    Although vastly influential in German-speaking Europe, conceptual history (Begriffsgeschichte) has until now received little attention in English. This genre of intellectual history differs from both the French history of mentalités and the Anglophone history of discourses by positing the concept - the key occupier of significant syntactical space - as the object of historical investigation. Contributions by distinguished practitioners and critics of conceptual history from Europe and America illustrate both the distinctiveness and diversity of the genre. The first part of the book is devoted to the origins and identity of the field, as well as methodological issues. Part two presents exemplary studies focusing either on a particular concept (such as Maurizio Viroli's 'Reason of the State') or a particular approach to conceptual history (e.g. Bernard Scholz for literary criticism and Terence Ball for political science). The final, most innovative section of the book looks at concepts and art - high, bourgeois and demotic. Here Bram Kempers discusses the conceptual history of Raphael's frescos in the Stanza della Segnatura of the Vatican; Eddy de Jongh examines the linguistic character of much Dutch genre painting; and Rolf Reichardt considers the conceptual structure implicit in card games of the French Revolution, used to induct those on the margins of literacy into the new revolutionary world-view.

    We know that history can be affected - and effected - by language and translations, a primary example being Luther´s translation of the Bible into German. Even the political processes of very complex modern societies are controlled by language processes, including deficiencies and communication misunderstandings. But how was the striving for peace transmitted between the various dynasties and societies in Europe? What was the political and cultural role of language in making and preserving peace? A number of individual studies have addressed the diplomatic methods and strategies of the premodern era, but they did not systematically treat the communicative dimension of peace negotiations of early modern times. The contributions in this edited volume are concerned with this complex question and touch on many individual aspects as well.

Why, then, is public discourse often - and today more than ever, it would seem - so uncivil, even delusional? The reason, argues James Martin in this timely book, lies in the way speech works to organise desire. More than knowledge or rational interests, public speech services an unconscious urge for a lost enjoyment, stimulating an excess in subjectivity that moves us in body and mind.
    James Martin draws upon the work of psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan as well as other Continental thinkers to set out a new approach to the analysis of rhetoric and answer the troubling question of whether civil discourse can ever hope to escape its obscene underside.

In ihrer Studie zeigt Stephanie Langer, dass dieses Konzept von einer genuin gegenwärtigen Rhetorik geprägt ist, indem sie die Kultur- und Mediengeschichte der Rechtsmedizin in Goethezeit, Moderne und Gegenwart nachvollzieht. Anhand ausgewählter literarischer Texte, die mit zeitgenössischen Fällen kontextualisiert werden, fragt sie nach den Medien und den Metaphern der Rechtsmedizin sowie nach dem Einsatzpunkt von Literatur in der Geschichte des toten Körpers. Klappentext engl.: Today, autopsies are conducted everywhere. TV series, thrillers and even non-fictional works suggest that when a dead body is examined it tells a story. Hence, the corpse works as a text that is read by a physician/pathologist. This text contains all the details about the body’s life and death. In this study, Stephanie Langer shows that this concept is a specific form of expression rooted in the present. Proving her thesis, she discusses the cultural and media history of forensic medicine in the Goethe era, modernity and the present. By analysing both literary texts and contemporary cases, she explores the media and metaphors of forensic medicine as well as the relationship between literature and knowledge.

Die platonischen Motive der Selbstsorge und des guten Lebens, der Seelentherapie und Scham führen, wie die Untersuchung zeigt, auf eine selbstreflexive und auf das Ziel des Guten hin ausgerichtete Erkenntnisbewegung, die vermittelnd und heilend auf das Seele-Leib-Verhältnis wirkt. Die Studie konturiert die Dynamik seelischer Lernprozesse an spezifischen, auch bildlichen Vergegenwärtigungsformen und an Übergängen von Wissen. Platons Verankerung seines Bildungskonzepts in einer philosophischen Anthropologie und seine Transformation von Rhetorik und Poetik werden an der Eros-Figur im Phaidros manifest. Plato's concept of education raises the question of the conditions under which the epistemic quest and a change in the attitude of the soul actually correlate. The Platonic motifs of self-care and a good life, soul therapy and shame lead, as this study shows, to a self-reflective movement of knowledge, which has an orienting effect in view of the good and a mediating and ordering effect regarding the soul-body relationship. This work contours the dynamics of learning processes on specific, and figurative, forms of representation and on transitions of knowledge. Plato's anchoring of his educational concept in a philosophical anthropology and his transformation of rhetoric and poetics become manifest through the figure of Eros in the ‘Phaedrus’.

