense power, which has made him a beacon for writers across decades, from the civil rights era to today. Individual essays examine Wright's art as central to his intellectual life and shed new light on his classic texts - Native Son and Black Boy. Other essays turn to his short fiction, and non-fiction as well as his lesser-known work in journalism and poetry, paying particular attention to manuscripts in Wright's archive - unpublished letters and novels, plans for multivolume works - that allow us to see the depth and expansiveness of his aesthetic and political vision. Exploring how Wright's expatriation to France facilitated a broadening of this vision, contributors challenge the idea that expatriation led to Wright's artistic decline.

    By most accounts, immigrant literature deals primarily with how immigrants struggle to adapt to their adopted countries. Its readers have come to expect stories of identity formation, of how immigrants create ethnic communities and maintain ties to countries of origin. Yet such narratives can center exceptional stories of individual success or obscure the political forces that uproot millions of people the world over.Glenda R. Carpio argues that we need a new paradigm for migrant fiction. Migrant Aesthetics shows how contemporary authors—Teju Cole, Dinaw Mengestu, Aleksandar Hemon, Valeria Luiselli, Julie Otsuka, and Junot Díaz—expose the historical legacies and political injustices that produce forced migration through artistic innovation. Their fiction rejects the generic features of immigrant literature—especially the acculturation plot and the use of migrant narrators as cultural guides who must appeal to readerly empathy. They emphasize the limits of empathy, insisting instead that readers recognize their own roles in the realities of migration, which, like climate change, is driven by global inequalities. Carpio traces how these authors create literary echoes of the past, showing how the history of (neo)colonialism links distinct immigrant experiences and can lay the foundation for cross-ethnic migrant solidarity.     Glenda R. Carpio argues that we need a new paradigm for migrant fiction. She shows how contemporary authors expose the historical legacies and political injustices that produce forced migration. "Traditionally, the American immigrant novel has been characterized by the plot of assimilation and stories about becoming (or failing to become) American. However, the focus on individual stories of transcendence (the migrants that "make it,") often obfuscates larger forces that lead to migration and determine the conditions once migrants arrive. The genre of immigrant literature also depends on a model of reading empathetically that can easily slip into projection and condescension. As Glenda Carpio argues, the semi/autobiographical tales of Americanization tend to reinforce difference and keep non-immigrant readers in the sentimental terrain where feeling badly for sufferers is a privilege, a commodity that gets packaged and sold. In Migrant Aesthetics, Glenda Carpio focuses on how a set of contemporary novelists, including Teju Cole, Dinaw Mengetsu, Aleksandar Hemon, Valeria Luiselli, Julie Otsuka, Junot Díaz, Edwidge Danticat and Karla Cornejo Villavicencio, frame migration crises on a broad, as opposed to a personal, scale and the formal strategies they employ to examine larger forces shaping migration. Through their particular styles, these writers highlight historical resonances across genres, as well as across time and space, to reveal the broad scale of migration and its relationship to the slave trade, colonialism, and neo-colonialism. These writers' works foreclose standard empathetic readings by rejecting autobiography in favor of strategic anonymity, choral or collective narration, unlikable narrators, and shifting vantage points. Ultimately, these writers challenge the view that migration is the problem of the migrant, who must beg admission to sites of power"--

Yet such narratives can center exceptional stories of individual success or obscure the political forces that uproot millions of people the world over.Glenda R. Carpio argues that we need a new paradigm for migrant fiction. Migrant Aesthetics shows how contemporary authors-Teju Cole, Dinaw Mengestu, Aleksandar Hemon, Valeria Luiselli, Julie Otsuka, and Junot Díaz-expose the historical legacies and political injustices that produce forced migration through artistic innovation. Their fiction rejects the generic features of immigrant literature-especially the acculturation plot and the use of migrant narrators as cultural guides who must appeal to readerly empathy. They emphasize the limits of empathy, insisting instead that readers recognize their own roles in the realities of migration, which, like climate change, is driven by global inequalities. Carpio traces how these authors create literary echoes of the past, showing how the history of (neo)colonialism links distinct immigrant experiences and can lay the foundation for cross-ethnic migrant solidarity. Revealing how migration shapes and is shaped by language and narrative, Migrant Aesthetics casts fiction as vital testimony to past and present colonial, imperial, and structural displacement and violence.

    The first sustained critical examination of the work of Dominican-American writer Junot Díaz, this interdisciplinary collection considers how Díaz's writing illuminates the world of Latino cultural expression and trans-American and diasporic literary history. Interested in conceptualizing Díaz's decolonial imagination and his radically re-envisioned world, the contributors show how his aesthetic and activist practice reflect a significant shift in American letters toward a hemispheric and planetary culture. They examine the intersections of race, Afro-Latinidad, gender, sexuality, disability, poverty, and power in Díaz's work. Essays in the volume explore issues of narration, language, and humor in The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, the racialized constructions of gender and sexuality in Drown and This Is How You Lose Her, and the role of the zombie in the short story "Monstro." Collectively, they situate Díaz's writing in relation to American and Latin American literary practices and reveal the author's activist investments.
