    Although vastly influential in German-speaking Europe, conceptual history (Begriffsgeschichte) has until now received little attention in English. This genre of intellectual history differs from both the French history of mentalités and the Anglophone history of discourses by positing the concept - the key occupier of significant syntactical space - as the object of historical investigation. Contributions by distinguished practitioners and critics of conceptual history from Europe and America illustrate both the distinctiveness and diversity of the genre. The first part of the book is devoted to the origins and identity of the field, as well as methodological issues. Part two presents exemplary studies focusing either on a particular concept (such as Maurizio Viroli's 'Reason of the State') or a particular approach to conceptual history (e.g. Bernard Scholz for literary criticism and Terence Ball for political science). The final, most innovative section of the book looks at concepts and art - high, bourgeois and demotic. Here Bram Kempers discusses the conceptual history of Raphael's frescos in the Stanza della Segnatura of the Vatican; Eddy de Jongh examines the linguistic character of much Dutch genre painting; and Rolf Reichardt considers the conceptual structure implicit in card games of the French Revolution, used to induct those on the margins of literacy into the new revolutionary world-view.

Es geht dabei weniger um eine Neubewertung des auditiven Ausschnitts vergangener Wirklichkeiten, sondern um einen Perspektivwechsel in der Geschichtsschreibung: Im Zentrum steht die Frage, wie Menschen Klänge wahrnehmen, benutzen, inszenieren, deuten, erinnern - und zu historischen Wissenskonzepten verknüpfen. Musikgeschichte als Geschichte einer Klangkunst dient dabei als ein Kristallisationspunkt, der die interdisziplinäre Diskussion in einem besonders prägnanten Beispiel bündelt.

    The presence of the Tiǧāniyya in Ethiopia is well attested since the mission of Enrico Cerulli in early twentieth century.Since then the studies about the presence and diffusion of this order in Ethiopia have been based mainly on oral sources and fieldwork. The aim of this study is to present a very first overview of Tiǧānī literature in Ethiopia as found in the recent missions of the Islam in the Horn of Africa Project.Local literary production shows that Ethiopian masters and authors aimed to show to their disciples and readers a broader picture of the ṭarīqa, counterbalancing the local dimension of devotional piety.

    Advocating a revised history of the eighteenth-century novel, Novel Cleopatras showcases the novel’s origins in ancient mythology, its relation to epic narrative, and its connection to neoclassical print culture. Novel Cleopatras also rewrites the essential role of women writers in history who were typically underestimated as active participants of neoclassical culture, often excluded from the same schools that taught their brothers Greek and Latin. However, as author Nicole Horejsi reveals, a number of exceptional middle-class women were actually serious students of the classics. In order to dismiss the idea that women were completely marginalized as neoclassical writers, Horejsi takes up the character of Dido from ancient Greek mythology and her real-life counterpart Cleopatra, the queen of Egypt. Together, the legendary Dido and historical Cleopatra serve as figures for the conflation of myth and history. Horejsi contends that turning to the doomed queens who haunted the Roman imagination enabled eighteenth-century novelists to seize the productive overlap among the categories of history, romance, the novel, and even the epic

    Im Zentrum der vorliegenden Studie steht eine literaturwissenschaftliche Erschließung der deutschen und lateinischen Schriften des Dominikanerobservanten und Ordenschronisten Johannes Meyer (1422/23-1485). Auf der Grundlage einer überlieferungsgeschichtlich fundierten Analyse fünf verschiedener Textkomplexe, mit denen Meyers monastisches Schrifttum repräsentativ erfasst ist, wird eine Einordnung des inhaltlich und texttypologisch weit gefächerten Œuvres nicht allein unter ordens- und kulturgeschichtlicher Perspektive, sondern vor allem mit Blick auf seine Positionierung im Kontext der spätmittelalterlichen 'Frömmigkeitstheologie' sowie hinsichtlich seines originären Beitrags für die deutsche Literatur des 15. Jahrhunderts versucht. Es tritt damit ein Textcorpus neu in den Blick, das nicht zuletzt für das Verständnis des Verhältnisses von 'Reform' und 'Reformation' weiterführende Impulse und Akzente zu setzen verspricht The Dominican Johannes Meyer (1422/23–1485) left a body of texts that cover a broad range of topics and sources. The study examines the specific literary patterns and textual strategies found in his texts, and employs discourse analysis to ask how Meyer positioned himself in the context of late medieval monastic reform, the theology of piety, and the reception of mysticism, and to assess his contribution to 15th-century German literature