    As a genre situated at the crossroad of rhetoric and fiction declamatio offers the freedom to experiment with new forms of discourse. Placing the literariness of declamatio into the spotlight, this volume showcases declamation as a realm of genuine literary creation with its own theoretical underpinning, literary technique and generic conventions. Focusing on the oeuvre of Calpurnius Flaccus this volume demonstrates that these texts constitute a genre on their own, the rhetorical and literary framework of which remains not yet fully mapped. Contributions from an international group of leading scholars from the field of Roman Literature and Rhetoric will explore the question of how Roman Declamation functions as a literary genre. This volume investigates the literary technique and the generic conventions of declamatio in its social, pedagocial and ethical context to determine "the poetics" of Roman Declamation.     The work of Carlo Michelstaedter (1887–1910) was the first to analyze modernist philosophy in strict connection with social changes in mass society. Revealing how Michelstaedter was able to unveil the relations between pivotal early-modernist philosophies and social restructurings, The Wreckage of Philosophy examines the ongoing processes of "specialization," "rationalization," and "atomization." It points out how Michelstaedter connected the main theoretical expressions of modernism with the decisive social transformations of the early twentieth century, taking into consideration the key players of modernist philosophy, such as Friedrich Nietzsche, Henri Bergson, Ernst Mach, and William James. By following Michelstaedter’s analysis and strategies, The Wreckage of Philosophy focuses on several intertwined issues: the distinct philosophical positions within the modernist area; the connections between philosophy and modernist literature; the relations between intellectual positions and social upheavals; and the early-twentieth-century links among traditional philosophy, critique of language, and epistemology of technique

    Kooperativer Bibliotheksverbund Berlin-Brandenburg (KOBV)

     

    Ciceros actio secunda in Verrem gehört zweifellos zu den bekanntesten Reden des großen römischen Politikers. Dennoch wurde sie bisher nur teilweise in moderner Kommentierung erschlossen. Diese Forschungslücke wird durch den hier vorgelegten Kommentar für De praetura Siciliensi geschlossen. Das zweite Buch der actio secunda ist so unterschiedlichen Themen wie Bestechungen oder Bereicherungen im Zusammenhang mit Zivil- und Kapitalprozessen, Kommunalämtern und Ehrenstatuen sowie der Kooperation mit den Steuerpächtern gewidmet. Der Kommentar berücksichtigt die Erkenntnisse verschiedenster Forschungsdisziplinen, besonders der rechts- und althistorischen Forschung, arbeitet sie kritisch auf und macht sie für das Verständnis der Rede fruchtbar. Vor allem aber beleuchtet er diese Einzelrede erstmals vollständig aus philologischer Sicht, erörtert Sprache, Stil und Textkritik und zeigt vor allem die Raffinesse von Ciceros Redetaktik in dieser Rede und im Zusammenhang des Gesamtkorpus auf. Somit erhalten Leserinnen und Leser alle nötigen Informationen, um die unterschiedlichen Einzelaspekte der Rede zu verstehen und Ciceros oratorische Kunst zu würdigen

