    This book presents the editions of Chopin’s works as cultural texts and gives account of the main events in their reception history. Based on a new typology and an overview of copyright and economics, 140 editions evidence a dominance of a few popular works and genres (nocturnes, mazurkas, waltzes) and two distinctive tendencies in editing: academic (historical-monumental) and popular (salon & entertainment music). Four case studies research real-life typology, reprints, edition filiation, and the use of compositional sources. The author addresses edition aesthetics, from musical work ontology through national aspects of reception and recontextualisation strategies to the role of women in Chopin editing and axiological aspects of editions. The appendix includes forewords to major Chopin editions

    This book studies the effect the invention of the printing press had on music during the 16th century Quel a été l'impact de l'invention de l'imprimerie sur la culture musicale du xvie siècle ? Telle est la question à laquelle ce livre tente d'apporter une réponse en abordant tous les aspects du phénomène. En retraçant l'histoire des débuts de l'imprimerie musicale et ses fondements technologiques, économiques et sociaux, l'auteur présente le marché des éditions musicales qui s'est ainsi formé, analyse la relation entre le contenu et la forme extérieure des éditions ainsi que les conditions économiques dans lesquelles celles-ci ont circulé. Les liens de concurrence entre les ateliers d'imprimeurs sont également détaillés, avec pour toile de fond le milieu du mécénat qui a permis leur floraison. La typographie a participé au développement de la culture musicale en permettant l'unification d'un répertoire européen, mais elle a également contribué à accentuer les différences entre genres et styles musicaux. Garante de la longévité de certains types d'expression musicale, elle s'est également fait le véhicule promotionnel de nouvelles œuvres ainsi que des réactions des compositeurs face aux événements religieux ou politiques du moment. Le nouveau médium a influencé non seulement la circulation du répertoire mais également la conscience des compositeurs, leur sens de l'autorité et de l'individualité. L'auteur du livre défend l'idée d'un vaste élargissement de l'horizon social et esthétique de la culture musicale grâce à la révolution de l'imprimerie. De nouveaux types de composition musicale sont apparus et le public de la musique imprimée s'est lui aussi considérablement élargi. Cet ouvrage montre comment ces divers phénomènes se trouvent, à la naissance de l'ère moderne, liés entre eux, en observant comment certains - initiés au xvie siècle - sont toujours sensibles au sein la culture d'aujourd'hui"