Scenen mit Gesang –, cette étude mesure l’envergure du caractère interdisciplinaire de l’oeuvre de Herder en révélant les liens étroits qui unissent ses réflexions en philosophie de l’histoire et sa pratique dramaturgique. Le travail philologique, ainsi que l’ampleur et la variété des sources consultées permettent de voir comment les limites entre les disciplines se déplacent et se transforment dans l’esprit de l’auteur au fur et à mesure qu’il traite de certains motifs communs à la philosophie de l’histoire et au théâtre, parmi lesquels la mythologie et le destin, ou encore les notions d’origine et de nature.Through the analysis of the complete manuscripts of four plays by Herder, written during his stays in Riga and Bückeburg –Ein Skaldengesang, SokratesBrutus and Philoktetes. Scenen mit Gesang –, this study investigates the wide scope of Herder's interdisciplinarity by revealing the close links between his reflections on the philosophy of history and his dramaturgic writing. The philological research, as well as the breadth and variety of sources consulted, reveal how the boundaries between disciplines shift and transform in the author's mind as he deals with certain themes common to the philosophy of history and theater, including mythology and destiny, or the notions of origin and nature.     Tibetan polemical literature is especially known and enjoyed for its harsh language and offensive comparisons, which stand in marked contrast to the philosophical and doctrinal matters that works of the genre commonly discuss. Drawing from a detailed literary analysis of a particular polemical exchange between Ju Mipam (1846-1912) and Pari Rapsel (1840-1912), this article calls for a distinction between what might be called “rhetorical polemics” and “formal argumentation,” and argues that the former is used to exercise framing functions towards the latter, in both structural and conceptual terms. With regard to conceptual considerations, polemical comparisons play an important role. Through frequent allusions to a stereotypical divide of Buddhist experts in practice-oriented yogis and logic-oriented scholars, these discourses connect to a larger narrative framework about the correct or incorrect transmission of Buddhism on the Tibetan plateau, which individual agents use to characterize their opponents. In so doing, they contribute to the further solidification and promotion of the master narrative that this framework entails.

    An overview of recent editions of Greek texts from Christian Antiquity is provided, with particular attention to the question of theories and methods of edition. First, we recall the main methods involved: the Lachmannian method, corrected or not by historical approaches, New Philology, etc. In a second step, we go through some large collections of editions of patristic texts, in order to identify their specificities and study their main recent productions; these are successively examined: Athanasius Werke; Gregorii Nysseni Opera; Die griechischen christlichen Schriftsteller der ersten Jahrhunderte; Patristische Texte und Studien; Corpus christianorum, series graeca; Sources chrétiennes. Some special cases are then considered: single-witness texts; treatment of overabundant traditions and phylogenetic methods; partial editions; anthologies, exegetical catenae and compilations.     This article explores the type and function of historiography in the pesharim, a group of biblical commentaries in the Dead Sea Scrolls. Although the unabashedly subjective viewpoint of history in the pesharim strongly contrasts modern notions of historiography, they nevertheless present a kind of history writing. In particular, historiography in the pesharim is analogous to traditional history, a type of history writing found in oral epics from around the world. Like traditional history, the pesharim owe their primary allegiance to a special register of language that is both traditional and adaptable. Rather than a factual record, the pesharim are formative cultural texts that use history to create and transmit cultural memory. More specifically, traditional history in the pesharim constructs a common descent of membership and "instrumentalizes" the past for identity formation in the present.

    This article is dedicated to Liesbeth van Houts, editor of the Gesta Normannorum ducum, generous mentor, colleague, and friend. This article offers an analysis, edition, and translation of the Brevis cronica compendiosa ducum Normannie, a historiographical account of the dukes of Normandy and their deeds, written at the turn of the fifteenth century by the Norman jurist and man of letters, Simon de Plumetot (1371–1443). Having all but escaped the attention of modern scholars, this study is the first to examine and publish the Brevis cronica. It not only demonstrates that the work is of greater importance than its rather scrappy form might at first suggest, but it also looks to place the text within the broader context of Simon's literary and bibliophilic practices and to determine its raison d’être. In doing so, it argues that the Brevis cronica was perhaps created as part of a much larger historiographical project, namely an extended chronicle of Normandy, written in the vernacular, the text of which is now lost. By exploring these important issues, the article sheds new light on a wide range of topics, from early humanist book collecting to the writing of history in France in the later Middle Ages.