    The collection of the elder Seneca assembles "ations from scores of declaimers over a period spanning sixty years, from the Augustan Age through the early decades of the empire. A view is offered onto a literary scene, for this critical period of Roman letters, that is numerously populated, highly interactive, and less dominated by just a few canonical authors. Despite this potential, modern readings have often lumped declaimers together en masse and organizational principles basic to Seneca’s collection remain overlooked. This volume attempts to ‘hear’ the individual speech of declaimers by focusing on two speakers—Arellius Fuscus, rhetor to Ovid, and Papirius Fabianus, teacher of the younger Seneca. A key organizing principle, informing both the collection and the practice of declamation, was the ‘shared locus’—a short passage, defined by verbal and argumentative ingredients, that gained currency among declaimers. Study of the operation of the shared locus carries several advantages: (1) we appreciate distinctions between declaimers; (2) we recognize shared passages as a medium of communication; and (3) the shared locus emerges as a community resource, explaining deep-seated connections between declamation and literary works

    There is an unresolved tension between the parable of the Talent’s Matthean literary arrangement and readings proposed by modern scholars using socio-historical research to assess the parable’s reception by a first century audience. Drawing on metaphor theory and incorporating insights from the main interpretive trajectories found in modern scholarship on this parable, the author here proposes a new literary-critical reading that resolves this tension. He argues the parable’s rhetorical function within the Matthean narrative is to prepare the Matthean disciples to lead the universal expansion of the mission of the Matthean Jesus in the post-Easter period.

    This article queries whether Paul wrote Galatians with reference to epistolary conventions for ironic letters. First, the author explores the use of the θαυµάζω + conjunction “epistolary formula” in the non-literary papyri to determine the relationship between this expression, irony, and Gal 1:6. Then, he weighs the evidence for an ironic reading of Gal 1:6 itself before turning to the extant ancient letter writing handbooks to assess the extent to which Gal 1:6 meaningfully parallels the ironic letters in the handbooks. The author argues that while an ironic reading of Gal 1:6 is plausible, there is no evidence that Paul has crafted Galatians with reference to epistolary conventions for ironic letters.

This book analyses the use of the term “politics” in the plenary debates of the German Bundestag from 1949 to 2017. How do parliamentarians address and problematise the concept of politics? What conclusions can be drawn from this for the history of the term, rhetoric and political theory? The study is based on the digitised parliamentary debates, which offer new opportunities to analyse the use of terms from the perspective of parliamentarians as moves in debates.

    The role of narratives in legal contexts has been explored in multidisciplinary research for several decades. A common claim in this research is that the understanding of narratives is crucial to the understanding of any legal process, especially to most representations of the facts in a criminal case. It seems justified to say that law’s cultural foundations and presuppositions are always in some way or another manifested in its narratives and acts of narration. The research conducted within the field of law and narrative helps to expand our knowledge of the multiple ways in which legal thinking and decision-making rely on narrative, in both senses of the term. It also enhances our understanding of how narratives are put to use as rhetorical tools, both in the courtroom and in the court’s written judgments. The contributions to this volume present the field of law and narrative as it exists today and expand the area of inquest into fields like text linguistics, speech act theories, ordinary language theory, public international law, artificial intelligence and various media transformations of law stories.

Dabei werden neben typologischen Unterschieden auch die historischen Konjunkturen des Themas berücksichtigt. Der Gang der Argumentation berührt also die sokratische, die romantische und die moderne Ironie. Dabei geht es immer auch um deren Bedeutung für ein allgemeines Wissen. Einige Autoren, mit denen sich die Untersuchung beschäftigt, sind Sokrates/Platon und Aristophanes, Schlegel, Hegel und Kierkegaard, Swift, Voltaire, Flaubert, Proust, Thomas Mann, Joyce und Musil. The study has two objectives: to determine the general structure of irony and to show in detail how it is applied in each particular case. In addition to typological differences, the diverse historical manifestations of irony are taken into account. Among the authors the study deals with are Socrates/Plato and Aristophanes; Schlegel, Hegel, and Kierkegaard; Swift and Voltaire; Flaubert, Proust, Thomas Mann, Joyce, and Musil. While thus touching on Socratic, Romantic, and modern irony, Japp does not limit himself to the interpretation of individual ironies as they can be encountered in different times and texts, but always takes into consideration the significance of irony for a general knowledge. The book therefore concludes by inquiring about the knowledge of irony.
