Ihre einzigartige Prosa macht dies zu einem tiefgründigen, mutigen und in manchen Momenten leidenschaftlichen Essay. Barbara Baert ist Professorin für Kunstgeschichte an der KU Löwen. Sie lehrt Ikonologie, Kunsttheorie und Analyse sowie Kunst des Mittelalters. Ihre Arbeit vereint Wissen und Fragen aus der Ideengeschichte, Kulturanthropologie und Philosophie und zeugt von einem tiefen Verständnis für kulturelle Archetypen und ihre Symptome in den Bildkünsten Humankind has traditionally had a special relationship with the atmospheric characteristics of their environment, especially when it comes to rain. Using unique and expertly developed cases - from prehistoric cave paintings up to the meaning of rain in photography and cinema - this book casts new light on a theme that is both ecological and iconological, both natural and cultural-historical. Are our current paradigms in the visual studies enough to be able to describe the art and culture surrounding rain in a nuanced way, even to reach Beyond? Considering one does not simply look at the rain, one looks into the rain? Its effect on the audience is contaminating, it seeps through, elusive and dynamic. In the book, important cultural thinkers from both the past as well as the present are invited to carefully consider these questions with the author.     This anthology is the result of an interdisciplinary project on the phenomenon of the decapitated head of Saint John the Baptist in its exegetical context, in the material culture of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and finally in more recent approaches regarding medium studies. Several specialists and scholars from these fields were invited to share their most recent conclusions, thus contributing to our understanding of one of the most peculiar events, artifacts and phenomena in West: the rise and fall of a male head as subject of martyrdom, devotion and artistic expression.     The so-called 'Garden of delights' by Jheronimus Bosch (c. 1450-1516) remains an absolutely iconic work in European art history. The highly complex and enigmatic image has frequently been interpreted as a paradisiacal utopia, in which people indulge playfully in erotic pleasure in harmony with nature. It is a visual utopia framed before Thomas More had actually coined the word in a book whose entirely unfrivolous blueprint for society could hardly differ more from Bosch's phantasm. More traditional art historians have identified Bosch's masterpiece as a painted warning against the sins of the body, more specifically that of 'lust,' citing the image of Hell in the right wing in support. Vandenbroeck argues that these two interpretations need not preclude one another: Bosch painted a phantasmagorical false paradise that leads inexorably to ruin. He drew his inspiration from folk ideas about a semi-earthly, semi-supernatural erotic paradise or grail, in which those who entered could live in a dream-world of unbridled pleasure. But only until Judgement Day, upon which they would all wind up in Hell