La séparation entre histoire et roman est brouillée par une nouvelle interaction : les enquêtes historiques sont écrites comme des romans, avec des intrigues haletantes dont le héros est souvent l'auteur lui-même, et les romans sont de plus en plus inspirés par l'histoire. Il suffit de penser à des auteurs comme Laurent Binet, Emmanuel Carrère, Javier Cercas, Daniel Mendelsohn, W.G.     Modernity’s Mist explores an understudied aspect of Romanticism: its future-oriented poetics. Whereas Romanticism is well known for its relation to the past, Emily Rohrbach situates Romantic epistemological uncertainties in relation to historiographical debates that opened up a radically unpredictable and fast- approaching future. As the rise of periodization made the project of defining the "spirit of the age" increasingly urgent, the changing sense of futurity rendered the historical dimensions of the present deeply elusive. While historicist critics often are interested in what Romantic writers and their readers would have known, Rohrbach draws attention to moments when these writers felt they could not know the historical dimensions of their own age. Illuminating the poetic strategies Keats, Austen, Byron, and Hazlitt used to convey that sense of mystery, Rohrbach describes a poetic grammar of future anteriority—of uncertainty concerning what will have been. Romantic writers, she shows, do not simply reflect the history of their time; their works make imaginable a new way of thinking the historical present when faced with the temporalities of modernity

    Advocating a revised history of the eighteenth-century novel, Novel Cleopatras showcases the novel’s origins in ancient mythology, its relation to epic narrative, and its connection to neoclassical print culture. Novel Cleopatras also rewrites the essential role of women writers in history who were typically underestimated as active participants of neoclassical culture, often excluded from the same schools that taught their brothers Greek and Latin. However, as author Nicole Horejsi reveals, a number of exceptional middle-class women were actually serious students of the classics. In order to dismiss the idea that women were completely marginalized as neoclassical writers, Horejsi takes up the character of Dido from ancient Greek mythology and her real-life counterpart Cleopatra, the queen of Egypt. Together, the legendary Dido and historical Cleopatra serve as figures for the conflation of myth and history. Horejsi contends that turning to the doomed queens who haunted the Roman imagination enabled eighteenth-century novelists to seize the productive overlap among the categories of history, romance, the novel, and even the epic

    Im Zentrum der vorliegenden Studie steht eine literaturwissenschaftliche Erschließung der deutschen und lateinischen Schriften des Dominikanerobservanten und Ordenschronisten Johannes Meyer (1422/23-1485). Auf der Grundlage einer überlieferungsgeschichtlich fundierten Analyse fünf verschiedener Textkomplexe, mit denen Meyers monastisches Schrifttum repräsentativ erfasst ist, wird eine Einordnung des inhaltlich und texttypologisch weit gefächerten Œuvres nicht allein unter ordens- und kulturgeschichtlicher Perspektive, sondern vor allem mit Blick auf seine Positionierung im Kontext der spätmittelalterlichen 'Frömmigkeitstheologie' sowie hinsichtlich seines originären Beitrags für die deutsche Literatur des 15. Jahrhunderts versucht. Es tritt damit ein Textcorpus neu in den Blick, das nicht zuletzt für das Verständnis des Verhältnisses von 'Reform' und 'Reformation' weiterführende Impulse und Akzente zu setzen verspricht The Dominican Johannes Meyer (1422/23–1485) left a body of texts that cover a broad range of topics and sources.     Modernity’s Mist explores an understudied aspect of Romanticism: its future-oriented poetics. Whereas Romanticism is well known for its relation to the past, Emily Rohrbach situates Romantic epistemological uncertainties in relation to historiographical debates that opened up a radically unpredictable and fast- approaching future. As the rise of periodization made the project of defining the "spirit of the age" increasingly urgent, the changing sense of futurity rendered the historical dimensions of the present deeply elusive. While historicist critics often are interested in what Romantic writers and their readers would have known, Rohrbach draws attention to moments when these writers felt they could not know the historical dimensions of their own age. Illuminating the poetic strategies Keats, Austen, Byron, and Hazlitt used to convey that sense of mystery, Rohrbach describes a poetic grammar of future anteriority—of uncertainty concerning what will have been. Romantic writers, she shows, do not simply reflect the history of their time; their works make imaginable a new way of thinking the historical present when faced with the temporalities of modernity
